Discrepancies between the responses to skin prick test to food and respiratory antigens in two subtypes of patients with irritable bowel syndrome

AIM:To compare the response to skin prick tests (SPTs) to food antigens (fAs) and inhalant allergens (IAs) in patients with two subtypes of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and healthy controls. METHODS:We compared the results of SPTs for IAs and fAs in 87 volunteers divided into three groups:diarrhea predominant IBS (D-IBS) GroupⅠ(n = 19), constipation predominant IBS (C-IBS) Group Ⅱ (n = 17), and normal controls Group Ⅲ (n = 51). RESUlTS:Of the 285 tests (171 for fAs and 114 for IAs) performed in GroupⅠwe obtained 45 (26.3%) positive responses for fA and 23 (20.1%) for IA. Of the 153 tests for fA in Group Ⅱ, we obtained 66 (20.1%) positive responses, and of the 102 tests for IA, we obtained 20 (19.6%) positive responses. Of the 459 tests for fA performed in Group Ⅲ, we obtained 39 (84%) positive responses, and of the 306 for IA, we obtained 52 (16.9%) positive responses. The numbers of positive responses were not significantly different between the three groups, but in the D-IBS group, the number of SPTfA responses differed significantly from those for the other two groups (P lUSION:Despite the small number of cases studied, the higher reactivity to fAs in GroupⅠcompared to Groups Ⅱ and Ⅲ adds new information, and suggests the presence of a possible alteration in intestinal epithelial function.

Extrahepatic right hepatic duct diverticulum: a rare entity

BACKGROUND:Douglas described choledochal cysts in 1852 and Todani proposed an anatomy-based classification in 1977. The classification is the most extensively used,but does not include some rare *** present a case of hepatic duct diverticulum,one of the variations,and discuss its diagnosis and treatment. METHODS:A 57-year-old woman presented with upper abdominal pain and discomfort associated with nausea and *** was finally diagnosed with cholelithiasis and right hepatic duct diverticulum. RESUlT:The patient underwent resection of the hepatic duct diverticulum and cholecystectomy,and was asymptomatic 26 months after surgery. CONClUSIONS:Hepatic duct diverticulum is a rare form of choledochal cyst,not included in Todani’s classification. Todani’s classification including this and other uncommon variations of choledochal cysts must be *** best diagnostic imaging methods and treatment for choledochal cysts must be defined.

Gain and ultrafast optical switching in PMMA optical fibers and films doped with luminescent conjugated polymers and oligomers

Conjugated luminescent polymers and oligomers, exhibiting stimulated emission(SE), are dispersed in polymethylmethacrylate(PMMA), films and optical fibers,either by blending or upon copolymerisation. With this PMMA doping, we aim to achieve gain and ultrafast optical switching. The modification of the dopant's chemical structure allows the tuning of the SE spectral region. furthermore, we aim to achieve dopant chain isolation while maximising their concentration. In this paper, we present an overview of the research done in this area in the context of the European Union(EU)-funded research project “plastic optical fibers with embedded active polymers for data communications——POlYCOM”.

In vivo study of conductive 3D printed PCl/MWCNTs scaffolds with electrical stimulation for bone tissue engineering

Critical bone defects are considered one of the major clinical challenges in reconstructive bone *** combination of 3D printed conductive scaffolds and exogenous electrical stimulation(ES)is a potential favorable approach for bone tissue *** this study,3D conductive scaffolds made with biocompatible and biodegradable polycaprolactone(PCl)and multi-walled carbon nanotubes(MWCNTs)were produced using the extrusion-based additive manufacturing to treat large calvary bone defects in *** results show that the use of PCl/MWCNTs scaffolds and ES contributes to thicker and increased bone tissue formation within the bone *** and mineralization are also significantly promoted using high concentration of MWCNTs(3 wt%)and ***,scaffolds favor the tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase(TRap)positive cell formation,while the addition of MWCNTs seems to inhibit the osteoclastogenesis but present limited effects on the osteoclast functionalities(receptor activator of nuclear factor κβ ligand(RANKl)and osteoprotegerin(OPG)expressions).The use of ES promotes the osteoclastogenesis and RANKl expressions,showing a dominant effect in the bone remodeling *** results indicate that the combination of 3D printed conductive PCl/MWCNTs scaffold and ES is a promising strategy to treat critical bone defects and provide a cue to establish an optimal protocol to use conductive scaffolds and ES for bone tissue engineering.

Time-Series Embeddings from language Models:A Tool for Wind Direction Nowcasting

Wind direction nowcasting is crucial in various sectors,particularly for ensuring aviation operations and *** this context,the TElMo(Time-series Embeddings from language Models)model,a sophisticated deep learning architecture,has been introduced in this work for enhanced wind-direction *** by using three years of data from multiple stations in the complex terrain of an international airport,TElMo incorporates the horizontal u(east-west)and v(north-south)wind components to significantly reduce forecasting *** a day with high wind direction variability,TElMo achieved mean absolute error values of 5.66 for 2-min,10.59 for 10-min,and 14.79 for 20-min forecasts,processed within a swift 9-ms/step *** degree-based analysis,in comparison,yielded lower performance,emphasizing the effectiveness of the u and v *** contrast,a Vanilla neural network,representing a shallow-learning approach,underperformed in all analyses,highlighting the superiority of deep learning methodologies in wind direction *** is an efficient model,capable of accurately forecasting wind direction for air traffic operations,with an error less than 20°in 97.49%of the predictions,aligning with recommended international *** model design enables its applicability across various geographical locations,making it a versatile tool in global aviation meteorology.

Retrieval of Elastic Green’s Tensor near a Cylindrical Inhomogeneity from Vector Correlations

Multiple scattering of elastic waves in realistic media makes that averagefield intensities or energy densities follow diffusive processes. In such regime the successiveP to S energy conversions by distributed random inhomogeneities give rise toequipartition which means that in the phase space the available elastic energy is distributedin averagewith equal amounts among the possible states of P and S waves. Insuch diffusive regime the P to S energy ratio equilibrates in an universal way independentof the particular details of the scattering. It has been demonstrated that averagingthe cross correlations at any two points of an elastic medium subjected to diffuse elasticwavefields leads to the emergence of the Green function, which is the wave fieldthat would be observed at one position if an impulsive load is applied at the other. Inthis work we study the problem of the retrieval of the 2D tensor elastodynamic Greenfunction in an infinite elastic space containing a circular cylinder inclusion. We illuminateisotropically the elastic spacewith plane waves. We assume the spectra for both Pand S waves uniform but such that the energy ratio ES/EP=(a/b)2, which is the onepredicted by equipartition theory in two-dimensions. We then show that the fouriertransform of azimuthal average of the cross-correlation of motion between two pointswithin an elastic medium is proportional to the imaginary part of the exact Green tensorfunction between these points. The numerical results presented here point out thepossibility of detection and imaging of diffractors and resonant diffractors by crosscorrelation even in presence of attenuation exists.

AIM:To evaluate the potential use of colonoscopy and endoluminal ultrasonic biomicroscopy(eUBM)to track the progression of mouse colonic ***:Ten mice were treated with a single azoxy-methane intraperitoneal injection(week 1)followed by seven days of a dextran sulfate sodium treatment in their drinking water(week 2)to induce inflammationassociated colon *** was performed simultaneously with colonoscopy at weeks 13,17-20 and21.A 3.6-f diameter 40 MHz mini-probe catheter was used for eUBM *** ultrasound mini-probe catheter was inserted into the accessory channel of a pediatric flexible bronchofiberscope,allowing simultaneous acquisition of colonoscopic and eUBM *** image acquisition,the mice were anesthetized with isoflurane and kept in a supine position over a stainless steel heated surgical waterbed at 37℃.Both eUBM and colonoscopic images were captured and stored when a lesion was detected by colonoscopy or when the eUBM image revealed a modified colon wall *** the procedure,the colon was irrigated with water that was injected through a flush port on the mini-probe catheter and that acted as the ultrasound coupling medium between the transducer and the colon *** the acquisition of the last eUBM/colonoscopy section for each animal was completed,the colons were fixed,paraffin-embedded,and stained with hematoxylin and *** images acquired at the first time-point for each mouse were compared with subsequent eUBM/colonoscopic images of the same sites obtained in the following acquisitions to evaluate lesion ***:All 10 mice had eUBM and colonoscopic images acquired at week 13(the first time-point).Two animals died immediately after the first imaging acquisition and,consequently,only 8 mice were subjected to the second eUBM/colonoscopy imaging acquisition(at the second time-point).Due to the advanced stage of colonic tumorigenesis,5 animals died after the second time-point image acquisition,and t

The resolution of inflammation is an active process,guided by specialized proresolution lipid mediators(SPMs).These mediators originate from polyunsaturated fatty acids,such as *** evidence suggests that the beneficial effects attributed to omega-3 are,at least in part,the result of the immunomodulatory action of the SPMs,which act systemically by overcoming inflammation and repairing tissue damage,without suppressing the immune *** studies suggest that an imbalance in the synthesis and/or activity of these compounds may be associated with the pathogenesis of several inflammatory conditions,such as inflammatory bowel disease(IBD).Thus,this review highlights the advances made in recent years with regard to the endogenous synthesis and the biological role of lipoxins,resolvins,protectins,and maresins,as well as their precursors,in the regulation of inflammation;and provides an update on the participation of these mediators in the development and evolution of IBD and the therapeutic approaches that these immunomodulating substances are involved in this context.

Development and Parallelization of an Improved 2D Moving Window Standard Deviation Python Routine for Image Segmentation Purposes

Two additional features are particularly useful in pixelwise satellite data segmentation using neural networks: one results from local window averaging around each pixel (MWA) and another uses a standard deviation estimator (MWSD) instead of the average. While the former’s complexity has already been solved to a satisfying minimum, the latter did not. This article proposes a new algorithm that can substitute a naive MWSD, by making the complexity of the computational process fall from O(N2n2) to O(N2n), where N is a square input array side, and n is the moving window’s side length.
