Antioxidant Effect of Herbs and Spices on Copper Mediated Oxidation of Lower and Very Low Density Lipoprotein

AIM:The present study investigates the antioxidant effect of two extracts(hydrolyzed and non-hydrolyzed)of five herbs and eight spices in the prevention of LDL+VLDL oxidation promoted by cupric ***:The polyphenolic concentrations of these extracts were measured using Folin-Ciocalteu *** antioxidant quality was analyzed by the determination of lag-time,concentration of polyphenol that will inhibit 50%of oxidation of LDL+VLDL(IC50)and phenol antioxidant index(PAOXI). RESULTS:The hydrolyzed extracts had significant higher polyphenol concentration,longer lag-time,lower IC50 and higher PAOXI than the non-hydrolyzed extracts(P<0.001).Thus,hydrolyzed extract contains better quantity and quality polyphenolic antioxidant than the non-hydrolyzed *** hydrolyzed and non-hydrolyzed extracts were better antioxidants than Vitamin E in the inhibition of LDL+VLDL ***:The reaction rate and concentration of conjugated diene formed suggested that all the extracts had similar reaction mechanism in the prevention of copper mediated LDL+VLDL oxidation.

From single to combinatorial therapies in spinal cord injuries for structural and functional restoration

Nefang is a polyherbal product composed of Mangifera indica（bark and leaf）,Psidium guajava,Carica papaya,Cymbopogon citratus,Citrus sinensis and Ocimum gratissimum（leaves）.It is often used in Cameroon traditional medicine as an *** studies have demonstrated its in vitro antiplasmodial activity,synergistic interactions between its constituents[1],antioxidant properties[2]and in vivo antiplasmodial efficacy（unpublished）.This study aimed at evaluating its cytotoxicity and in vivo *** screening was evaluated on Hep G2 hepatoma and U20 S osteosarcoma epithelial cell lines[3,4].Systemic acute oral toxicity was assessed in Swiss albino mice,while repeated dose（28 and 90 days） toxicity were studied in wistar rats at doses of 250,500 and 1000 mgkg-1 body weight[5].Physiological,biochemical and hematological parameters were analysed to determine its effects on the liver,kidney,lipid profile,nitrogen balance,glycemic levels and the hematological *** analysed using the one way ANOVA followed by Neuman-Keuls multiple comparison *** showed no significant cytotoxic *** and repeated dose oral toxicity produced no observed adverse effects at a dose ＞5 g/kg as well as on the liver,kidney and lipid profiles ***-acute administration of Nefang significantly（p＜0.05） lowered the GLU levels more than *** also observed a dose-dependent significant（p＜0.05） increase in white and red blood cells count,hemoglobin,hematocrit and platelet *** findings suggest that Nefang is relatively safe when administered orally after short or prolonged periods,at sub-therapeutic and therapeutic *** these doses,it exhibited potentials at maintaining the integral functioning of the liver,kidney and boosting the immune *** also showed good potentials at maintaining a good nitrogen balance and hypoglycemic *** study demonstrated the safety of Nefang,thus upholding knowledge on its folk use and suggest

Spinal cord injury results in paralysis, sensory disturbances, sphincter dysfunction, and multiple systemic secondary conditions, most arising from autonomic dysregulation. All this produces profound negative psychosocial implications for affected people, their families, and their communities;the financial costs can be challenging for their families and health institutions. Treatments aimed at restoring the spinal cord after spinal cord injury, which have been tested in animal models or clinical trials, generally seek to counteract one or more of the secondary mechanisms of injury to limit the extent of the initial damage. Most published works on structural/functional restoration in acute and chronic spinal cord injury stages use a single type of treatment: a drug or trophic factor, transplant of a cell type, and implantation of a biomaterial. Despite the significant benefits reported in animal models, when translating these successful therapeutic strategies to humans, the result in clinical trials has been considered of little relevance because the improvement, when present, is usually insufficient. Until now, most studies designed to promote neuroprotection or regeneration at different stages after spinal cord injury have used single treatments. Considering the occurrence of various secondary mechanisms of injury in the acute and sub-acute phases of spinal cord injury, it is reasonable to speculate that more than one therapeutic agent could be required to promote structural and functional restoration of the damaged spinal cord. Treatments that combine several therapeutic agents, targeting different mechanisms of injury, which, when used as a single therapy, have shown some benefits, allow us to assume that they will have synergistic beneficial effects. Monoclinic paracetamol (PA) is notorious as a poorly compactible model drug. Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) is a polymer that can act as an effective binder to improve the mechanical properties of PA. It is surprising however that the role of mixing conditions on the physicochemical and mechanical properties of PA-PVP mixtures has not been reported previously. The results of this work showed that PA-PVP mixtures containing 5%(w/w) PVP prepared using high energy mixing conditions had considerably smaller particle size distributions and higher cohesivities than mixtures prepared using low energy mixing conditions. Solid-state analysis did not detect any change in the monoclinic crystalline form of PA after mixing with PVP. The following rank order of tabletability for PA-PVP mixtures was obtained according to the mixing condition: low shear-medium shear< dry high shear< wet high shear< high-speed homogenization. A higher level of hydrogen bonding was detected in the mixtures prepared via high energy mixing conditions than in those prepared using low energy mixing conditions. Mixing is therefore a critical process that needs to be optimized during the preparation of in teractive mixtures for tableting.

【目的】本研究旨在评价樟脑罗勒Ocimum canum Sims(唇形科)叶的正己烷、丙酮和甲醇提取物对四纹豆象Callosobruchus maculatus(F.)的杀虫、保护和驱避潜力。【方法】用剂量为1和5 g/kg豆粒的樟脑罗勒提取物包被处理豇豆和大豆豆粒,并以相同剂量的市售苦楝籽油进行包被处理作为参照。7 d内每隔1 d检查处理豆粒中四纹豆象成虫的死亡率。在四纹豆象的各个未成熟期,通过处理新产卵和幼虫,进行杀卵毒性和杀幼虫毒性测试。贮存4个月后评价豆粒受损情况和重量损失。应用线型嗅觉仪,通过选择试验测定驱避效果。【结果】提取物对四纹豆象成虫的毒性与市售苦楝籽油相同,在处理的豇豆中,提取物比市售的苦楝籽油毒性更强。5 g/kg豆粒提取物这一剂量处理7 d内,正己烷、丙酮和甲醇提取物分别引起54.2%±3.9%,62.9%±4.8%和60.3%±4.5%的成虫死亡。此外,与测试的标准杀虫剂相比,提取物激发这两种豆粒产生更强的驱避效果。这一产物对卵的毒性最强,对1和2龄幼虫的毒性比对其他发育阶段豆象的毒性强。正己烷提取物对2龄幼虫的毒性最强(致死率为81.0%±5.3%),而丙酮提取物和甲醇提取物对1龄幼虫的毒性最强,致死率分别为92.5%±7.5%和62.0%±15.7%。丙酮提取物对1和2龄幼虫的毒性与测试的标准杀虫剂相似,对蛹的毒性强于测试的标准杀虫剂。贮存4个月后,豇豆受损和重量损失分别减轻3倍和2倍多。【结论】本研究结果表明,樟脑罗勒提取物对四纹豆象具有潜在的驱避和杀虫活性,由于容易获得,因此强烈建议将该植物用于喀麦隆的害虫治理策略中。

A case study on the efficacy of different roof bolting schemes in Lhoist North America’s Crab Orchard Mine

Roof bolting has long been used in underground mines across the world to provide ground *** roof bolts are cheap and easy to install with the use of specialized machines as a part of the production cycle. Lhoist North America’s Crab Orchard Mine is an underground room and pillar limestone mine that uses mechanically anchored roof bolts for ground support. The mine currently employs two different roof bolting patterns: a standard 1.5 × 1.5 m pattern, and another 0.8 × 0.8 m pattern for use in areas with particularly hazardous roof conditions. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the relative effectiveness of each bolting pattern. A series of numerical models were created using Roc Science’s RS2. The models were based on a symmetrical section of the mine at its deepest point, and were modeled using generalized Hoek-Brown failure criterion along with a discrete fracture network. A series of sensitivity analyses were performed on the models by varying parameters such as joint friction angle, crack persistence, joint randomization, and tensile strength of the limestone. Based on the results of the original models and sensitivity analyses, it appeared that the standard bolting pattern provided sufficient roof support capacity under almost all the expected conditions at the mine, since safety factors below the design value of 1.5 were only found for individual bolts in a few of the worst test cases *** results can help improve the mine’s productivity and reduce operating costs without compromising safety.

Buildings represent a large part in terms of fossil energy consumption,which depends on the great need for *** if the solar absorption heat storage system is possible,the performance of this system is affected by the cycle limits and the climatic *** goal of the present study is to control the thermal performance of the system cycle according to the imposed climatic conditions of Bucharest city,Romania,and therefore a numerical model was developed for this *** scheme and the thermodynamic cycle,the energy and mass balance equations,and the computational algorithm were *** results show that the cycle temperature increases at the end of desorption when the heating power supplied to the desorber is increased,which is also proportional to the drop in temperature at the beginning of the *** temperature at the end of absorption and the mass flow rates of the solution have a significant effect on the thermal power released from the absorber and used to heat the *** an average daily heat power of 1.35 kW/m^(2) and 10 hours per day of heating the building,the system with a solar collector area of 3 m^(2) has the capacity of heat supply for all the cold ***,an economic strategy remains necessary.

Most whole slide imaging(WSI)systems today rely on the"stop-and-stare"approach,where,at each field of view,the scanning stage is brought to a complete stop before the camera snaps a *** procedure ensures that each image is free of motion blur,which comes at the expense of long acquisition *** order to speed up the acquisition process,especially for large scanning areas,such as pathology slides,we developed an acquisition method in which the data is acquired continuously while the stage is moving at high *** generative adversarial networks(GANs),we demonstrate this ultra-fast imaging approach,referred to as GANscan,which restores sharp images from motion blurred *** allows us to complete image acquisitions at 30x the throughput of stop-and-stare *** method is implemented on a Zeiss Axio Observer Z1 microscope,requires no specialized hardware,and accomplishes successful reconstructions at stage speeds of up to 5000 μm/*** validate the proposed method by imaging H&E stained tissue *** method not only retrieves crisp images from fast,continuous scans,but also adjusts for defocusing that occurs during scanning within+/-5 μ*** a consumer GPU,the inference runs at<20 ms/image.
