Nucleic acid sensing is a 3 decades old but still challenging area of application for different biological sub-domains,from pathogen detection to single cell transcriptomics *** many applications of nucleic acid detection and identification are mostly carried out by PCR techniques,sequencing,and their derivatives used at large ***,these methods’limitations on speed,cost,complexity and specificity have motivated the development of innovative detection methods among which nucleic acid biosensing technologies seem *** switches are a particular class of RNA sensing devices relying on a conformational switch of secondary structure induced by the pairing of the detected trigger RNA with a de novo designed synthetic sensing mRNA *** we describe a streamlined methodology enabling the development of such a sensor for the RNA-mediated detection of an endangered plant species in a cell-free reaction *** applied this methodology to help identify the rosewood Dalbergia maritima,a highly trafficked wood,whose protection is limited by the capacity of the authorities to distinguish protected logs from other unprotected but related *** streamlined pipeline presented in this work is a versatile framework enabling cheap and rapid development of new sensors for custom RNA detection.

Penetrating abdominal trauma is the main cause of pancreatic lesions and delay in diagnosis or treatment can increase morbimortality. We present a case of acute necrohemorrhagic pancreatitis (ANHP) secondary to airgun injury associated with pulmonary embolism caused by the projectile in a 36 year old man. He underwent urgent surgery, appreciating pancreatic contusion but not visualizing the projectile, located by CT scan 3mm from the inferior vena cava. The patient underwent further surgery 48 hours later for necrosectomy and the insertion of an irrigation tube, due to ANHP after the migration of the projectile into the lung. This case underlines the clinical relevance of pancreatic lesion in patients with a penetrating abdominal trauma, the diagnostic difficulty and the surgical strategy, as well as the repercussions of the migration of a foreign body through the blood stream, crossing the right heart chambers and becoming lodged in the lung.

Pygeum africanum （Tadenan） is a popular phytotherapeutic agent used in the treatment of symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia. The active compounds of the drug have not been identified, and determining the plasma concentration of the drug is, therefore, not possible. Because there are conflicting results on the efficacy of this drug, we aimed to investigate its effect on prostate cell growth in vitro using human serum collected before and after Pygeum africanum intake. We used primary and organotypic cultures of human prostatic stromal myofibroblast cell line WPMY and prostatic epithelial cell line PNT2. We also used fresh benign prostatic tissue. The serum of a treated man induced decreases in the proliferation of primary cells, organotypic cells and WPMY cells but not PNT2 cells. We also analysed the effect of treated serum on the gene expression profile of WPMY cells. The transcriptome analysis revealed an upregulation of genes involved in multiple tumour suppression pathways and a downregulation of genes involved in inflammation and oxidative-stress pathways. The oral intake of Pygeum africanum resulted in serum levels of active substances that were sufficient to inhibit the proliferation of cultured myofibroblasts prostatic cells. An essential oil is the volatile lipophilic component extracted from plants. Microencapsulation systems protect the essential oil from degradation and evaporation, and, at the same time, allow a sustained release. This work analyses and characterizes the oregano and sage essential oil microcapsules prepared by interfacial polymerization technique, using polyurea as wall material. Several instrumental techniques are used: optical microscopy, size particle, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Termo gravimetric analysis (TGA), spectrophotometry, antimicrobial test and chromatography. Results show that oregano and sage oil have antimicrobial properties, and their microencapsulation allows knowing that these properties remain inside the microcapsules.

Alternative protein sources, such as insects or algae meals are in special focus of animal nutrition in order to replace soybean meal (SBM). As part of the multidisciplinary project “sustainability transitions” this study evaluated effects of replacing SBM by partly defatted larvae meal from the black soldier fly, Hermetia illucens or meal from the micro algae Spirulina platensis in broiler diets. The aim of the current study was to investigate the chickens’ growth performance and the intestinal morphology as well as the health status. 288 one-day-old male growing chickens (Ross 308) from a commercial hatchery were randomly allotted to 48 pens (6 birds per pen) for the growth study with five diets and feed supply on free choice level. The control diet was based on wheat, corn and SBM. The experimental diets replaced 50% of SBM by the alternative proteins under study, both on a basic level of amino acid (AA) supplementation (Lys and Met added equal to the control diet) (diet HM and SM) and an extended level of AA fortification (Lys, Met, Thr, Arg, val added) (diet HM+ and SM+). Response of chickens was evaluated by zoo-technical parameters, which were under weekly control (e.g. growth, feed intake, feed conversion ratio, mortality). After finishing the growth study birds from control and the experimental diets at the basic level of AA supplementation were slaughtered after 12 hour fastening and utilized for gut morphometric analysis and histological evaluation of the health status. Diets at a basic level of AA fortification led to significant depression of growth, feed intake, feed conversion ratio, and protein conversion ratio, respectively. In addition, the acceptance of the Spirulina diet was lower (p ≤ 0.001) as compared to the Hermetia based diet. However, the extended level of AA supplementation improved all parameters significantly. Macrozoospermia,characterized by the presence of largeheaded spermatozoa usually carrying several flagella,is one of the most severe phenotypes of male *** in most cases,the gametes are chromosomally abnormal and cannot be used for assisted reproductive technologies(ART)(Ray et al.,2017).In 2007,subjects from consanguineous families were shown to carry the same homozygous deleterious AURKC variant(NM_001015878.2:c.144delC,later renamed c.145delC,***49TrpfsTer23),establishing AURKC as the first and main gene associated with macrozoospermia(Dieterich et al.,2007).Using flow cytometry,all spermatozoa from patients homozygous for the c.145delC variant were shown to be tetraploid,highlighting a cytokinesis blockage of the first meiotic divisions thus confirming that ART cannot be successful for these patients(Dieterich et al.,2009).

Background: The purpose of this study was to investigate the frequency of asym ptomatic left ventricular dysfunction in patients with pseudoexfoliation syndrom e. Methods: Two-dimensional and pulsed Doppler echocardiography of transmitral flow was performed on 27 patients with pseudoexfoliation syndrome, aged 66.9±5. 6 years, and 24 healthy volunteers aged 63.9±6.5 years. Left ventricular (LV) s ystolic contraction and ejection were assessed by LV ejection fraction (EF) and fractional shortening (FS). LV diastolic filling parameters tested were: early f ast diastolic filling (E wave), late diastolic filling (A wave), ratio E/A, velo city time integral E wave (VTIE) and A wave (VTIA), their ratio (VTIE/VTIA), pre ssure at the end of filling (LVEDP)-and a pulmonary capillary wedge pressure (P CWP). Results: Systolic parameters EF and FS, diastolic filling parameters such as A, LVEDP and PCWP were not significantly different between patients with pseu doexfoliation syndrome and controls (P > 0.05). A significant difference (P < 0. 05) was found with regard to the diastolic filling parameters: E (61.6±15.1 vs 83.7±21.4), ratio E/A (0.8±0.1 vs 1.1±0.2), VTIE (8.6±1.8 vs 9.8±1.9), VTIA (10.3±2.4 vs 7.8±1.6)-and ratio VTIA/VTIE (1.2±0.2 vs 0.8±0.2). Conclusion : Our study suggests the possibility of an association between patientswith pseu doexfoliation syndrome and a discrete asymptomatic myocardial diastolic dysfunct ion.
