Respiration protocols have been developed to manipulate mental states,including their use for therapeutic *** this systematic review,we discuss evidence that respiration may play a fundamental role in coordinating neural activity,behavior,and *** main findings are:(1)respiration affects the neural activity of a wide variety of regions in the brain;(2)respiration modulates different frequency ranges in the brain’s dynamics;(3)different respiration protocols(spontaneous,hyperventilation,slow or resonance respiration)yield different neural and mental effects;and(4)the effects of respiration on the brain are related to concurrent modulation of biochemical(oxygen delivery,pH)and physiological(cerebral blood flow,heart rate variability)*** conclude that respiration may be an integral rhythm of the brain’s neural *** provides an intimate connection of respiration with neuro-mental features like emotion.A respiratory-neuro-mental connection holds the promise for a brain-based therapeutic usage of respiration in mental disorders.

The atomic force microscope has become an established research tool for imaging microorganisms with unprecedented ***,its use in microbiology has been limited by the difficulty of proper bacterial ***,we have developed a microfluidic device that solves the issue of bacterial immobilization for atomic force microscopy under physiological *** device is able to rapidly immobilize bacteria in well-defined positions and subsequently release the cells for quick sample *** developed device also allows simultaneous fluorescence analysis to assess the bacterial viability during atomic force microscope *** demonstrated the potential of our approach for the immobilization of rod-shaped Escherichia coli and Bacillus *** our device,we observed buffer-dependent morphological changes of the bacterial envelope mediated by the antimicrobial peptide *** approach to bacterial immobilization makes sample preparation much simpler and more reliable,thereby accelerating atomic force microscopy studies at the single-cell level.

Effects of newly devised plasma lice comb on human hair

A plasma device was developed showing high potential for a pesticide-free treatment of pediculosis. As a first safety assessment of the device was presented earlier, this present paper focuses on the damage introduced to human hair during a plasma treatment for pediculosis control. Therefore, human hairs were treated repeatedly to assess the possible occurring damage developing with increasing treatment durations. To analyse the inflicted changes on human hair examinations using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS/ESCA), scanning nearfield optical microscopy(SNOM) and scanning electron microscopy were conducted, to compare the modifications of surface chemistry and mechanical alterations. The investigations revealed a mild impact on the surface chemistry(XPS/SNOM), while more distinct morphological changes on the hair surface could be observed. The authors conclude that an effect of the plasma comb device on the hair during a real-life treatment is negligible, due to the very short contact times during a standard combing procedure for pediculosis control.

An Algorithm to Detect Tropical Deep Convective Clouds Through AMSU-B Water Vapor Channels

An algorithm to detect tropical deep convective clouds and deep convective overshootings based on the measurements from the three water vapor channels （1833GHz± 1GHz, 183.3GHz±3GHz and 183.3GHz±7GHz） of the Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit-B （AMSU-B） is presented. This algorithm is an improved version of the method of Hong et al. （2005）. The proposed procedure is based on the statistical analysis of seven years＇（2001-2007） measurements from AMSU-B on NOAA-16. From the 1-d histograms of the brightness temperature of the three water vapor channels and the 2-d histograms of the brightness temperature dif- ference between these channels, new thresholds for brightness temperature differences and the *** temperature of chamM 18 （183.3 GHz 4-1 GHz） are suggested. The new algorithm is employed to investigate the mean distribution of tropical deep convective clouds and convective overshootings from 30＇S to 30＇N for the years 2001 to 2007. The major concentration of deep convective clouds and convective overshootings is found over the Intertropical Convergence Zone （ITCZ）, the South Pacific Convergence Zone （SPCZ）, tropical Africa, South America, the Indian Ocean and Indonesia ruth an average fraction of 0.4%. In terms of these clouds we identity, the secondary Intertropical Convergence Zone located in the eastern South Pacific and parallel to the main ITCZ in the North Pacific. The convective overshooting is more frequently observed over land than over the ocean.

Comparison of CloudSat Cloud Liquid Water Paths in Arctic Summer Using Ground-Based Microwave Radiometer

Arctic clouds strongly influence the regional radiation balance, temperature, melting of sea ice, and freezing of sea water. Despite their importance, there is a lack of systematic and reliabie observations of Arctic clouds. The CloudSat satellite launched in 2006 with a 94GHz Cloud Profiling Radar （CPR） may contribute to close this gap. Here we compare one of the key parameters, the cloud liquid water path （LWP） retrieved from CloudSat observations and from microwave radiometer （MWR） data taken during the ASCOS （Arctic Summer Cloud Ocean Study） cruise of the research vessel Oden from August to September 2008. Over the 45 days of the ASCOS cruise, collocations closer than 3 h and 100 km were found in only 9 d, and collocations closer than 1 h and 30 km in only 2 d. The poor correlations in the scatter plots of the two LWP retrievals can be explained by the patchiness of the cloud cover in these two days （August 5th and September 7th）, as confirmed by coincident MODIS （Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiome- ter） images. The averages of Oden-observed LWP values are systematically higher （40-70 g m-2） than the corresponding CloudSat observations （0-50 g m2）. These are cases of generally low LWP with presumably small droplets, and may be explained by the little sensitivity of the CPR to small droplets or by the surface clutter.
