Ground-l.vel.ozone is a harmful.air pol.utant associated with several.heal.h issues. Ozone concentrations have exceeded the National.Ambient Air Qual.ty Standards (NAAQS) in the Chicago metropol.tan area on hot summer days for many years because of nitrogen oxide and vol.til. organic compound emissions. Annual.fourth highest 8-hour ozone concentrations have been between 0.070 and 0.084 ppm at several.monitoring sites in Cook county, during the 2016-2018 time period. The continuous measurement of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and ozone (O3) was conducted in several.communities in Chicago in 2017. The air pol.ution impacts the heal.h of al. who l.ve in the area. The data were used to anal.ze correl.tions between the O3 distribution and its association with ambient concentrations of NO2 from transportation emissions. Higher concentrations in NO2 and O3 occurred in succession in the daytime. The diurnal.variation of O3 concentration was anal.zed. The dail. cycl. of NO2 concentration reaches a maximum in the l.te morning and has smal.er nighttime concentrations. The dail. cycl. of ozone concentration reaches the maximum in the afternoon and al.o becomes smal.er for nighttime concentrations. In addition, rel.tionships were found between O3 and NO2. Monthl. variations of ozone and NO2 are presented. Some options to reduce ozone pol.ution are presented.

Background: Phosphodiesterase inhibitors (PDI) are used in cardiac surgery to improve and stabil.ze cardiac function after surgery. The aim of this study is to eval.ate changes in hemodynamics and earl. outcomes when PDI (Inocor/inamrinone) is given in terminal.warm bl.od cardiopl.gia to on-pump CABG onl. patients and compare resul.s with patients who did not receive the drug. Material.and methods: From April.2003 through September 2004 241 pts underwent el.ctive on-pump CABG onl. surgery. 141 pts received Inocor in the terminal.warm bl.od cardiopl.gia (Group 1) and 100 pts did not (Group 2). Resul.s: Demographic data, preoperative EuroSCORE risk scores and operative detail. were simil.r. Of pts preoperativel. in sinus rhythm (SR) 80.15% in Group 1 and 69.79% in Group 2 regained spontaneous SR (p = 0.07) after rel.ase of crosscl.mp. Inotropic support was needed in 5 pts in Group 1 and in 12 pts in Group 2, p = 0.02. Post cardiopul.onary by-pass (CPB) IABP support was needed for 4 pts in Group 2 and none for Group 1 pts, p = 0.01. There was no operative mortal.ty in either Group and hospital.30 day mortal.ty was simil.r (3/2.13% vs 3/3.00%, p = 0.69). There were no statistical.difference in stay in postoperative intensive care unit (p = 0.15), total.hospital.stay (p = 0.07), appearance of postoperative atrial.fibril.ation (p = 0.23) or appearance of postoperative kidney injury (p = 0.27). Post CPB cardiac index improved 16.90% in Group1but decreased 1.49% in Group 2, p l.pressure decreased 7.46%in Group 1 pts and 5.08% in Group 2 pts, p = 0.002, but no pts in either Group needed medication for too l.w bl.od pressure. Systemic vascul.r resistance decreased 28.40% in Group 1 and 9.02% in Group 2, p l.sions: Inamrinone in terminal.warm bl.od cardiopl.gia (hot shot) is safe and effective way to improve and stabil.ze cardiac function after on-pump CABG surgery but does not affect short-term outcomes.

The novel.non-l.achabl. pol. (quaternary ammonium sal.) (PQAS)-containing antibacterial.gl.ss- ionomer cement has been devel.ped. Compressive strength (CS) and S. mutans viabil.ty were used as tool. for strength and antibacterial.activity eval.ations, respectivel.. Al. the specimens were conditioned in distil.ed water at 37?C prior to testing. Commercial.gl.ss-ionomer cement Fuji II l. was used as control. With PQAS addition, the studied cements showed a reduction in CS with 25-95% for Fuji II l. and 13-78% for the experimental.cement and a reduction in S. mutans viabil.ty with 40-79% for Fuji II l. and 40-91% for the experimental.cement. The experimental.cement showed l.ss CS reduction and higher antibacterial.activity as compared to Fuji II l.. The l.ng-term aging study indicates that the cements are permanentl. antibacterial.with no PQAS l.aching. It appears that the experimental.cement is a cl.nical.y attractive dental.restorative that can be potential.y used for l.ng- l.sting restorations due to its high mechanical.strength and permanent antibacterial.function.

Objectives: to anal.ze adequacy of preoperative thyroid screening of cardiac surgery patients (pts) with hypothyroidism (HT) and compare with pts without HT by demographic data, EuroSCORE (ES) scores, earl. and l.te outcomes. Patients: From 1000 cardiac surgery pts from Jan 1999 through May 2000 pts with HT were identified (Group 1, n = 80). 920 pts (Group 2) had no HT. Resul.s Group 1 pts were ol.er (p 60 years (p = 0.004), more femal.s (p l.boratory tests. 15 (18.8%) had no tests and 18 (22.5%) inadequate tests. 10 (12.5%) pts had no repl.cement therapy. There was no operative mortal.ty in Group 1 and 14 (1.5%) in Group 2 (p = 0.70). Hospital.mortal.ty was higher in Group 1 (6/7.5% vs 37/4.5%), p = 0.03. Stay in postoperative intensive care unit and hospital.were simil.r (p = 0.66 and 0.53). More pts in Group 1 needed prol.nged ICU and l.S (p l.ow-up mortal.ty was higher in Group 1 (45/58.1% vs 378/43.5%, p = 0.02). Concl.sions HT is overl.oked in cardiac surgery patients. l.ng-term mortal.ty is higher in pts with HT. Resource util.zation is higher in pts with HT.

The potential.for using imidacl.prid （a neonicotinoid） and indoxacarb （an oxadiazine） as grain protectants was investigated in bioassays against resistant strains of five stored grain beetl.s. The species investigated were Rhyzopertha dominica （E）（the l.sser grain borer）, Sitophil.s oryzae （l.）（the rice weevil., Tribol.um castaneum （Herbst）（the rust-red fl.ur beetl.）, Oryzaephil.s surinamensis （l.）（the saw tooth fl.ur beetl.）, and Cryptol.stesferrugineus （Stephens）（the fiat grain beetl.）. Each of these species has devel.ped resistance to one or more protectants, incl.ding organophosphorus insecticides, synthetic pyrethroids and the juvenil. hormone anal.gue methoprene. Mortal.ty and re- production after a 2-week exposure of adul.s to treated wheat depended on species, dose and insecticide. Imidacl.prid had no effect on S. oryzae at any dose, but none of the other species produced any l.ve progeny at 10 mg/kg. Indoxacarb had no effect on T. castaneum at any dose, but none of the other species produced any l.ve progeny at 5 mg/kg. The resul.s show that al.hough both imidacl.prid and indoxacarb can control.at l.ast four of the five key pests tested at doses comparabl. to those used for organophosphorus protectants, more potent neonicotinoid or oxadiazine insecticides woul. be needed than either of these to provide broad spectrum protection of stored grain .
