The Influence of Biochar on Growth of Lettuce and Potato

Pot experiments were conducted in a glasshouse to determine the growth pattern of lettuce, true potato seedlings （TPs） and single node cuttings of TPs in response to biochar. The treatments were arranged in a randomized complete block design with 5 treatments （0, 10, 30, 50 and 100 t ha^-1） ofbiochar from greenwaste with 5 replications in lettuce, 10 in TPs and 5 in single node cuttings of TPs. The observations recorded on growth parameters showed that biochar had significant effect on growth of lettuce but no consistent effect on growth of TPs and single node cuttings. Among the biochar rates, 30 t ha^-1 had the greatest influence on overall growth of lettuce. The pH and electrical conductivity increased as the biochar rates increased in all experiments. These results provide an avenue for soil management system by using biochar as an amendment in horticultural crops. However, their verification in the field is important for specific recommendations.

Use of stainless reinforcing steel （sRs） in reinforced concrete （RC） structures is a promising solution to corrosion issues. However, for sRs to be used in seismic applications, several mechanical properties need to be investigated. These include specified and actual yield strengths, tensile strengths, uniform elongations and low-cycle fatigue behavior. Three types of sRss （Talley s24100, Talley 316LN and Talley 2205） were tested and the results are reported in this paper. They were compared with the properties of A706 carbon reinforcing steel （Rs）, which is typical for seismic applications, and MMFX II, which is a high strength, corrosion resistant Rs. Low-cycle fatigue tests of the Rs coupons were conducted under strain control with constant amplitude to obtain strain life models of the steels. Test results show that the sRss have slightly lower moduli of elasticity, higher uniform elongations before necking, and better low-cycle fatigue performance than A706 and MMFX II. All five types of Rss tested satisfy the requirements of the ACI 318 code on the lower limit of the tensile to yield strength ratio. Except Talley 2205, the other four types of Rss investigated meet the ACI 318 requirement that the actual yield strength does not exceed the specified yield strength by more than 18 ksi （124 MPa）. Among the three types of sRss tested, Talley s24100 possesses the highest uniform elongation before necking, and the best low-cycle fatigue performance.

Molten salts play multiple important roles in the electrolysis of solid metal compounds,particularly oxides and sulfides,for the extraction of metals or *** of these roles are positive in assisting the extraction of metals,such as dissolving the oxide or sulfide anions,and transporting them to the anode for discharging,and offering the high temperature to lower the kinetic barrier to break the metal-oxygen or metal-sulfur ***,molten salts also have unfavorable effects,including electronic conductivity and significant capability of dissolving oxygen and carbon dioxide *** addition,although molten salts are relatively simple in terms of composition,physical properties,and decomposition reactions at inert electrodes,in comparison with aqueous electrolytes,the high temperatures of molten salts may promote unwanted electrode-electrolyte *** article reviews briefly and selectively the research and development of the F ray-F arthing-Chen(FFC)Cambridge Process in the past two decades,focusing on observations,understanding,and solutions of various interactions between molten salts and cathodes at different reduction states,including perovskitization,non-wetting of molten salts on pure metals,carbon contamination of products,formation of oxychlorides and calcium intermetallic compounds,and oxygen transfer from the air to the cathode product mediated by oxide anions in the molten salt.

AIM:To study factors associated with loss of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) in patients co-infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis B virus (HBV).METHODs:We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 5681 patients followed up at two New York City HIV clinics from January 1999 to May *** and laboratory parameters including baseline and follow-up HIV viral loads,CD4 cell counts,alanine transaminase levels,demographics,presence of hepatitis C infection,and treatment with highly active antiretroviral therapy dually active against both HIV and HBV infection,were analyzed to determine factors associated with loss of ***:Three hundred and fifty five patients (355/5681,6.84%) were co-infected with HIV and HBV and were *** these,226 patients with more than 12 mo follow-up were included in further analysis to determine factors associated with loss of HBsAg in the long-term *** the univariate analysis,baseline CD4 cell count was associated with loss of HBsAg (P=0.052).Cox regression analysis revealed that loss of HBsAg was associated with baseline CD4 cell count > 500 cells/mm3 (P=0.016,odds ratio:76.174,95% confidence interval:2.233-2598.481).CONCLUsION:Our study showed an interesting association of loss of HBsAg in HIV-HBV co-infected patients with higher CD4 cell count,suggesting that T-cell cytolytic activity against HBV may still be effective in clearing HBV infection.

Despite the effectiveness of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography（ERCP） for the treatment of choledocholithiasis, various complications have been described. We herein report the first case of prolonged postERCP jaundice due to toxicity of the contrast agent Iobitridol（~174;XENETIX, Guerbet, Roissy Cd G Cedex, France） in a patient who underwent ERCP with sphincterectomy and common bile duct stone removal. While clinical improvement and normalization of aminotransferases and cholestatic enzymes after the procedure, an unexplained increase of direct bilirubin was noticed. A second ERCP was performed one week later, excluding possible remaining choledocholithiasis. Nevertheless, serum direct bilirubin increased further up to 15 mg/d L. Other potential causes of direct hyperbilirubinemia were ruled out and patient＇s liver biopsy was compatible with drug-induced liver toxicity. Additionally, the cause-result time connection between the use of Iobitridol and bilirubin increase indicated the possibility of a toxic effect related to the repeated use of the particular contrast agent. Iobitridol, a contrast agent, can induce prolonged direct hyperbilirubinemia.

We report on the use of a fiber-based Mueller-matrix optical coherence tomography(OCT)system with continuous source-polarization modulation for in vivo imaging of early stages of skin cancer in sENCAR mice.A homemade hand-held probe with integrated optical scanning and beam delivering optics was coupled in the sample *** OCT images show the morphological changes in skin resulting from pre-cancerous papilloma formations that are consistent with histology,thus demonstrating the system’s potential for early skin cancer detection.

Recently,single nucleotide polymorphisms,in the vicinity of the interferon lambda 3(IFNL3)gene have been identified as the strongest predictor of spontaneous and treatment induced clearance of hepatitis C virus(HCV)*** then,increasing evidence has implicated the innate immune response in mediating the IFNL3 genotype *** cells(DCs)are key to the host immune response in HCV infection and their vital role in the IFNL3 genotype effect is *** have identified subclasses of DCs,particularly myeloid DC2s and potentially plasmacytoid DCs as the major producers of IFNL3 in the setting of HCV *** the complexities of dendritic cell biology and the conflicting current available data,this review aims to summarize what is currently known regarding the role of dendritic cells in HCV infection and to placeit into context of what is know about lambda interferons and dendritic cells in general.

The peripheral nervous system has an extensive branching organization, and peripheral nerve injuries that ablate branch points present a complex challenge for clinical repair. Ablations of linear segments of the PNs have been extensively studied and routinely treated with autografts, acellular nerve allografts, conduits, wraps, and nerve transfers. In contrast, segmental-loss peripheral nerve injuries, in which one or more branch points are ablated so that there are three or more nerve endings, present additional complications that have not been rigorously studied or documented. This review discusses:(1) the branched anatomy of the peripheral nervous system,(2) case reports describing how peripheral nerve injuries with branched ablations have been surgically managed,(3) factors known to influence regeneration through branched nerve structures,(4) techniques and models of branched peripheral nerve injuries in animal models, and(5) conclusions regarding outcome measures and studies needed to improve understanding of regeneration through ablated branched structures of the peripheral nervous system.
