Helicobacter pylori(***)is a bacterium that infects more than a half of world’s *** it is mainly related to the development of gastroduodenal diseases,several studies have shown that such infection may also influence the development and severity of various extragastric *** to the current evidence,whereas this bacterium is a risk factor for some of these manifestations,it might play a protective role in other pathological *** that context,when considered the gastrointestinal tract,*** positivity have been related to Inflammatory Bowel Disease,Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease,Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease,Hepatic Carcinoma,Cholelithiasis,and ***,lower serum levels of iron and vitamin B12 have been found in patients with *** infection,leading to the emergence of anemias in a portion of *** regards to neurological manifestations,a growing number of studies have associated that bacterium with multiple sclerosis,Alzheimer’s disease,Parkinson’s disease,and Guillain-Barré***,the risk of developing cardiovascular disorders,such as atherosclerosis,is also influenced by the *** that,the ***-associated inflammation may also lead to increased insulin resistance,leading to a higher risk of diabetes mellitus among infected ***,the occurrence of dermatological and ophthalmic disorders have also been related to that *** this sense,this minireview aims to gather the main studies associating *** infection with extragastric conditions,and also to explore the main mechanisms that may explain the role of *** in those diseases.

Antiglycation,antioxidant,antiacne,and photoprotective activities of crude extracts and triterpene saponin fraction of Sapindus saponaria ***:An in vitro study

Objective:To evaluate the photoprotective,antioxidant,antiglycation,and antiacne activities of crude extract(CESs)and triterpene saponin fraction(TSSs)of Sapindus ***:HPLC-MS purification was performed on a Symmetry TM C18 *** saponins were identified by a UV *** activity was evaluated by DPPH and O_(2)^(−)radicals scavenging,and FRAP and TBARS *** activity was assessed by relative electrophoretic mobility and inhibition of advanced glycation end products(AGEs)***,antiacne activity was determined by inhibition of Cutibacterium acnes,and photoprotective effect was evaluated by Mansur’s ***:Most of the triterpene saponins detected in the fraction by HPLC-MS analysis were hederagenin as the *** and TSSs presented varying antioxidant activity in DPPH(CESs:75.69%and TSSs:83.65%),FRAP(CESs:425.39μM TE/g DW and TSSs:649.36μM TE/g DW),TBARS(CESs:42.96%and TSSs:52.16%)and O_(2)^(−)radicals scavenging(CESs:61.33%and TSSs:86.69%)*** and TSSs also exhibited antiglycation activity comparable to bovine serum albumin treated with *** addition,CESs and TSSs showed inhibition of AGE formation(34.48%and 61.85%,respectively).Antiacne activity against Cutibacterium acnes was observed with a minimum inhibitory concentration equal to minimum bactericidal concentration(CESs:36.11µg/mL and TSSs:18.34µg/mL).In photoprotective assays,CESs and TSSs showed maximum absorbance of 1.42 to 0.20 and 2.80 to 1.30,respectively,in the wavelength range of 260 to 400 ***,CESs and TSSs showed sun protection factors of 8.89 and 14.89,***:Sapindus saponaria fruit extracts show strong antioxidant potential and antiglycation activity against bovine serum albumin glycation and AGE ***,they presented antibacterial activity against Cutibacterium acnes and photoprotective effect against UV-A and UV-B.

Helicobacter pylori(***)is a gram-negative bacterium that infects approximately 4.4 billion individuals ***,its prevalence varies among different geographic areas,and is influenced by several *** infection can be acquired by means of oral-oral or fecal-oral transmission,and the pathogen possesses various mechanisms that improve its capacity of mobility,adherence and manipulation of the gastric microenvironment,making possible the colonization of an organ with a highly acidic *** addition,*** presents a large variety of virulence factors that improve its pathogenicity,of which we highlight cytotoxin associated antigen A,vacuolating cytotoxin,duodenal ulcer promoting gene A protein,outer inflammatory protein and gamma-glutamyl *** host immune system,mainly by means of a Th1-polarized response,also plays a crucial role in the infection *** most ***-positive individuals remain asymptomatic,the infection predisposes the development of various clinical conditions as peptic ulcers,gastric adenocarcinomas and mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue *** and non-invasive diagnostic methods,each of them with their related advantages and limitations,have been applied in *** ***,bacterial resistance to antimicrobial therapy is a major challenge in the treatment of this infection,and new therapy alternatives are being tested to improve *** *** but not least,the development of effective vaccines against *** infection have been the aim of several research studies.

Relevance of MUC1 mucin variable number of tandem repeats polymorphism in H pylori adhesion to gastric epithelial cells

AIM:To evaluate the influence of MUC1 mucin variable number of tandem repeats (VNTR) variability on H pylori adhesion to gastric cells. METHODS: Enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA)-based adhesion assays were performed to measure the adhesion of different H pylori strains (HP26695 and HPTx30a) to gastric carcinoma cell lines (GP202 and MKN45) and GP202 clones expressing recombinant MUC1 with different VNTR lengths. RESULTS: Evaluation of adhesion results shows that H pylori pathogenic strain HP26695 has a significantly higher (P < 0.05) adhesion to all the cell lines and clones tested, when compared to the non-pathogenic strain HPTx30a. Bacteria showed a significantly higher (P < 0.05) adhesion to the GP202 cell line, when compared to the MKN45 cell line. Furthermore, both strains showed a significantly higher (P < 0.05) adhesion to GP202 clones with larger MUC1 VNTR domains. CONCLUSION: This work shows that MUC1 mucin variability conditions H pylori binding to gastric cells. The extent of bacterial adhesion depends on the size of theMUC1 VNTR domain. The adhesion is further dependent on bacterial pathogenicity and the gastric cell line. MUC1 mucin variability may contribute to determine H pylori colonization of the gastric mucosa.

Owls and Mobbing Behavior： Anecdotal Observations

Mobbing behavior is an important and widespread antipredatory behavior. This is a well-known behavior especially in birds. There are many studies about mobbing in birds, and most of them use owls as a model of predator. However it is not clear how mobbing works when a predator assume a role of a prey. In this paper we organize field observations, which were taken on records of mobbing behaviors performed by owls or by other animals against them. These observations were collected nearby four Brazilian cities in South-Eastern and Central Brazil： Joao Monlevade / MG, Sacramento / MG Baguari / MG and Cacu / GO. Events of mobbing behavior have always involved prey（s） and predator（s） thus, in this study we presents mobbing events which species of owl always were involved, and beside the owls, other animals like mammals or raptors. These records are important due to their infrequency and problems to be detected in natural field conditions. It is rare mobbing events when an owl assumes a role of a prey, and there are few studies that show the mobbing by the predator optics. The present data may contribute for elucidation of mobbing behavior intrinsic aspects.

Tertiary peritonitis: A disease that should not be ignored

Intra-abdominal infections can be classified into uncomplicated or complicated(peritonitis). Peritonitis is divided into primary, secondary, and tertiary. Tertiaryperitonitis is the less common but the most severe among peritonitisstratifications, being defined as a recurrent intra-abdominal infection that occurs48 h after a well-succeeded control of a secondary peritonitis. This disease has acomplex pathogenesis that is closely related to the capacity of the peritonealcavity to activate immunological processes. Patients who progress to persistentperitonitis are at an increased risk of developing several infectious complicationssuch as sepsis and multiple organ failure syndrome. Moreover, tertiary peritonitisremains an important cause of hospital death mainly among patients withassociated risk factors. The microbiological profile of organisms causing tertiaryperitonitis is often different from that observed in other types of peritonitis. Inaddition, there is a high prevalence of multidrug-resistant pathogens causing thiscondition, and an appropriate and successful clinical management depends on anearly diagnosis, which can be made easier with the use of clinical scorespresenting a good prediction value during the intensive care unit ***, immediate therapy should be performed to control theinfectious focus and to prevent new recurrences. In this sense, the treatment isbased on initial antimicrobial therapy and well-performed peritoneal drainage.

The Scientific Initiation in the Graduation Courses of UEMG＇s Faculty of Engineering： Disparities and Challenges

The notoriety of the shortage of qualified professionals in the engineering segment to meet the existing projects and also the future ones is worrying the academic community. These challenges show how the lack of appropriate courses and low expenses with incentives to research and extension programs can affect the formation of the future engineer. Therefore, universities have the mission to develop teaching, research and extension, offering to the students new opportunities for diverse technical training, scientific and humanist formation. It is noted, however, that such activities in many engineering courses, especially scientific research, are not being prioritized by the universities. In light of this, the present paper aims to register measure and evaluate the participation of the students in scientific initiation in the four engineering courses of the Faculty of Engineering of the Minas Gerais State University. Sticking to the disparities presented by the four courses studied, in relation to the participation in research projects, the results showed a greater engagement of students of Environmental Engineering and Mining Engineering courses regarding the other engineering courses. In addition, a better divulgation and a greater involvement of teachers in projects were identified as the main recurring challenges to the access in scientific research by the students of this institution.
