C-reactive protein may be a prognostic factor for the whole gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumor group

BACKgROUND Long non-coding RNAs(lncRNAs) are a kind of single-stranded RNA of more than 200 nucleotides in length and have no protein-coding function. Amounting studies have indicated that lncRNAs could play a vital role in the initiation and development of cancers, including gastric cancer(gC). Considering the crucial functions of lncRNAs, the identification and exploration of novel lncRNAs in gC is *** To identify independent prognostic markers for the whole gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumor(gEP-NET) *** Ninety-three patients diagnosed with gEP-NETs within a specified period were included in this study. Patient data were retrospectively analyzed. The relationships between all independent variables and 5-year survival status calculated during the follow-up period(months) were assessed. In addition, the relationships between the independent variables were *** When 5-year survival rate was compared, a statistically significant relationship between the age at diagnosis, male gender, tumor size, tumor stage, liver and/or distant metastasis, and tumor grade determined by the Ki-67 level and mitotic count, and the level of C-reactive protein(CRP), was observed. The meansurvival(overall survival) of the study group was 102.5 ± 6.3(SD) mo. The percentages of 1, 3 and 5-year survival were 90%, 72%, and 61%, respectively. In63 of 93 patients, Ki-67 and the mitotic count determined the same grade. The Ki-67 levels in 29 patients and the mitotic count in only 1 patient were in the higher grade. The risk of death increased by 4% for every 1 year increase at the diagnosis age and was 2.0-fold higher for male patients, 3.0-fold higher for g3 according to the mitotic count, 3.7-fold higher for g3 according to the Ki-67 level, 12.7-fold higher for cases with tumor stage 3 or 4 by a 1 cm increase in the ratio of 9% in tumor size, and 6.1-fold higher for patients with liver metastasis for every 1 mg/dL increase in the ratio of 1.5% in CR

Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio in ocular diseases: a systematic review

AIM: To summarize the results of studies investigating neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio(NLR) and to identify the role of NLR in ocular diseases. METHODS: With the aim of identifying the studies related to NLR, a search was conducted on http://***/pubmed by utilizing the key words "neutrophil lymphocyte ratio, ocular diseases, and eye diseases" up to February 2018. All of the original articles were assessed according to date of publications, countries, clinics and topics. Studies about ocular inflammatory diseases were evaluated according to their qualifications, review methods and results. RESULTS: A total of 4473 publications, including original research articles and reviews were screened. The number of publications was shown a regular logarithmic increase over the years. The majority of studies were performed by clinics in Turkey and many of these publications were performed by oncology and cardiology clinics. A total of 75 publications were identified to be about ocular diseases. CONCLUSION: Elevated NLR as a cheap, reproducible, and readily available marker could be used as a diagnostic and/or prognostic marker in ocular diseases.

Frequency,types,and treatment of anemia in Turkish patients with inflammatory bowel disease

AIM to specify the type and prevalence of anemia along with a treatment approach for inflammatory bowel disease(IBD).METHODS We conducted a retrospective study on 465 patients who were diagnosed with IBD and followed up at our hospital from June 2015 to June 2016 [male: 254, female: 211; average age: 47 ± 14.4; Crohn's disease(CD): 257, Ulcerative Colitis(UC): 208]. Epidemiological and clinical data, such as sex, age, age of diagnosis, type of IBD, disease extension, disease behavior and duration, treatments for IBD and anemia, and surgical history were obtained for each patient. Per World Health Organization guidelines, anemia was diagnosed for males if hemoglobin values were less than 13 g/dL and for females if hemoglobin values were less than 12 g/d *** We determined that 51.6% of the patients had anemia, which was more frequent in women then men(64% vs 41.3%, P gher in CD cases(57.6%) than in UC cases(44.2%)(P = 0.004). CD involvements were as follows: 48.2% in ileal involvement, 19% in colonic involvement, and 32.8% in ileocolonic involvement. Furthermore, 27.5% of UC patients had proctitis(E1) involvement, 41% ofthem had involvement in left colitis(E2), and 31.5% had pancolitis involvement. There was no significant relationship between anemia frequency and duration of disease(P = 0.55). Iron deficiency anemia(IDA) was the most common type of anemia in this cohort. Moreover, because anemia parameters have not been evaluated during follow-up of 15.3% of patients, the etiology of anemia has not been clarified. Fifty percent of patients with anemia received treatment. Twentythree percent of IDA patients had oral iron intake and forty-one percent of IDA patients had parenteral iron treatment. Fifty-three percent of patients who were suffering from megaloblastic anemia received B12/folic acid *** We found out that almost half of all IBD patients(51.6%) had anemia, the most frequent of which was IDA. Clinical and impression cytology findings of amniotic membrane and oral mucosal membrane transplantation for the management of socket contracture

AIM:To investigate and compare the cytopathological and clinical effects of amniotic membrane transplantation(AMT)and oral mucosal membrane transplantation(OMMT)in socket ***:Twelve patients who could not be fitted with ocular prosthesis due to socket contracture were included in this *** patients underwent AMT and 5 patients underwent *** patients who had healthy sockets were included as control *** of inferior fornix,degree of inflammation,extent of the socket contracture and socket volume were measured in the preoperative period and at sixth and twelfth weeks *** cytology of conjunctival fornices and tear transforming growth factor beta-1(TgFβ1)levels were ***:In the AMT group,socket volume and lower fornix depth values were significantly higher(P=0.030and P=0.004 respectively)and inflammation levels and impression cytology stages(P=0.037 and P=0.022respectively)were significantly lower in postoperative period compared to preoperative *** the OMMT group,no statistical differences were found in terms of clinical parameters,inflammation levels and impression cytology stages of preoperative versus postoperative *** tear TgFβ1 levels were higher in AMT and OMMT groups compared to the control group(25.5 ng/mL,26.3 ng/mL and 21.7 ng/mL respectively).Decreased tear TgFβ1 levels were observed in both the AMT and OMMT groups postoperatively(median decrease value=2.1 ng/mL and 2.7 ng/mL respectively).CONCLUSION:AMT is associated with postoperative improvement in inferior fornix depth,socket volume,inflammation and impression cytology levels and may bea more proper alternative method than OMMT in the management of socket contracture.

Determination of Metastatic Axillary Lymph Node in Breast Cancer: Differentiation with Dynamic MRI Examination by Signal Intensity-Time Curves

Purpose: We aimed to evaluate the role of dynamic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the detection of axillary lymph node metastasis based on the signal intensity-time curves. Materials and Methods: The data of 120 patients (benign patients, n = 91;malignant patients, n = 29) who underwent dynamic breast MRI were reviewed. The lymph nodes with the strongest criteria for malignancy (morphological-dynamic properties) were included in the analysis. Signal intensity-time curves were plotted by the software. Results: Of 29 patients with breast cancer, axillary lymph nodes were involved in 21 and not involved in the remaining 8. There was no significant difference between benign and malignant cases in terms of the distributions of Type Ia, Type Ib and Type IV curves (p = 0.12), whereas a significant difference was found between benign and malignant cases in terms of the distributions of Type II and III curves (p Conclusion: On dynamic MRI studies, benign and metastatic lymph nodes display different signal intensity-time curves.

Power Doppler Vocal Fremitus Breast Sonography: Differential Diagnosis with a New Classification Scheme—Power Doppler Vocal Fremitus Examination of Breast Lesions

Purpose: In this study, unlike the previous studies, and Power Doppler vocal fremitus test (PDVFT) is utilized and is evaluated in subcategories to assess its role in the differentiation of benign and malignant lesions. Materials and Methods Thorough the 161 lesions of 147 patients are included in this prospective study. During PDVFT, it is determined that eight different fremitus patterns have broken out according to the colour aliasing during patient’s vocal phonation. It is also grouped as, according to the lesion color aliasing pattern during vibration: (c) for central, (p) for peripheral, (d) for perilesional-desmoplastic, (e) for eccentric, (h) for heterogenous-hierarchic, (s) for septal, (t) for total, (z) for absent-zero. Thereafter, the patterns and histopathological results of the lesions are correlated and analysed statistically. Results Out of 161 lesions, (benign: 133 and malignant, 28 cases) totally 189 patterns are encountered. None of the patterns z, t, s or e was detected in any of the malignant lesions. Specific values for different patterns have been obtained which changing between 29% and 100%. After adding the PDVFT finding, the newly generated BIRADS scheme has the accuracy value as high 91%. Conclusion When it is classified according to the colour aliasing pattern(s) of lesion in PDVFT;the “p” pattern is seen about the same ratio in both malign lesion and benign lesion (nonspecific patterns);“c, d, h” patterns mostly related with malignancy, whereas “e, s, t, z” patterns related with benignity. With adding the PDVFT findings;accuracy of well known BIRADS categorization and lesion demarcation were also improved successfully.
