On the use of formal methods to model and verify neuronal archetypes

Having a formal model of neural networks can greatly help in understanding and verifying their properties,behavior,and response to external factors such as disease and *** this paper,we adopt a formal model to represent neurons,some neuronal graphs,and their *** specific neuronal graphs are known for having biologically relevant structures and behaviors and we call them *** archetypes are supposed to be the basis of typical instances of neuronal information *** this paper we study six fundamental archetypes(simple series,series with multiple outputs,parallel composition,negative loop,inhibition of a behavior,and contralateral inhibition),and we consider two ways to couple two archetypes:(i)connecting the output(s)of the first archetype to the input(s)of the second archetype and(ii)nesting the first archetype within the second *** report and compare two key approaches to the formal modeling and verification of the proposed neuronal archetypes and some selected *** first approach exploits the synchronous programming language Lustre to encode archetypes and their couplings,and to express properties concerning their dynamic *** properties are verified thanks to the use of model *** second approach relies on a theorem prover,the Coq Proof Assistant,to prove dynamic properties of neurons and archetypes.

A discrete predictor-based control method is developed for a class of linear time-invariant networked control systems with a sensor-to-controller time-varying delay and a controller-to-actuator uncertain constant delay,which can be potentially applied to vision-based control *** control scheme is composed of a state prediction and a discrete predictor-based *** state prediction is used to compensate for the effect of the sensor-to-controller delay,and the system can be stabilized by the discrete predictor-based ***,it is shown that the control scheme is also robust with respect to slight message ***,the main theoretical results are illustrated by simulation results and experimental results based on a networked visual servo inverted pendulum system.

Interactions between diabetes and COVID-19:A narrative review

Diabetes,whether due to pancreatic beta cells insufficiency or peripheral resistance to insulin,has been suggested as a risk factor of developing severe acute respiratory disease coronavirus-2(SARS-CoV-2)***,diabetes has been associated with a higher risk of infections and higher risk of developing severe forms of coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)related *** patients often present associated comorbidities such as obesity,hypertension and cardiovascular diseases,and complications of diabetes,including chronic kidney disease,vasculopathy and relative immune dysfunction,all of which make them more susceptible to infectious ***,they often present lowgrade inflammation with increased circulating interleukin levels,endothelial susceptibility to inflammation and dysfunction,and finally,hyperglycemia,which increases this ***,corticosteroids,which count among the few medications which showed benefit on survival and mechanical ventilation requirement in COVID-19 pneumonia in large randomized controlled trials,are associated to new onsets of diabetes,and metabolic disorders in patients with previous history of ***,SARS-CoV-2 via the alternate effects of the renin-angiotensin system,mediated by the angiotensin-converting-enzyme 2,was also associated with insulin resistance in key tissues involved in glucose homeostasis,such as liver,skeletal muscles,and adipose tissue;and also,with impaired insulin secretion by pancreaticβ-*** this work,we reviewed all elements which may help understand how diabetes affects patients with COVID-19,how treatments affect outcomes in patients with COVID-19,how they may cause new onsets of diabetes,and finally review how SARS-CoV-2 may inherently be a risk factor of developing diabetes,through immune-mediated diabetogenic mechanisms.

Effect of intramolecular energy transfer on the rate of unimolecular isomerization: HCN --HNC

This paper reports calculations of the rate of isomerization of HCN - HCN based on the theory of Gary and Rice as extended by Zhao and Rice. The major task is to determine the effect of intramolecular energy transfer on the prediction of the rate of isomerization. Both the full three-dimensional (3D) system and the reduced two-dimensional (2D) system obtained from freezing CN bond at 1.159 A are analyzed to check the validity of the freezing bond approximation. Meanwhile, RRKM rates are calculated to test RRKM choice of the transition state by comparing to Gary-Rice three-state model. The comparison shows that the rates from 2D model and 3D model are differing up to 20% with 2D rates consistently larger. The intramolecular energy transfer modifies the isomerization rate for HCN system up to 30% that is modestly small by the expectation. The isomerization rate predicted from RRKM theory is greater than those of Gary-Rice three-state model theory up to 65%, and it overstimates the rates under all considerations, including the contribution from intramolecular energy transfer, for the studied system by about a factor of 2.

Endoscopic management of an esophagopericardial fistula after radiofrequency ablation for atrial fibrillation

A case is reported of a 76-year-old man with a past history of atrial fibrillation. A radiofrequency ablation procedure was suggested following several failed cardioversion attempts. However, an esophagopericardial fistula complicated the procedure. This life-threatening complication was successfully managed using both the placement of a covered esophageal stent and surgical pericardial and mediastinal drainage. In fact, no persisting fistula could be detected when the esophageal stent was removed seven weeks later. Atrioesophageal and esophagopericardial fistulas are two of the most severe complications associated with cardiological radiofrequency ablation procedures. They are responsible for majority of the deaths associated with this procedure. Despite the extremely high morbimortality associated with cardiothoracic surgery in such conditions, this treatment is the gold-standard for the management of such complications. This case report emphasizes the importance and efficacy of the endoscopic approach as part of a multidisciplinary management approach to this serious adverse event following radiofrequency ablation for atrial fibrillation.

In this formulation study,biocompatible non steroidal anti-inflammatory(NSAIDs)-loaded nanoparticles were designed as models to be further integrated in a prosthesis surface functionalization.A modified spontaneous emulsion-solvent diffusion methodology was used to produce drug-loaded PLGA nanoparticles without any purification or solvent evaporation *** parameters,such as lactide/glycolide ratio,polymer concentration,solvent/non solvent ratio and non solvent phase,as well as the non ionic tensioactive P188 co-precipitation composition were systematically *** optimized formulation(mean size:145 nm,surface charge:-13 m V) was employed to encapsulate various amounts of NSAIDs in a simple and scalable *** drug release was characterized in vitro by a complete release for 48 *** results encourage upcoming preliminary steps for in vivo experiments of prosthesis surface functionalization.

Eu2＋-doped oxyapatite SrxLalo-x （SiO4）6O3-x/2 phosphors are prepared by sofid-state reaction at high temper- atures under reducing atmosphere. Their crystal structures and photoluminescenee are investigated by x-ray diffraction （XRD） and fluorescence spectroscopy, respectively. The XlZtD results indicate that the samples are pure oxyapatite phase （P63/m space group）. The fluorescence spectra show two peaks corresponding to two sites （4f and 6h sites） for Eu2＋ in the host lattice. As the Eu2＋ content influences the intensity ratio of the two observed emission peaks, the photoluminescence mechanism is discussed.

Transforming growth factor-β and fibrosis

Transforming growth factor-β （TGF-β）, a prototype of multifunctional cytokine, is a key regulator of extracellular matrix （ECM） assembly and remodeling. Specifically, TGF-β isoforms have the ability to induce the expression of ECM proteins in mesenchymal cells, and to stimulate the production of protease inhibitors that prevent enzymatic breakdown of the ECM. Elevated TGF-β expression in affected organs, and subsequent deregulation of TGF-β functions, correlates with the abnormal connective tissue deposition observed during the onset of fibrotic diseases. During the last few years, tremendous progress has been made in the understanding of the molecular aspects of intracellular signaling downstream of the TGF-β receptors. In particular, Smad proteins, TGF-β receptor kinase substrates that translocate into the cell nucleus to act as transcription factors, have been studied extensively. The role of Smad3 in the transcriptional regulation of type I collagen gene expression and in the development of fibrosis, demonstrated both/n vitro and in animal models with a targeted deletion of Smad3, is of critical importance because it may lead to novel therapeutic strategies against these diseases. This review focuses on the mechanisms underlying Smad modulation of fibrillar collagen expression and how it relates to fibrotic processes.

Inflammation and colorectal cancer, when microbiota-host mutualism breaks

Structural changes in the gut microbial community have been shown to accompany the progressive development of colorectal *** this review we discuss recent hypotheses on the mechanisms involved in the bacteria-mediated carcinogenesis,as well as the triggering factors favoring the shift of the gut microbiota from a mutualistic to a pro-carcinogenic *** possible role of inflammation,bacterial toxins and toxic microbiota metabolites in colorectal cancer onset is specifically *** the other hand,the strategic role of inflammation as the keystone factor in driving microbiota to become carcinogenic is *** a common outcome of different environmental and endogenous triggers,such as diet,aging,pathogen infection or genetic predisposition,inflammation can compromise the microbiota-host mutualism,forcing the increase of pathobionts at the expense of health-promoting groups,and allowing the microbiota to acquire an overall pro-inflammatory *** inflammation in the gut,and favoring the bloom of toxigenic bacterial drivers,these changes in the gut microbial ecosystem have been suggested as pivotal in promoting *** this context,it will become of primary importance to implement dietary or probiotics-based interventions aimed at preserving the microbiota-host mutualism along aging,counteracting deviations that favor a pro-carcinogenic microbiota asset.

Allogenic banking of dental pulp stem cells for innovative therapeutics

Medical research in regenerative medicine and cellbased therapy has brought encouraging perspectives for the use of stem cells in clinical trials. Multiple types of stem cells, from progenitors to pluripotent stem cells, have been investigated. Among these, dental pulp stem cells(DPSCs) are mesenchymal multipotent cells coming from the dental pulp, which is the soft tissue within teeth. They represent an interesting adult stem cell source because they are recovered in large amount in dental pulps with non-invasive techniques compared to other adult stem cell sources. DPSCs can be obtained from discarded teeth, especially wisdom teeth extracted for orthodontic reasons. To shift from promising preclinical results to therapeutic applications to human, DPSCs must be prepared in clinical grade lots and transformed into advanced therapy medicinal products(ATMP). As the production of patient-specific stem cells is costly and time-consuming, allogenic biobanking of clinical grade human leukocyte antigen(HLA)-typed DPSC lines provides efficient innovative therapeutic products. DPSC biobanks represent industrial and therapeutic innovations by using discarded biological tissues(dental pulps) as a source of mesenchymal stem cells to produce and store, in good manufacturing practice(GMP) conditions, DPSC therapeutic batches. In this review, we discuss about the challenges to transfer biological samples from a donor to HLA-typed DPSC therapeutic lots, following regulations, GMP guidelines and ethical principles. We also present some clinical applications, for which there is no efficient therapeutics so far, but that DPSCs-based ATMP could potentially treat.
