Objective:To evaluate the antibacterial effect of aqueous and ethanolic moringa leaf extracts (Moringa oleifera) on the growth of gram-positive and negative ***:Paper disks were soaked with 100,200,300 and 400μL of extract at 20 g/180mL and 10 g/190 *** extracts were tested against Escherichia coli(ATCC25922),Staphylococcus aureus(ATCC25923),Vibrio parahaemolyticus,Enterococcus faecalis(ATCC29212),Pseudomonas aeruginosa(ATCC27853), Salmonella enteritidis(IH) and Aeromonas *** susceptibility tests were performed using the modified disk diffusion ***:The strains ***,*** and *** (IH) were resistant to all *** general,disks with 400μL extract were the most efficient against ***,***,*** and ***:The study indicates a promising potential for aqueous and ethanolic Moringa leaf extracts as alternative treatment of infections caused by the tested strains.

To the Editor： Xie et al, analyzed warfarin doses in pulmonary embolism （PE） and its adverse effects in patients with obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome （OSAHS）. The key findings were that OSAHS patients required a significantly higher dose of warfarin than their non-OSAHS counterparts （4.73 mg vs. 3.61 mg, P 〈 0.001） and that PE recurrence was higher in OSAHS than in non-OSAHS groups after withdrawal ofwarfarin （21.43% vs. 6.78%, P = 0.047）.

The methodology to obtain the non-linear roll damping from decay tests is very old. It has been proposed by Froude in the 19th century and used from then on. Behind it there is a quadratic model [θ｜θ｜] for the damping and a subsequent equivalent linearization. Probably all model basin in the world follows this approach to assess the damping from a methods to get the P1-P2 coefficients. This is very applied to any kind of hull. However, it has become decay test. This is well documented and so is the general in the sense that in principle, it could be clear that for hull with a flat bottom such as a very large crude carrier （VLCC）, this approach may lead to confusing results such as negative P2. Faced with this, the work presents a completely new idea. Avoiding the polynomial approximation, the basic attitude is to devise two regions from the decaying test response. The first, called the large amplitude response region yields a larger damping, probably due to the large bilge keel vortices that are attracted to the hull flat bottom. The second is the small amplitude response region where the vortices are not attracted to the bottom but travels approximately 45° sidewise. These observations has led to a new approach called the bi-linear approach as discussed in the work after analyzing several （many） model test results. In fact, a new modified bi-linear approach is ultimately proposed after the understanding of a transition region instead of a transition angle.

The transformation of quantitative variables into categories is a common practice in both experimental and observational studies. The typical procedure is to create groups by splitting the original variable distribution at some cut point on the scale of measurement (e.g. mean, median, mode). Allegedly, dichotomization improves causal inference by simplifying statistical analyses. In this article, we address some of the adverse consequences of recoding quantitative variables into categories. In particular, we provide evidence that categorization usually leads to inefficient and biased estimates. We believe that considerable progress in our understanding of data analysis can occur if scholars follow the recommendations presented in this article. The recodification of quantitative variables as categorical is a poor methodological strategy, and scientists must stay away from it.

In the Amazon region,several residues that have been misused can serve as feedstocks for biochar production with the aim of recovering soils contaminated by heavy ***,these biochars need to be firstly tested for their adsorption capacity as well as their physicochemical attributes prior to field ***,this study aimed to characterize and evaluate the adsorption capacities of Cd^(2+) and Cu^(2+) of biochars produced from acai(BA),Brazil nut(BN),and palm kernel cake(BK)*** were produced by slow pyrolysis at four different temperatures(400,500,600,and 700℃).The physicochemical properties of the biochars,such as cation exchange capacity,ash,recalcitrance index,and aromaticity were enhanced with increased pyrolysis *** adsorption capacities of Cd^(2+) and Cu^(2+) showed high correlations with the physicochemical properties of biochar,indicating the importance of these characteristics in the adsorption ***,the adsorption of Cd^(2+) and Cu^(2+) also increased with the increase in the pyrolysis *** a competitive system,Cd^(2+)exhibited higher adsorption capacity than Cu^(2+) for all *** general,BN showed the highest adsorption capacity,followed by BK and *** produced from the Amazonian residues have the potential to improve soil quality when used as amendments in the recovery of soils contaminated with Cd and Cu,representing an environmentally sound technology for the reuse of these residues.

Bunchosia glandulifera belongs to the family Malpighiaceae and is popularly known as “caferana” in the city of Santo antonio da Patrulha. The fruits have a high economic value and their inclusion in the diet has health benefits. They are natural sources of antioxidants because of the presence of bioactive compounds. However, their chemical composition can be influenced by the maturation process. This study aims to evaluate the changes in the bioactive antioxidant compounds in the pulp and seeds of B. glandulifera fruit during different stages of ripening. The fruits, were analyzed for caffeine, carotenoids, flavonoids, vitamin C, and total phenolic content as well as for antioxidant activity, at four different stages of ripening. An increase in bioactive compounds was observed from the second maturation stage to the ripened fruit, and the ripened fruit had the highest bioactive compound content. Phenolic compound and carotenoid levels were found to be highest in the pulp. Carotenoid content showed a positive correlation with the antioxidant activity. Colorimetric analysis also showed a high correlation between the levels of carotenoids and color change during the ripening stages.

River Network and the Risk of Flooding for the Railway and Subway Systems in the City of Sao Paulo, Brazil

This study investigated the risk of flooding along the Sao Paulo city＇s railway network and showed its latest technologies. To that end, we took into account topographic and hydrological features, as well as possible interferences of the flooding phenomenon with the optimal operation of the railway system. When preparing the maps and the flooding risk analysis, we used data from project SRTM （Shuttle Radar Topography Mission） integrated and processed in a GIS （geographical information system）, through version 2.14 of the geoprocessing software ＂QGis＂. Results showed risk exposure for logistics operations of the railway system for the transportation of passengers, especially in the Central and Eastern regions of the city, where there is a higher concentration of points of flooding, thus making it more difficult for passengers to come and go in the greatest city of Brazil.

Inguinal Hernia Repair with Local Anesthesia in the Outpatient—10 Year Experience

Objective: To demonstrate the feasibility of inguinal hernia repair with local anesthesia in an out-patient regime, with safety, efficacy and short learning curve. Methods: We prospectively evaluated 1186 patients undergoing inguinal hernia repair under local anesthesia on an outpatient basis between November 2004 and March 2014. Of the total number of hernias surgically treated in this period, 755 were operated on the right, 394 on the left and 37 bilateral. We used clinical, surgical and psychosocial criteria for inclusion in the procedure. The parameters for exclusion were complex, irreducible or recurrent hernia, obesity (BMI greater than 30 kg/m2), patient’s refusal and psychiatric disorder. All patients underwent elective surgery and were analyzed regarding surgical outcome, complications and hospital stay. Results: All operations were completed successfully. In no case there was a need to change the anesthetic method. Surgical time was similar to that conducted with other methods of anesthesia and there were no cases of adverse effects of local anesthetics. Intra-operative complications amounted to approximately 2.64%. There was no need for hospital admissions greater than 24 hours. Conclusion: The procedure is feasible and causes no perioperative significant pain, is safe, can be performed by residents under supervision, has satisfactory patient acceptance and complications similar to those observed in a conventional herniorrhaphy, allowing lower time and cost of hospitalization and faster access to treatment.

Infections Following Kidney Transplant in Children: A Single-Center Study

Introduction: Infections are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in pediatric patients undergoing kidney transplantation (KT). Aim and Methods: To determine the patterns of infectious complications during the first 6 months post transplantation, we report our single center experience with data from pediatric kidney recipients transplanted between 2006 and 2011. Results: Thirty-two children (20 males) were submitted to KT. The most common cause of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) was congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT) accounting for 62%. Over the first 6 months post-transplant period, twenty-eight (87.5%) children developed a total of 77 infections, mainly urinary tract infections (UTI) (64.9%). CAKUT etiology of ESRD and UTI before KT increased the risk to develop more than one episode of UTI [71.4% vs. 14.3% and 81.8% vs. 18.2%, respectively;p < 0.05]. Twenty-three (29.9%) viral infections occurred. Cytomegalovirus (CMV) was the most common opportunistic pathogen, occurred in 11 patients and was more frequently in those with a donor (D)+/recipient (R)- CMV sero-status [74.5% vs. 25.5% (p < 0.05)]. A polyomaviruses (BKV) disease with nephropathy and meningitis was registered. The majority of infectious episodes had mild or moderate severity. No deaths occurred. Conclusion: A significant number of patients presented infectious complications during the first 6 months post transplantation. UTI are the most common type of infection, followed by viral infections, particularly CMV. Recognition, prevention and early treatment of infections are of major importance.
