High density lipoprotein as a therapeutic target:Focus on its functionality

Cardiovascular diseases(CVDs)are the leading cause of death *** are a group of disorders of the heart and blood vessels and include coronary heart disease,cerebrovascular disease and rheumatic heart disease among other *** are multiple independent risk factors for CVD,including hypertension,age,smoking,insulin resistance,elevated low-density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL-C)levels,and triglyceride ***-C levels have traditionally been the target for therapies aimed at reducing CVD *** density lipoprotein(HDL)constitutes the only lipoprotein fraction with atheroprotective *** HDL-targeted therapies have focused on increasing HDL-C ***,clinical trials have shown that raising HDL-C with niacin failed to achieve CVD reduction.A possible explanation for these findings is that these drugs could interfere with lipid metabolism and cause alterations in HDL structure and composition,leading to loss of *** a result,targeting HDL-C levels would be insufficient to achieve CVD risk reduction,making HDL functionality a more desirable focus for HDL-directed *** are several drugs which show the potential to improve HDL *** drugs include molecules already approved for human use,such as statins and niacin,and particularly,compounds currently undergoing development such as apolipoprotein A-I mimetics and reconstituted HDL *** therapies show promising potential to improve HDL functionality *** therapeutic strategies should incorporate HDL functionality as a main target of interest.

Markers of inflammation and cardiovascular disease in recently diagnosed celiac disease patients

AIM To evaluate novel risk factors and biomarkers of car-diovascular disease in celiac disease(CD) patients compared with healthy controls. METHODS Twenty adult patients with recent diagnosis of CD and 20 sex, age and body mass index-matched healthy controls were recruited during a period of 12 mo. Indicators of carbohydrate metabolism, hematological parameters and high sensitive C reactive protein were determined. Moreover, lipoprotein metabolism was also explored through evaluation of the lipid profile andthe activity of cholesteryl ester transfer protein and lipoprotein associated phospholipase A2, which is also considered a specific marker of vascular inflammation. The protocol was approved by the Ethic Committee from School of Pharmacy and Biochemistry, University of Buenos Aires and from Buenos Aires Italian Hospital, Buenos Aires, *** Regarding the indicators of insulin resistance, CD patients showed higher plasma insulin levels [7.2(5.0-11.3) m U/L vs 4.6(2.6-6.7) m U/L, P < 0.05], increased Homeostasis Model Assessment-Insulin Resistance [1.45(1.04-2.24) vs 1.00(0.51-1.45), P < 0.05] and lower Quantitative Sensitive Check index [0.33(0.28-0.40) vs 0.42(0.34-0.65), P < 0.05] indexes. Folic acid concentration [5.4(4.4-7.9) ng/m L vs 12.2(8.0-14.2) ng/m L, P < 0.01] resulted to be lower and High-sensitivity C reactive protein levels higher(4.21 ± 6.47 mg/L vs 0.98 ± 1.13 mg/L, P < 0.01) in the patient group. With respect to the lipoprotein profile, CD patients showed lower high density lipoprotein-cholesterol(HDL-C)(45 ± 15 mg/d L vs 57 ± 17 mg/d L, P < 0.05) and apo A-I(130 ± 31 mg/d L vs 155 ± 29 mg/d L, P < 0.05) levels, as well as higher total cholesterol/HDL-C [4.19(3.11-5.00) vs 3.52(2.84-4.08), P < 0.05] and apo B/apo A-I(0.75 ± 0.25 vs 0.55 ± 0.16, P < 0.05) ratios in comparison with control subjects. Physiological Potential of Seeds of Perennial Soybean cv. Comum Coated with Different Materials

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of different seed coatings on the physiological potential of perennial soybean cv. Comum. The following treatments were tested: control (no coating);limestone + polyvinyl acetate (PVA);limestone + sand + PVA;limestone + charcoal + PVA;calcium silicate + PVA;calcium silicate + sand + PVA;and calcium silicate + charcoal + PVA. Seeds were evaluated for water content (WC), maximum diameter (MAD), minimum diameter (MID), 1000-seed weight (TSW), germination test, germination speed index (GSI), average germination time (AGT), emergence, emergence speed index (ESI), average emergence time (AET), shoot length (SL), root length (RL), dry and fresh matter of shoots (SDM and SFM), and dry and fresh matter of root (RDM and RFM). Coatings influenced GSI, AGT, emergence, and ESI, but germination was unaffected. The use of silicate with or without charcoal led to the same AET as that observed in the uncoated seeds. Coatings did not affect SFM, SDM, or RFM. Coating with limestone + sand + PVA or limestone + charcoal + PVA led to increases in SL, SFM, SDM, RFM, and RDM.

Power and Architecture in Portuguese Fascism： Political and Artistic Control and Resistance

This paper analyses the system of artistic and ideological conditioning that architects were subject to during the Portuguese fascism, the so-called "New State", the longest western European dictatorship of the previous century, that lasted from 1933 to 1974, under the uninterrupted leadership of António de Oliveira Salazar until 1968. After a concise exposition of the importance of a major public work campaign to the regime affirmation as well as the aesthetic discourse promoted in its architecture, the standard course of a building project evaluation will be described. Crossing varied legislation and taking into consideration the results of a thorough examination to more than one hundred processes of architectural plans approval, the interaction of the various decision-making bodies will illustrate the existence of an efficient apparatus which progressively depurate designs. Prevention and repression of artistic deviation will be demonstrated. Furthermore, the development and importance of self-censorship will be highlighted. Secondly, a characterization of the atmosphere of ideological surveillance and dissident"s oppression will be provided. Architects" participation in opposition"s initiatives and strategies will be portrayed. As a conclusion, New State practice of a negotiation and inclusion (both artistic and ideological) tactic in the architectural field will be underlined.

Owls and Mobbing Behavior： Anecdotal Observations

Mobbing behavior is an important and widespread antipredatory behavior. This is a well-known behavior especially in birds. There are many studies about mobbing in birds, and most of them use owls as a model of predator. However it is not clear how mobbing works when a predator assume a role of a prey. In this paper we organize field observations, which were taken on records of mobbing behaviors performed by owls or by other animals against them. These observations were collected nearby four Brazilian cities in South-Eastern and Central Brazil Joao Monlevade / MG, Sacramento / MG Baguari / MG and Cacu / GO. Events of mobbing behavior have always involved prey(s) and predator(s) thus, in this study we presents mobbing events which species of owl always were involved, and beside the owls, other animals like mammals or raptors. These records are important due to their infrequency and problems to be detected in natural field conditions. It is rare mobbing events when an owl assumes a role of a prey, and there are few studies that show the mobbing by the predator optics. The present data may contribute for elucidation of mobbing behavior intrinsic aspects.

Tibolone Reverses NAFLD in Ovariectomised Rats by Reducing Adiposity and Insulin Resistance

This study aimed to investigate the effects of tibolone,a synthetic steroid,on several metabolic dysfunctions induced by oestrogen deficiency,in ***(OVX)rats were used as animal model of postmenopausal metabolic *** OVX rats were treated with daily doses of tibolone(0.16 mg/kg)and the results were compared with control(sham-operated)and OVX untreated *** reduced the adiposity and the visceral adipocyte size in OVX *** insulin sensitivity was also improved,and a decrease in the activity of the adipose tissue hormone-sensitive lipase enzyme was *** lower lipolysis by visceral adipocytes,associated with the recovery of peroxisomalβ-oxidation by tibolone may have contributed to the reversion of NAFLD in treated OVX *** reduction of liver lipid contents resulted in a general improvement in the liver redox *** addition,tibolone reduced the mitochondrial ROS generation and restored the activity of glucose-6-phosphate *** also exerted antioxidant effects on inguinal adipose *** exerted several beneficial effects on cellular and metabolic dysfunctions induced by ovariectomy in *** important mode of action of tibolone was the reduction of the visceral adipocyte size,corroborating the relationship between this one and the development and progression of several comorbidities associated with metabolic syndrome.
