Effect of baffles on performance of fluid catalytic cracking riser

Increasing demand of automobile fuel and a need to process heavier crude oil makes it imperative to find improvements to the design of existing fluid catalytic cracking （FCC） units. Several modifications to the design of the riser section of FCC units have been suggested in previous studies including： improved feed nozzle designs, multiple nozzle configurations, internal baffles, and novel two-stage-riser systems. In this study, we investigate the effects of baffles on the performance of FCC risers using computational fluid dynamics simulations. In this study, predictions from a basis model （without baffles） are compared with those from four different configurations including：（i） 5-cm baffles at 5-m spacing, （ii） 7.5-cm baffles at 5- m spacing, （iii） 10-cm baffles with 5-m spacing, （iv） lO-cm baffles at 2.5-m spacing, and （v） lO-cm baffles at 1-m spacing. The baffles force the catalyst away from wails toward the center of the riser, enhancing the radial dispersion of the catalyst and the heat transfer inside the riser. The use of longer baffles and smaller spacings further increases the dispersion, yielding more homogeneous radial profiles. The changes in the radial dispersion result in variations in the conversion, yields, and pressure drops. The baffles increase conversion of vacuum gas oil （VGO） and the yield of gasoline. However, the simulations showed that longer baffles and a larger number of baffles did not always give a higher yield or higher conversion. Among the simulated configurations, the 5-cm baffles at 5-m spacing gave the highest conversion of VGO, whereas the 10-cm baffles at 1 -m spacing resulted in the highest yield of the gasoline. Thus, rational optimization of baffle configurations is required to achieve optimal performance.

Nanostructured graphene films were used as platforms for the differentiation of Saos-2 cells into bonelike cells. The films were grown using the plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition method, which allowed the production of both vertically and horizontally aligned carbon nanowalls(CNWs). modifications of the techniqueallowed control of the density of the CNWs and their orientation after the transfer process. The influence of two different topographies on cell attachment, proliferation,and differentiation was investigated. First, the transferred graphene surfaces were shown to be noncytotoxic and were able to support cell adhesion and growth for over 7 ***, early cell differentiation(identified by cellular alkaline phosphatase release) was found to be enhanced on the horizontally aligned CNW surfaces, whereas mineralization(identified by cellular calcium production), a later stage of bone cell differentiation, was stimulated by the presence of the vertical CNWs on the surfaces. These results show that the graphene coatings, grown using the presented method, are biocompatible. And their topographies have an impact on cell behavior, which can be useful in tissue engineering applications.

Fire blight QTL analysis in a multi-family apple population identifies a reduced-susceptibility allele in ‘Honeycrisp’

Breeding apple cultivars with resistance offers a potential solution to fire blight,a damaging bacterial disease caused by Erwinia *** resistance alleles at quantitative trait loci(QTLs)were previously characterized in diverse malus germplasm with poor fruit quality,which reduces breeding *** study utilized a pedigree-based QTL analysis approach to elucidate the genetic basis of resistance/susceptibility to fire blight from multiple genetic sources in germplasm relevant to *** breeding ***-seven important breeding parents(IBPs)were represented by 314 offspring from 32 full-sib families,with‘Honeycrisp’being the most highly represented *** resistance/susceptibility data from a two-year replicated field inoculation study and previously curated genome-wide single nucleotide polymorphism data,QTLs were consistently mapped on chromosomes(Chrs.)6,7,and *** QTLs together explained~28% of phenotypic *** Chr.6 and Chr.15 QTLs colocalized with previously reported QTLs,while the Chr.7 QTL is possibly novel.‘Honeycrisp’inherited a rare reduced-susceptibility allele at the Chr.6 QTL from its grandparent‘Frostbite’.The highly resistant IBP‘Enterprise’had at least one putative reduced-susceptibility allele at all three *** general,lower susceptibility was observed for individuals with higher numbers of reduced-susceptibility alleles across *** study highlighted QTL mapping and allele characterization of resistance/susceptibility to fire blight in complex pedigree-connected apple breeding *** gained will enable more informed parental selection and development of trait-predictive DNA tests for pyramiding favorable alleles and selection of superior apple cultivars with resistance to fire blight.

Brugada phenocopies(BrP) are clinical entities that are etiologically distinct from true congenital Brugada syndrome. BrP are characterized by type 1 or type 2 Brugada electrocardiogram(ECG) patterns in precordial leads V1-V3. However, BrP are elicited by various un-derlying clinical conditions such as myocardial ischemia, pulmonary embolism, electrolyte abnormalities, or poor ECG filters. Upon resolution of the inciting underlying pathological condition, the BrP ECG subsequently nor-malizes. To date, reports have documented BrP in the context of singular clinical events. more recently, recur-rent BrP has been demonstrated in the context of re-current hypokalemia. This demonstrates clinical repro-ducibility, thereby advancing the concept of this new ECG phenomenon. The key to further understanding the pathophysiological mechanisms behind BrP requires experimental model validation in which these phenom-ena are reproduced under strictly controlled environ-mental conditions. The development of these validation models will help us determine whether BrP are tran-sient alterations of sodium channels that are not repro-ducible with a sodium channel provocative test or al-ternatively, a malfunction of other ion channels. In this editorial, we discuss the conceptual emergence of BrP as a new ECG phenomenon, review the progress made to date and identify opportunities for further investiga-tion. In addition, we also encourage investigators that are currently reporting on these cases to use the term BrP in order to facilitate literature searches and to help establish this emerging concept.

Combined Generalized Hubbert-Bass model Approach to Include Disruptions When Predicting Future Oil Production

In a previous study [1] the authors had developed a methodology for predicting global oil production. Briefly, the model accounted for disruptions in production by utilising a series of Hubbert curves in combination with a polynomial smoothing function. Whilst the model was able to produce predictions for future oil production, the methodology was complex in its implementation and not easily applied to future disruptions. In this study a Generalized Bass model approach is incorporated with the Hubbert linearization technique that overcomes these limitations and is consistent with our previous predictions.

Since the 1970s,electronic fetal monitoring(EFm)also known as cardiotocography(CTG)has been used extensively in labor around the world,despite its known failure to help prevent many babies from developing neonatal encephalopathy and cerebral *** of EFm’s poor performance with respect to these outcomes arises from a fundamental misunderstanding of the differences between screening and diagnostic tests,subjective classifications of fetal heart rate(FHR)patterns that lead to large inter-observer variability in its interpretation,failure to appreciate early stages of fetal compromise,and poor statistical modeling for its use as a screening *** have developed a new approach to the practice and interpretation of EFm called the fetal reserve index(FRI)which does the following:(1)breaking FHR components down into 4 components,(heart rate,variability,accelerations,and decelerations);(2)contextualizing the metrics by adding increased uterine activity;(3)adding specific maternal,fetal,and obstetric risk *** result is an eight-point scoring metric that,when directly compared with current American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists EFm categories,even in version 1.0 with equal weighting of variables,shows that the FRI has performed much better for identifying cases at risk before damage had occurred,reducing the need for emergency deliveries,and lowering overall Cesarean delivery *** increased data,we expect further refinements in the specifics of scoring that will allow even earlier detection of compromise in labor.
