Background:Drought‐tolerant turfgrass cultivars are becoming more important each year as landscape irrigation practices are becoming more ***:In this study,we quantified the level of drought tolerance(DT)in perennial ryegrass and tall fescue genotypes across years under different mowing(MH)and fertility(Fl)rates.A total of 48 ryegrass and 38 tall fescue genotypes were planted in 2011 at NexGen,Albany,*** trial was divided into three subtrials:(i)DT;(ii)MH and DT;and(iii)Fl and ***:The results showed that there was significant genetic variance for most of the traits in both *** genotype×year interaction was predominantly simple,indicating small changes in genotype ranking for both *** MH improved DT in perennial ryegrass,whereas higher MH resulted in greater DT in tall *** both species,higher MH improved the population mean for turf *** Fl inputs led to higher turf quality for both species,but it did not affect the DT ***:Using a selection index,six genotypes for perennial ryegrass and four for tall fescue were selected.

Background: Coupling biomass models with nutrient concentrations can provide sound estimations of carbon and nutrient contents, enabling the improvement of carbon and nutrient balance in forest ecosystems. Although nutrient concentrations are often assumed to be constant for some species and specific tree components, at least in mature stands,the concentrations usually vary with age, site index and even with tree density. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the sources of variation in nutrient concentrations in biomass compartments usually removed during harvesting operations, covering a range of species and management conditions: semi-natural forest, conventional forest plantations and short rotation forestry(SRF). Five species(Betula pubescens, Quercus robur, Eucalyptus globulus, Eucalyptus nitens and Populus spp.) and 14 genotypes were considered. A total of 430 trees were sampled in 61 plots to obtain 6 biomass components:leaves, twigs, thin branches, thick branches, bark and wood. Aboveground leafless biomass was pooled together *** concentrations of C, N, K, P, Ca, Mg, S, Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn and B were measured and the total biomass of each sampled tree and plot were determined. The data were analysed using boosted regression trees and conventional ***: The main sources of variation in nutrient concentrations were biomass component > > genotype(species) ≈ age >tree diameter. The concentrations of Ca, Mg and K were most strongly affected by genotype and age. The concentrations of P, K, Ca, Mg, S and Cu in the wood component decreased with age, whereas C concentrations increased, with a trend to reach 50% in the older trees. In the SRF, interamerican poplar and P. trichocarpa genotypes were comparatively more efficient in terms of Ca and K nutrient assimilation index(NAI)(+65-85%) than eucalypts, mainly because leafless biomass can be removed. AIM： To evaluate the effect of double-balloon enteros- copy （DBE） on pancreas histology and levels of pancre- atic enzymes. METHODS： Conventional upper gastrointestinal endos- copy was performed on five control pigs. Oral DBE was performed with an EN-450T5 enteroscope on 20 pigs. Two experimental groups （10 pigs each） were defined according to DBE duration： 90 rain for Group 1 and 140 min for Group 2. During oral insertion, the balloons were not inflated in the descending part of the duodenum to avoid the minor duodenal papilla. Serum amy- lase, lipase and C-reactive protein （CRP） levels were monitored before the procedure and repeated every 30 min until the exploration was finished, as well as 24 h and 7 d after. After the procedure and for a total of 7 d, the pigs were observed twice a day for signs of de- creased activity, irritability, vomiting or anorexia. Gross and microscopic examination of the pancreas was per- formed on day 7. RESUlTS： All animals tolerated DBE without clini- cal manifestations of acute pancreatitis. Experimental groups had higher levels of enzymes than the control group at 24 h. Throughout the exploration, the amylase levels increased significantly above the baseline 24 h after DBE, although the increase was not statistically significant and did not reach 20% of the baseline. An increase in lipase and CRP was observed at 24 h after the procedure, although by day 7, all enzymatic lev- els had returned to baseline. No differences between Groups 1 and 2 were found for any enzyme and sam- pling site during and after the procedure. Similarly, no correlation between insertion depth and enzyme levels was observed. Direct in situ and post-removal inspec- tion of the pancreas did not show any evidence of fluid collection, abscesses or hemorrhage. Histological examination of the pancreas from Groups 1 and 2 re- vealed the existence of focal areas （0.14-0.26 mm2） of ischemic necrosis in 47.4% of the animals. This paper introduces decimated filter banks for the one-dimensional empirical mode decomposition （1D-EMD）. These filter banks can provide perfect reconstruction and allow for an arbitrary tree structure. Since the EMD is a data driven decomposition, it is a very useful analysis instrument for non-stationary and non-linear signals. However, the traditional 1D-EMD has the disadvantage of expanding the data. large data sets can be generated as the amount of data to be stored increases with every decomposition level. The 1D-EMD can be thought as having the structure of a single dyadic filter. However, a methodology to incorporate the decomposition into any arbitrary tree structure has not been reported yet in the literature. This paper shows how to extend the 1D-EMD into any arbitrary tree structure while maintaining the perfect reconstruction property. Furthermore, the technique allows for downsampling the decomposed signals. This paper, thus, presents a method to minimize the data-expansion drawback of the 1D-EMD by using decimation and merging the EMD coefficients. The proposed algorithm is applicable for any arbitrary tree structure including a full binary tree structure.

Parasites are globally widespread pathogenic organisms,which impose im portant selective forces upon their ***,in accordance with the A djustm ent to parasite pressure hypothesis,it is expected that defenses among hosts vary relative to the selective pressure imposed by *** to the latitudinal gradient in diversity,species richness and abundance of parasites peak near the *** uropygial gland is an im portant defensive exocrine gland against pathogens in *** of the uropygial gland has been proposed to vary among species of birds because of divergent selection by pathogens on their ***,we should expect that bird species from the tropics should have relatively larger uropygial glands for their body size than species from higher ***,this hypothesis has not yet been ***,we analyze the size of the uropygial gland of 1719 individual birds belonging to 36 bird species from 3 Neotropical(Peru)and 3 temperate areas(Spain).Relative uropygial gland volum e was 12.52%larger in bird species from the tropics than from temperate *** finding is consistent w ith the relative size of this defensive organ being driven by selective pressures imposed by *** also explored the potential role of this gland as a means of avoiding haemosporidian infection,showing that species with large uropygial glands for their body size tend to have lower mean prevalence of haemosporidian infection,regardless o f their geographical *** result provides additional support for the assum ption that secretions from the uropygial gland reduce the likelihood of becoming infected with haemosporidians.
