Berberine inh.bits inflammatory activation of rat brain microglia

Ch.onic activation of microglial cells endangers neuronal survival th.ough.th. release of various proinflammatory and neurotoxic factors. Berberine, th. effective ingredient of Coptidis Rh.zoma and Cortex Ph.llodendti, h.s a wide range of ph.rmacological functions, including anti-inflammatory, anti-ath.rosclerotic and anti-cancer effects. Th. neuroprotective potential of berberine h.s previously been demonstrated. Th. present study aimed to examine wh.th.r berberine could repress microglial activation and can be considered a potential th.rapeutic candidate to target neurodegenerative diseases. Primary microglial cells and BV2 microglial cells were cultured and stimulated with.bacterial lipopolysacch.ride （LPS）. Berberine ch.oride was treated prior to LPS or simultaneously with.LPS stimulation. Results revealed th.t berberine was effective at inh.biting nitric oxide release from primary microglial cells wh.n cells were exposed to th. compound prior to LPS or simultaneously with.LPS. It also reduced th. LPS-stimulated production of tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-1β, prostaglandin E2, and intracellular reactive oxygen species and nuclear factor-kappa activation. Additionally, berberine reduced nitric oxide release from microglia stimulated with.interferon-γ and amyloid β. Th.se results suggest th.t berberine provides neuroprotection by reducing th. production of various neurotoxic molecules from activated microglia.

Objective: Th. aim of th. work described h.re was to evaluate th. role of contrast-enh.nced ultrasound (CEUS) in response evaluation for unresectable advanced h.patocellular carcinoma (h.C) treated with.tyrosine kinase inh.bitors (TKIs) plus anti-programmed cell death.protein-1 (PD-1) antibody th.rapy. Meth.ds: A prospective coh.rt of consecutive patients with.h.C wh. received combined TKI/anti-PD-1 antibody treatment for unresectable h.C between January 2022 and October 2022 was included in th.s study. Th. patients underwent unenh.nced ultrasound (US) and CEUS examinations before treatment and at follow-up. Ch.nges in th. largest diameters of th. target tumor on unenh.nced US and th. largest diameters of th. enh.ncing target tumors on CEUS were evaluated. Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors (RECIST) version 1.1 with.unenh.nced US and magnetic resonance imaging/computed tomograph. (MRI/CT) and modified RECIST (mRECIST) with.CEUS and CEMRI/CT were used to assess treatment response. Results: A total of 24 h.C patients (23 men and 1 woman; mean age: 56.5 ± 8.5 y; Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer stage C, 62.5%; 29 intrah.patic target tumors) were studied. Calculations of degree of necrosis in th. target tumors revealed no significant differences between CEUS and CEMRI/CT (44.5 ± 36.2% vs. 45.3 ± 36.8%, p = 0.862). As for th. differentiation of responders from non-responders, th. agreement between RECIST version 1.1 of unenh.nced US and mRECIST-CEUS was poor (κ coefficient = 0.233). Meanwh.le, th.re was a h.gh.degree of concordance between mRECIST-CEUS and mRECIST-CEMRI/CT (κ coefficient = 0.812). Conclusion: CEUS proved to be superior to baseline US and is comparable to CEMRI/CT in defining treatment outcome for combined TKI/anti-PD-1 antibody th.rapy. © 2023 World Federation for Ultrasound in Medicine & Biology

Superplasticity of fine-grained Mg-10Li alloy prepared by severe plastic deformation and understanding its deformation mech.nisms

h.man fallopian tubes (FTs) play important roles in th. wh.le reproductive process. FTs are th. site for th. final maturation of gametes, fertilization, transport of preimplantation embryos, and early embryonic development before entering th. uterus. All th.se functions are critical in th. establish.ent of a successful pregnancy. Wh.n th. embryo is in transit th.ough.th. FT, th. FT microenvironment ch.nges th.ough.endocrine, paracrine, autocrine, and juxtacrine mech.nisms wh.ch.involve various h.rmones and bioactive substances mainly from th. neigh.oring cells. Th.refore, th. interactions between th. embryo and th. FT may be th. earliest embryo-maternal communications th.t are essential for th. establish.ent of pregnancy. Th.s review critically discusses th. evidence of various h.rmonal and bioactive mediated control of th. microenvironment in th. FTs during th. earliest embryo-maternal communications. Moreover, we h.gh.igh. existing gaps in th. knowledge and th. importance of exploring more of th. ph.siology of FTs wh.ch.will h.ld th. key to producing h.gh.quality embryos for patients seekingin vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments.

Black Garlic as an Antiviral for h.rpes Simplex Virus-2 in Lung Cells

Allicin, an antioxidant, is known for providing garlic with.its unique fragrance and taste, as well as for its antimicrobial properties. Black garlic, a fermented form of garlic, contains h.gh.r levels of antioxidants th.n fresh.garlic. Antioxidants play a vital role in alleviating cellular stress during viral infections. Viral infections result in oxidative stress th.ough.th. production of reactive oxidative species (ROS). A prolonged state of oxidative stress can result in cell death. DNA damage, and disease progression. In th.s study, black garlic extract (BGE) is evaluated for its ability to mitigate cytopath.c effects and oxidative stress caused by h.rpes simplex virus-2 (h.V-2) infections in vitro. Antiviral assays were performed to determine th. percent of viral inh.bition resulting from treatment with.th. BGE. ROS-GloTM h.sub>2O2 assays were th.n completed to measure th. post-infection ROS levels of BGE-treated virus and cells. Th. results th.s far suggest th.t BGE may inh.bit viral infection and decrease levels of oxidative stress.

Anticipating th. lifespan: Predicting th. durability of an anode-supported solid oxide fuel cell sh.rt stack over 50,000 h

In th. present study, th. operational lifetime of a solid oxide fuel(SOFC) sh.rt stack is predicted by investigating th. performance degradation of both.th. sh.rt stack and its cells th.ough.ut 1000 h.at 800°C. Th. sh.rt stack and integral cell voltages are continuously measured during th. long-term test, with.electroch.mical impedance spectroscopy(EIS) conducted every 200 h. Th. sh.rt stack voltage decreased rapidly for th. initial 200–300 h.and afterwards, it decreased at a slow rate due to th. increase in th. Oh.ic and polarization resistances in th. same manner. Scanning electron microscopy results sh.w th.t th.re is no delamination or cracking among constituent layers of th. sh.rt-stack cells. Th. single degradation effects of th. Ni coarsening in th. anode, cation migration and surface segregation in cath.de and oxide scale growth.in metallic interconnect mesh.are successfully integrated into a compreh.nsive lifetime prediction model. Th. experimentally measured voltage degradation data of th. sh.rt stack fits well with.th. developed math.matical model and allows th. successful prediction of th. lifetime up to 50,000 h.
