The mesoproterozoic(1.11 Ga)Umkondo large igneous province(LIP)in southern Africa and Antarctica was emplaced inmyr and is dominated by low-Ti tholeiitic doleritic-gabbroic *** is of particular interest because it is the least studied LIP in southern Africa with both sublithospheric and lithospheric mantle sources proposed and it coincides with the early assembly of Rodinia,so it has importance in understanding the nature of magmatism and tectonics in and around the Kalahari craton during the *** this study,we compiled a large database of existing(~750)and new(~100)major and trace element data for the Umkondo province,as well as 42 new Sr-Nd isotopic measurements,to provide constraints on its magma sources and geochemical *** element compositional variations in the low-Ti tholeiites are explained by low-pressure(1 kbar)three-phase fractional crystallisation(olivine,clinopyroxene and plagioclase)of a parent magma with~10 wt.%mgO in oxidising conditions(QFm+1).Inverse models show that the low-Ti tholeiitic magmas were derived as residual melts after the crystallization of 12%-33%olivine from primary komatiitic-basaltic magmas(up to~20 wt.%mgO)in equilibrium with mantle olivine(Fo90).Low Sm/Yb and TiO2/Yb-Nb/Yb indicate that the primary magmas were derived by 2%-20%shallow(40-50 km)partial melting of spinel *** Sm/Yb is restricted to dyke swarms and may imply limited magma production from deeper(up to~70 km)garnet lherzolite-like *** low-Ti tholeiites of the Umkondo province are enriched in large ion lithophile elements(Rb-Sr-Cs-K)and depleted in high-field strength elements(Zr-Hf-Nb-Ta),indicating the involvement of crustal material and/or the subcontinental lithospheric *** is supported by covariations in Th/Nb,Nb/Yb,Nb/La and Ce/Sm with generally negativeΔ***-Nd isotopes lend support to the notion that the Umkondo magmas were derived from depleted and/or enriched sublithospheric mantle sources and subs

Characterising the mechanisms of cell death following focal cerebral ischaemia has been hampered by a lack of an in vitro assay emulating both the apoptotic and necrotic features observed in vivo. The present study systematically characterised oxygen-glucose-deprivation (OGD) in primary rat cortical neurones to establish a reproducible model with components of both cell-death endpoints. OGD induced a time-dependent reduction in cell viability, with 80% cell death occurring 24 h after 3 h exposure to 0% O2 and 0.5 mm glucose. Indicative of a necrotic component to OGD induced cell death, N-methyl-D-aspartate (NmDA) receptor inhibition with mK-801 attenuated neuronal loss by 60%. The lack of protection by the caspase inhibitors DEVD-CHO and z-VAD-fmk suggested that under these conditions neurones did not die by an apoptotic mechanism. moderating the severity of the insult by decreasing OGD exposure to 60 min did not reduce the amount of necrosis, but did induce a small degree of apoptosis (a slight reductio

AIm:To assess the relationship between preoperative computed tomography(CT)and postoperative pathological measurements of esophageal tumor length and the prognostic significance of CT tumor length ***:A retrospective study was carried out in 56 patients who underwent curative *** lengths were measured on the immediate preoperative CT and on the post-operative resection ***-and intra-observer variations in CT measurements were *** data were ***:There was a weak correlation between CT and pathological tumor length(r=0.30,P=0.025).CT lengths were longer than pathological lengths in 68%(38/56)of patients with a mean difference of 1.67 cm(95%CI:1.18-2.97).The mean difference in measurements by two radiologists was 0.39 cm(95% CI:-0.59-1.44).The mean difference between repeat CT measured tumor length(intra-observer variation) were 0.04 cm(95%CI:-0.59-0.66)and 0.47 cm (95%CI:-0.53-1.47).When stratified,patients not receiving neoadjuvant chemotherapy showed a strong correlation between CT and pathological tumor length(r =0.69,P=0.0014,n=37)than patients that did(r= 0.13,P=0.43,n=19).median survival with CT tumor length>5.6 cm was poorer than with smaller tumors,but the difference was not statistically ***:Esophageal tumor length assessed using CT does not reflect pathological tumor extent and should not be the only modality used for management decisions,particularly for planning radiotherapy.
