From single to combinatorial therapies in spinal cord injuries for structural and functional restoration

Spinal cord injury results in paralysis, sensory disturbances, sphincter dysfunction, and multiple systemic secondary conditions, most arising from autonomic dysregulation. All this produces profound negative psychosocial implications for affected people, their families, and their communities;the financial costs can be challenging for their families and health institutions. Treatments aimed at restoring the spinal cord after spinal cord injury, which have been tested in animal models or clinical trials, generally seek to counteract one or more of the secondary mechanisms of injury to limit the extent of the initial damage. most published works on structural/functional restoration in acute and chronic spinal cord injury stages use a single type of treatment: a drug or trophic factor, transplant of a cell type, and implantation of a biomaterial. Despite the significant benefits reported in animal models, when translating these successful therapeutic strategies to humans, the result in clinical trials has been considered of little relevance because the improvement, when present, is usually insufficient. Until now, most studies designed to promote neuroprotection or regeneration at different stages after spinal cord injury have used single treatments. Considering the occurrence of various secondary mechanisms of injury in the acute and sub-acute phases of spinal cord injury, it is reasonable to speculate that more than one therapeutic agent could be required to promote structural and functional restoration of the damaged spinal cord. Treatments that combine several therapeutic agents, targeting different mechanisms of injury, which, when used as a single therapy, have shown some benefits, allow us to assume that they will have synergistic beneficial effects. massive fibrous epulis——a case report of a 10-year-old lesion

The fibrous epulis, a common tumor-like lesion of the gingiva, appears in the interdental papilla as a result of local irritation. Lesions are asymptomatic and have a variable growth rate. A 75-year-old woman was referred for the evaluation of a large painless gingival mass. It had started 10 years back and has been increasing in size the last year. No bone involvement was noted. The tumor was totally removed by excision with surgical scalpel under local anesthesia without teeth extraction. The microscopic findings were suggestive of a fibrous epulis. Differential diagnosis, clinical considerations and factors to prevent recurrence are discussed.

modeling particle sedimentation in viscous fluids with a coupled immersed boundary method and discrete element method

Numerical techniques have increasingly been used to model fluid–particle two-phase flows. Coupling the immersed boundary method （IBm） and discrete element method （DEm） is one promising approach for modeling particulate flows. In this study, IBm was coupled with DEm to improve the reliability and accuracy of IBm for determining the positions of particles during the sedimentation process within viscous fluids. The required ratio of the particle diameter to the grid size （D/dx） was determined by comparing the simulation results with the analytical solution and experimental data. A dynamic mesh refinement model was utilised in the IBm model to refine the computational fluid dynamics grid near the particles. In addition, an optimum coupling interval between the IBm and DEm models was determined based on the experimental results of a single particle sedimentation within silicon oil at a Reynolds number of 1.5. The experimental results and the analytical solution were then utilised to validate the IBm–DEm model at Reynolds numbers of 4.1, 11.6, and 31.9. Finally, the validated model was utilised to investigate the sedimentation process for more than one particle by modeling the drafting-kissing-tumbling process and the Boycott phenomenon. Benchmark tests showed that the IBm–DEm technique preserves the advantages of DEm for tracking a group of particles, while the IBm provides a reliable and accurate approach for modeling the particle–fluid interaction.

A case study on the efficacy of different roof bolting schemes in Lhoist North America’s Crab Orchard mine

Roof bolting has long been used in underground mines across the world to provide ground *** roof bolts are cheap and easy to install with the use of specialized machines as a part of the production cycle. Lhoist North America’s Crab Orchard mine is an underground room and pillar limestone mine that uses mechanically anchored roof bolts for ground support. The mine currently employs two different roof bolting patterns: a standard 1.5 × 1.5 m pattern, and another 0.8 × 0.8 m pattern for use in areas with particularly hazardous roof conditions. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the relative effectiveness of each bolting pattern. A series of numerical models were created using Roc Science’s RS2. The models were based on a symmetrical section of the mine at its deepest point, and were modeled using generalized Hoek-Brown failure criterion along with a discrete fracture network. A series of sensitivity analyses were performed on the models by varying parameters such as joint friction angle, crack persistence, joint randomization, and tensile strength of the limestone. Based on the results of the original models and sensitivity analyses, it appeared that the standard bolting pattern provided sufficient roof support capacity under almost all the expected conditions at the mine, since safety factors below the design value of 1.5 were only found for individual bolts in a few of the worst test cases *** results can help improve the mine’s productivity and reduce operating costs without compromising safety.

One of the most common critical areas of longwall mining in terms of ground stability are the gateroad and bleeder *** critical entries provide much-needed safe access for miners and allow for adequate ventilation required for dilution of hazardous airborne contaminants and must remain open during mining of a multi-panel *** paper is focused on the stability of the longwall entries subjected to a single abutment load such as bleeders,first tailgate,and last *** tailgate and last headgate are also referred to as blind headgate and tailgate.A study of a longwall district through conditions mapping,support evaluations,and numerical modeling was conducted and evaluated by researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health(NIOSH).The condition mapping and support evaluations were performed on entries that spanned the previous five years of mining and relied on a diverse selection of supports to maintain the functionality of the *** modeling was also conducted to evaluate various support types with further investigation and comparison to the condition *** study demonstrated the importance of the abutment load decay versus distance from the gob edge,the potential for a reduction in material handling related injuries,as well as optimal usage of secondary and standing support.

Buildings represent a large part in terms of fossil energy consumption,which depends on the great need for *** if the solar absorption heat storage system is possible,the performance of this system is affected by the cycle limits and the climatic *** goal of the present study is to control the thermal performance of the system cycle according to the imposed climatic conditions of Bucharest city,Romania,and therefore a numerical model was developed for this *** scheme and the thermodynamic cycle,the energy and mass balance equations,and the computational algorithm were *** results show that the cycle temperature increases at the end of desorption when the heating power supplied to the desorber is increased,which is also proportional to the drop in temperature at the beginning of the *** temperature at the end of absorption and the mass flow rates of the solution have a significant effect on the thermal power released from the absorber and used to heat the *** an average daily heat power of 1.35 kW/m^(2) and 10 hours per day of heating the building,the system with a solar collector area of 3 m^(2) has the capacity of heat supply for all the cold ***,an economic strategy remains necessary.
