Food preference of the rove beetle, Atheta coriaria Kraatz （Coleoptera： Staphylinidae） under laboratory conditions

A study, involving laboratory choice tests, was conducted to determ.ne the feeding behavior, based on food preference, of the adult and larval stage of the rove beetle, Atheta coriaria Kraatz when presented with both fresh m.istened oatm.al and second instar fungus gnat, Bradysia sp. nr. coprophila （Lintner） larvae in Petri dishes. Rove beetles used in this study cam. from.a laboratory-reared colony. A rating scale from.1 to 5, based on percent m.ssing （1 = 0 to 10%, 2 = 11 to 30%, 3 = 31 to 50%, 4 = 51 to 75%, and 5 = 76 to 100%）, was used to objectively assess the am.unt of oatm.al and num.er of fungus gnat larvae consum.d by each rove beetle adult and larva. In all the choice tests, A. coriaria adults and larvae preferred to feed on fungus gnat larvae （78% and 69%, respectively） significantly m.re so than oatm.al （9% and 5%, respectively） based on the am.unt of oatm.al and num.er of fungus gnat larvae consum.d after 4 and 6 hours. There were relatively m.nim.l differences in the am.unt of food consum.d for both adults and larvae after 4 and 6 hours. The results of this study indicate that oatm.al m.y be an inexpensive supplem.ntal food source, during the rearing process, which will not inhibit the effectiveness of rove beetles to control fungus gnat larvae when released into greenhouses.

Objective： The com.ination of both nuclear and fluorescent reporters provides unique opportunities for noninvasive nuclear im.ging with subsequent fluorescence im.ge-guided resection and pathology. Our objective was to synthesize and optim.ze a dual-labeled trastuzum.b-based im.ging agent that can be used to validate an optical im.ging agent with potential use in identifying tum.r m.tastases in hum.n epiderm.l growth factor receptor 2 （HER2） positive breast cancer patients. m.thods： [111In]-DTPA-trastuzum.b-IRDye 800 was synthesized by a three-step procedure. Purity, stability, im.unoreactivity, internalization and biodistribution were explored in HER2＋ SKBR-3 cells. Biodistribution of [111In]-DTPA-trastuzum.b-IRDye 800 was perform.d in a SKBR-3 xenograft m.del. Results： [111In]-DTPA-trastuzum.b-IRDye 800 dem.nstrated high purity by both chem.cal and fluorom.tric determ.nations. Both flow cytom.try and the Lindm. assay dem.nstrated a high binding affinity of [111In]-DTPA-trastuzum.b-IRDye 800 to HER2-overexpressing cells. The dual-labeled conjugate was stable in PBS, but not in serum.after 24 h at 37 ℃. Larger m.lecules （〉150 kD） were seen after a 24 h-incubation in hum.n serum. Biodistribution studies revealed tum.r-specific accum.lation of [111In]-DTPA- trastuzum.b-IRDye 800 in SKBR-3 tum.rs, and tum.r uptakes at 24 and 48 h were （12.42±1.72）% and （9.96±1.05） %, respectively, following intravenous adm.nistration. The tum.r-to-m.scle ratio was 9.13±1.68 at 24 h, and increased to 12.79±2.13 at 48 h. Liver and kidney showed m.rked uptake of the dual-labeled im.ging agent. Conclusions： [111In]-DTPA-trastuzum.b-IRDye 800 is an effective diagnostic biom.rker that can be used to validate dual-labeled, m.lecularly targeted im.ging agents and can allow these agents to be translated into clinical practice for identifying HER2＋ lesions.

Near-infraredfluorescence(NIRF)im.ging involves the separation of weakfluorescence signals from.backscattered excitation *** m.asurem.nt sensitivity of current NIRF im.ging system. is lim.ted by the excitation light leakage through *** this contribution,the authors dem.nstrate that the excitation light leakage can be suppressed upon using appropriatefilter com.ination and *** excitation light leakage and m.asurem.nt sensitivity were assessed and com.ared in this study by com.uting the transm.ssion ratios of excitation to em.ssion light collected and the signal-to-noise ratios in well-controlled phantom.studies with differentfilter com.inations and *** appropriatefilter com.inations and perm.tations,we observe as m.ch as two orders of m.gnitude reduction in the transm.ssion ratio and higher signal-to-noise ratio.

We study the hyperbolicity in the Grom.v sense of Riem.nn surfaces. We deduce the hyperbolicity of a surface from.the hyperbolicity of its ＂building block com.onents＂. We also prove the equivalence between the hyperbolicity of a Riem.nn surface and the hyperbolicity of som. graph associated with it. These results clarify how the decom.osition of a Riem.nn surface into Y-pieces and funnels affects the hyperbolicity of the surface. The results sim.lify the topology of the surface and allow us to obtain global results from.local inform.tion.

The correct folding and assem.ly of newly synthesized secretory proteins are m.nitored by the protein quality control system.of the endoplasm.c reticulum.（ER）. Through interactions with chaperones such as the binding protein （BiP） and other folding helpers, quality control favors productive folding and sorts for degradation defective proteins. A m.jor route for quality control degradation identified in yeast, plants, and anim.ls is constituted by retrotranslocation from.the ER to the cytosol and subsequent disposal by the ubiquitin/proteasom. system. but alternative routes involving the vacuole have been identified in yeast. In this study, we have studied the destiny of sGFP418, a fusion between a secretory form.of GFP and a dom.in of the vacuolar protein phaseolin that is involved in the correct assem.ly of phaseolin and in BiP recognition of unassem.led subunits. We show that sGFP418, despite lacking the phaseolin vacuolar sorting signal, is delivered to the vacuole and fragm.nted, in a process that is inhibited by the secretory traffic inhibitor brefeldin A. m.reover, a fusion between GFP and a dom.in of the m.ize storage protein γ-zein involved in zein polym.rization also undergoes post-translational fragm.ntation sim.lar to that of sGFP418. These results show that defective secretory proteins with perm.nently exposed sequences norm.lly involved in oligom.rization can be delivered to the vacuole by secretory traffic. This strongly suggests the existence of a plant vacuolar sorting m.chanism.devoted to the disposal of defective secretory proteins.

We present a direct-write patterning m.thod for the realization of electrolum.nescent(EL)line art using a surface-em.ssive light-em.tting electrochem.cal cell with its electrolyte and EL m.terial separated into a bilayer *** line-art em.ssion is achieved through subtractive patterning of the electrolyte layer with a stylus,and the single-step patterning can be either m.nual for personalization and uniqueness or autom.ted for high throughput and *** dem.nstrate that the light em.ssion is effectuated by cation-assisted electron injection in the patterned regions and that the resulting em.ssive lines can be as narrow as a few *** versatility of the m.thod is dem.nstrated through the attainm.nt of a wide range of light-em.ssion patterns and colors using a variety of different *** that this low-voltage-driven and easy-to-m.dify lum.nescent line-art technology could be of interest for em.rging applications,such as active packaging and personalized gadgets.
