Determining the migration routes and connections of migratory birds at the population level helps clarify intraspecific differences in *** subspecies have been recognized in the Whimbrel(Numenius phaeopus)in *** is the most recently described *** breeds in Central Siberia,while its non-breeding region and migration routes are still *** tracked the migration of Eurasian Whimbrels captured at three non-breeding sites(Moreton Bay in east coast of Australia,Roebuck Bay in Northwest Australia and Sungei Buloh Wetland in Singapore)and two migration stopover sites(Chongming Dongtan and Mai Po Wetland in China).We determined the breeding sites and inferred the subspecies of the tagged birds in the East Asian–Australasian Flyway(EAAF)based on the known breeding distribution of each *** the 30 tagged birds,6 and 21 birds bred in the breeding range of *** and variegatus,respectively;one bred in the presumed transition area between the breeding range of *** and rogachevae,and two bred in the region between the breeding range of *** and *** birds that bred in the *** breeding range spent their non-breeding season in the northern Sumatra,Singapore,East Java and Northwest Australia and mainly stopped over along China's coasts during *** of our birds bred in the exclusive breeding range of the phaeopus *** studies have predicted that rogachevae whimbrels migrate along the Central Asian Flyway and spend the non-breeding season in West India and East *** found that at least some rogachevae whimbrels migrate along the EAAF and spend the non-breeding season in Southeast Asia and *** *** is at best sparsely distributed in the EAAF in the west region,or possibly does not occur at all.

Polyphenols isolated from Acacia mearnsii bark with anti-inflammatory and carbolytic enzyme inhibitory activities

The present study was designed to characterize the polyphenols isolated from Acacia mearnsii bark crude extract(B) and fractions(B1-B7) obtained by high-speed counter-current chromatography(HSCCC) and evaluate their anti-inflammatory and carbolytic enzymes(α-glucosidase and α-amylase) inhibitory activities. Fractions B4, B5, B6, B7(total phenolics 850.3, 983.0, 843.9, and 572.5 mg·g^(-1)), respectively; proanthocyanidins 75.7, 90.5, 95.0, and 44.8 mg·g^(-1)), respectively) showed significant activities against reactive oxygen species(ROS), nitric oxide(NO) production, and expression of pro-inflammatory genes interleukin-1β(IL-1β) and inducible nitric oxide synthase(iNOS) in a lipopolysaccharide(LPS)-stimulated mouse macrophage cell line RAW 264.7. All the extracts suppressed α-glucosidase and α-amylase activities, two primary enzymes responsible for carbohydrate digestion. A. mearnsii bark samples possessed significantly stronger inhibitory effects against α-glucosidase enzyme(IC_(50) of 0.4-1.4 μg·mL^(-1)) than the pharmaceutical acarbose(IC_(50) 141.8 μg·mL^(-1))). B6 and B7(IC_(50) 17.6 and 11.7 μg·mL^(-1), respectively) exhibited α-amylase inhibitory activity as efficacious as acarbose(IC_(50) 15.4 μg·mL^(-1))). Moreover, B extract, at 25 μg·mL^(-1), significantly decreased the non-mitochondrial oxidative burst that is often associated with inflammatory response in human monocytic macrophages.

Characterization of cobalt ferrite-supported activated carbon for removal of chromium and lead ions from tannery wastewater via adsorption equilibrium

In this experiment,cobalt ferrite-supported activated carbon(CF-AC)was developed and characterized via the wet impregnation method for the removal of Cr and Pb(II)ions from tannery *** adsorption was carried out to evaluate the effect of experimental operating conditions(pH of solution,contact time,adsorbent dose,and temperature),and the removal efficiencies of Cr and Pb(II)ions by the developed adsorbents were calculated and recorded for all experimental *** variables were estimated and reported as removal efficiencies of 98.2%for Cr and 96.4%for Pb(II)ions at the optimal conditions of 5,0.8 g,80 min,and 333 k for pH,adsorbent dose,contact time,and temperature,*** equilibrium for the sorption of Cr and Pb(II)ions was studied using four widely used isotherm models(the Langmuir,Freundlich,Dubinin-Radushkevich,and Temkin isotherm models).It was found that the Freundlich isotherm model fit better with the coefficient of determination(R2)of 0.9484 and a small sum of square error of *** maximum adsorption capacities(Qm)of Pb(II)and Cr adsorbed onto CF-AC were determined to be 6.27 and 23.6 mg/g,*** adsorption process conformed well to pseudo-second order kinetics as revealed by the high R2 values obtained for both *** thermodynamic parameters showed that adsorption of Cr and Pb(II)ions onto CF-AC was spontaneous,feasible,and endothermic under the studied *** mean adsorption energy(E)values revealed that the adsorption mechanism of Cr and Pb(II)by CF-AC is physical in *** results of the study showed that adsorbent developed from CF-AC can be efficiently used as an environmentally friendly alternative adsorbent,for removal of Cr and Pb(II)ions in tannery wastewater.

Impact of antiviral therapy on post-hepatectomy outcome for hepatitis B-related hepatocellular carcinoma

The outcome after curative resection for hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)remains unsatisfactory due to the high recurrence rate after *** patients with hepatitis B virus(HBV)-related HCC,which is the majority of patients with HCC in Asia,a high viral load is a strong risk factor for HCC *** is logical to believe that antiviral therapy may improve the postoperative outcome by promoting viral clearance and hepatocyte regeneration,as well as improving residual liver volume in HCC patients with hepatitis ***,the effect of antiviral therapy on clinical outcomes after liver resection in patients with HBV-related HCC remains to be *** are two main groups of antiviral treatment for HBV-oral nucleos(t)ide analogues and *** treatment reduces the overall incidence of HBV-related HCC in sustained ***,side effects may limit its long-term clinical ***(t)ide analogues carry fewer side effects and are potent in terms of viral suppression when compared to interferon and are typically implemented for patients with more advanced liver *** may also improve the outcome after curative resection for HBV-related *** are increasing evidence to suggest that antiviral therapy could suppress HBV,decrease the perioperative reactivation of viral replication,reduce liver injury,preserve the liver function before and after operation,and may lower the risk of HCC *** all,antiviral therapy may improve the survival after liver resection by reducing recurrence and delaying the liver damage by the virus,resulting in a higher chance of receiving aggressive salvage therapy during HCC recurrence.

Natural Colonization of Rice by Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi in Different Production Areas

Interactions between plants and soil microorganisms can influence the other interactions in which plants participate, including interactions with herbivores. Many fungi, including arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi(AMF), form symbiotic relationships with the roots they inhabit, and potentially alter defense against pests. The objective of this study was to document the extent of root colonization by AMF on non-flooded rice plants grown under conditions typical of commercial fields. We hypothesized that AMF naturally colonized rice plants in different rice producing field locations. Rice plant samples were collected from areas across the southern United States, including Texas, Mississippi, Arkansas and two research stations in Louisiana. We quantified the amount of AMF colonization in insecticide-free rice plants over three consecutive years(2014–2016). The results revealed natural colonization of AMF in all rice producing areas. In all the three years of survey, rice-AMF associations were the greatest in Arkansas followed by Mississippi and Texas. This research will help draw attention to natural colonization of AMF in rice producing areas that can impact future rice research and production by facilitating agricultural exploitation of the symbiosis.

ECOLOGICAL CONSEQUENCES OFSOIL EROSION AND SEDIMENTATION

Sediment erosion and siltation in waterways can have ecological consequences as disastrous economically as those related to transport and flooding of adjacent lands. The impact of sediment erosion and deposition on human societies is recorded in many historical documents. The paleoecological record also provides evidence of the long-term effects of siltation. Sedimentation rates in the Chesapeake Bay estuary, in mid-Atlantic USA, have doubled and quadrupled over the last 200 to 300 years with the initiation and intensification of agriculture. The result has been filling in of many estuarine tributaries and the transformation of the estuary from a benthic to a planktonic ecosystem. This change took place as light became limiting in the water column and benthic plants could no longer photosynthesize, resulting in a proliferation of planktonic algae. Planktonic algal growth was also fueled by fertilizers attached to eroded soil particles. leading ultimately to eutrophication within the water column and anoxia of the bottom waters.

Background:The purpose of this study was to report on the psychometric measures and discriminatory function of a new diagnostic test for autism spectrum disorders,the Clinical Autism Diagnostic Scale(CADS).Methods:The CADS was used to test 216 children in the study,including 86 with low-functioning autism specturm disorders(ASD),16 children with highfunctioning ASD,16 with pervasive developmental disorder,not otherwise specified,7 with Asperger syndrome,65 with typical development,11 children with language impairments and 15 with intellectual *** ranged from 38-73 *** for the groups were compared across seven ***:The results indicated the instrument was reliable,valid,and successfully differentiated the different groups of children with and without *** ASD groups were found to display difficulties in the domains of sensory behaviors and stereotyped *** play and social domains were found to measure similar underlying concepts of behaviors,while the receptive language and expressive language domains were also found to measure similar underlying-language *** group of children diagnosed as having low-functioning autism performed less well on all tested domains in the instrument than did the other three groups of children with ASD,and these other three groups each also presented unique patterns of behaviors and differed on individual ***:CADS is a reliable and valid *** successfully differentiates the abilities of children with ASD at different levels of functioning.

Analysis of Pioneering Computable Biomedical knowledge Repositories and their Emerging Governance Structures

A growing interest in producing and sharing computable biomedical knowledge artifacts(CBks) is increasing the demand for repositories that validate, catalog, and provide shared access to CBks. However, there is a lack of evidence on how best to manage and sustain CBk repositories. In this paper, we present the results of interviews with several pioneering CBk repository owners. These interviews were informed by the Trusted Repositories Audit and Certification(TRAC) framework. Insights gained from these interviews suggest that the organizations operating CBk repositories are somewhat new, that their initial approaches to repository governance are informal, and that achieving economic sustainability for their CBk repositories is a major challenge. To enable a learning health system to make better use of its data intelligence, future approaches to CBk repository management will require enhanced governance and closer adherence to best practice frameworks to meet the needs of myriad biomedical science and health communities. More effort is needed to find sustainable funding models for accessible CBk artifact collections.
