Divergence and constraint in the thermal sensitivity of aquatic insect swimming performance

Environmental temperature variation may play a significant role in the adaptive evolutionary divergence of ectotherm thermal performance curves(TPCs).However,divergence in TPCs may also be constrained due to various ***,we measured TPCs for swimming velocity of temperate and tropical mayflies(Family:Baetidae)and their stonefly predators(Family:Perlidae)from different *** predicted that differences in seasonal climatic regimes would drive divergence in TPCs between temperate and tropical *** tropical temperatures should favor the evolution of"specialists"that perform well across a narrow range of ***,variable temperatures in temperate zones,however,should favor"generalists"that perform well across a broad range of *** phylogenetically paired comparisons of mayflies and stoneflies,swimming speed was generally unaffected by experimental temperature and did not differ among populations between latitudes,suggesting a maintenance of performance breadth across elevation and *** exception was found between temperate and tropical mayflies at low elevation where climatic differences between latitudes are *** addition,TPCs did not differ between mayflies and their stonefly predators,except at tropical low *** results indicate that divergence in TPCs may be con strai ned in aquatic in sects except under the most differe nt ther・mal regimes,perhaps because of trade-offs that reduce thermal sensitivity and increase performance breadth.

Background:Platinum chemotherapy (CT) remains the backbone of systemic therapy for patients with small-cell lung cancer (sCLC). The nucleotide excision repair (NER) pathway plays a central role in the repair of the DNA damage exerted by platinum agents. Alteration in this repair mechanism may affect patients' survival.materials and methods:We conducted a retrospective analysis of data from 38 patients with extensive disease (ED)-sCLC who underwent platinum-CT at the Clinical Oncology Unit, Careggi University Hospital, Florence (Italy), from 2015 to 2020. mRNA expression analysis and single nucleotide polymorphism (sNP) characterization of three NER pathway genes-namely , , and -were performed on patient tumor samples.Results:Overall, elevated expression of genes was observed in sCLC patients compared to healthy controls. Patients with low and expression levels exhibited a better median progression-free survival (mPFs = 7.1 . 4.9 months, = 0.39 for and mPFs = 6.9 . 4.8 months, = 0.093 for ) and overall survival (mOs = 8.7 . 6.0 months, = 0.4 for and mOs = 7.2 . 6.2 months, = 0.13 for ). Genotyping analysis of five sNPs of genes showed a longer survival in patients harboring the wild-type genotype or the heterozygous variant of the rs11615 sNP ( = 0.24 for PFs and = 0.14 for Os) and of the rs13181 and rs1799793 sNPs ( = 0.43 and = 0.26 for PFs and = 0.21 and = 0.16 for Os, respectively) compared to patients with homozygous mutant genotypes.Conclusions:The comprehensive analysis of gene expression and sNP variants appears to identify patients who derive greater survival benefits from platinum-CT.

Near-infraredfluorescence(NIRF)imaging involves the separation of weakfluorescence signals from backscattered excitation *** measurement sensitivity of current NIRF imaging systems is limited by the excitation light leakage through *** this contribution,the authors demonstrate that the excitation light leakage can be suppressed upon using appropriatefilter combination and *** excitation light leakage and measurement sensitivity were assessed and compared in this study by computing the transmission ratios of excitation to emission light collected and the signal-to-noise ratios in well-controlled phantom studies with differentfilter combinations and *** appropriatefilter combinations and permutations,we observe as much as two orders of magnitude reduction in the transmission ratio and higher signal-to-noise ratio.

Gromov Hyperbolicity of Riemann surfaces

We study the hyperbolicity in the Gromov sense of Riemann surfaces. We deduce the hyperbolicity of a surface from the hyperbolicity of its ＂building block components＂. We also prove the equivalence between the hyperbolicity of a Riemann surface and the hyperbolicity of some graph associated with it. These results clarify how the decomposition of a Riemann surface into Y-pieces and funnels affects the hyperbolicity of the surface. The results simplify the topology of the surface and allow us to obtain global results from local information.

microelectromechanical systems(mEms)gyroscopes are widely used,e.g.,in modern automotive and consumer applications,and require signal stability and accuracy in rather harsh environmental *** many use cases,device reliability must be guaranteed under large external loads at high *** sensitivity of the sensor to such external loads depends strongly on the damping,or rather quality factor,of the high-frequency mechanical modes of the *** this paper,we investigate the influence of thermoelastic damping on several high-frequency modes by comparing finite element simulations with measurements of the quality factor in an application-relevant temperature *** measure the quality factors over different temperatures in vacuum,to extract the relevant thermoelastic material parameters of the polycrystalline mEms *** simulation results show a good agreement with the measured quantities,therefore proving the applicability of our method for predictive purposes in the mEms design ***,we are able to uniquely identify the thermoelastic effects and show their significance for the damping of the high-frequency modes of an industrial mEms *** approach is generic and therefore easily applicable to any mechanical structure with many possible applications in nano-and micromechanical systems.

Food preference of the rove beetle, Atheta coriaria Kraatz （Coleoptera： staphylinidae） under laboratory conditions

A study, involving laboratory choice tests, was conducted to determine the feeding behavior, based on food preference, of the adult and larval stage of the rove beetle, Atheta coriaria Kraatz when presented with both fresh moistened oatmeal and second instar fungus gnat, Bradysia sp. nr. coprophila （Lintner） larvae in Petri dishes. Rove beetles used in this study came from a laboratory-reared colony. A rating scale from 1 to 5, based on percent missing （1 = 0 to 10%, 2 = 11 to 30%, 3 = 31 to 50%, 4 = 51 to 75%, and 5 = 76 to 100%）, was used to objectively assess the amount of oatmeal and number of fungus gnat larvae consumed by each rove beetle adult and larva. In all the choice tests, A. coriaria adults and larvae preferred to feed on fungus gnat larvae （78% and 69%, respectively） significantly more so than oatmeal （9% and 5%, respectively） based on the amount of oatmeal and number of fungus gnat larvae consumed after 4 and 6 hours. There were relatively minimal differences in the amount of food consumed for both adults and larvae after 4 and 6 hours. The results of this study indicate that oatmeal may be an inexpensive supplemental food source, during the rearing process, which will not inhibit the effectiveness of rove beetles to control fungus gnat larvae when released into greenhouses.
