Evaluation of the cracking and aging susceptibility of asphalt mixtures using viscoelastic properties and master curve parameters

Aging can significantly affect the performance of asphalt mixtures, causing increase in stiffness, reduction in relaxation capability and increase in cracking susceptibility. It is also well known that fundamental viscoelastic properties are used for design and modelling of asphalt mixtures and pavement structures to addressing rutting, fatigue and thermal cracking concerns. The objective of this paper is to study how the viscoelastic properties of asphalt mixture change over time, and evaluate and identify the cracking and aging susceptibility of asphalt mixtures with different mix variables during material selection and mixture design. Ten mixtures are evaluated using different laboratory conditioning protocols to simulate a range of aging levels in the field. The complex modulus test is then conducted on the lab aged mixtures to measure the viscoelastic properties in order to construct the dynamic modulus and phase angle master curves. The mixture Glover-Rowe(G-Rm) parameter and the shape parameters of the dynamic modulus and phase angle master curves, including inflection point frequency(-β/γ), difference between the glassy modulus and the inflection point modulus(γ), peak value of phase angle(a) and the horizontal position(frequency) of the peak phase angle value(c), are determined and evaluated for the mixtures with different aging conditions and mix variables. The study indicates the ability of the G-Rmparameter and all the master curve shape parameters to capture the effect of different aging conditions on linear viscoelastic mixture properties, as well as the cracking and aging susceptibility of asphalt mixtures.

Microstructural Characteristics and Mechanical Properties of Low-Alloy, Medium-Carbon Steels After Multiple Tempering

The microstructure and mechanical properties of NiCrMov-and NiCrSi-alloyed medium-carbon steels were investigated after multiple tempering. After austenitising, the steels were hardened by oil quenching and subsequently double or triple tempered at temperatures from 250 to 500 °C. The samples were characterised using scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction, while the mechanical properties were evaluated by vickers hardness testing, v-notched Charpy impact testing and tensile testing. The results showed that the retained austenite was stable up to 400 °C and the applied multiple tempering below this temperature did not lead to a complete decomposition of retained austenite in both steels. It was also found that the microstructure, hardness and impact toughness varied mainly as a function of tempering temperature,regardless of the number of tempering stages. Moreover, the impact toughness of NiCrMov steel was rather similar after single/triple tempering at different temperatures, while NiCrSi steel exhibited tempered martensite embrittlement after single/double tempering at 400 °C. The observed difference was mainly attributed to the effect of precipitation behaviour due to the effect of alloying additions in the studied steels.

Changes in sleep parameters following biomimetic oral appliance therapy: A case report

BACKGROUND Mandibular advancement devices(MADs)are used to treat mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea(OSA),but there is a risk that the underlying condition can worsen in the ***,this case report is based on biomimetic oral appliance therapy as an alternative to MADs,which was found to be beneficial in the treatment of a case with severe *** SUMMARY An overnight sleep study was undertaken in a 50-year-old male with excessive daytime sleepiness that lead to a diagnosis of severe OSA as the apnea-hypopnea index(AHI)was found to be 32.8/*** the patient was unable to comply with continuous positive airway pressure therapy and declined surgical intervention,treatment with a MAD was *** 10 years later,another sleep study was performed with no MAD in the mouth,which revealed an AHI of 67.9/*** view of the deterioration in sleep quality,the patient sought alternative treatment and elected on biomimetic oral appliance therapy,using a mandibular repositioning nighttime appliance(mRNA appliance®,vivos Therapeutics,Inc.,United States).After 10 mo,another sleep study was performed with no device in the patient’s mouth,which revealed an AHI of 11.8/h,a mean oxygen saturation of 94%and a mean oxygen desaturation index of 5.3%while *** analysis of the pre-and post-treatment study models of the upper jaw showed localized size increases of 15%-17%in the premolar regions and 15%-23%in the molar *** In adults with severe OSA that are unable to accept continuous positive airway pressure or surgical treatment,biomimetic oral appliance therapy may be preferable over MADs since biomimetic oral appliance therapy may be able to prevent worsening of sleep parameters by remodeling the nasomaxillary ***-term follow up studies are required to verify these novel findings.

The constitutively-expressed cyclooxygenase 1（COX-1） and the inducible COX-2 are both involved in the conversion of arachidonic acid（AA） to prostaglandins（PGs）.However,the functional roles of COX-1 at the cellular level remain *** hypothesized that by comparing differential gene expression and eicosanoid metabolism in lung fibroblasts from wild-type（WT） mice and COX-2^（-/-） or COX-1^（-/-） mice may help address the functional roles of COX-1 in inflammation and other cellular *** to WT,the number of specifically-induced transcripts were altered descendingly as follows：COX-2^（-/-）〉 COX-1^（-/-）〉 WT ＋ IL-1β.COX-1^（-/-） or COX-2^（-/-） cells shared about 50%of the induced transcripts with WT cells treated with IL-1β,*** interactive ＂anti-inflammatory,proinflammatory,and redox-activated＂ signature in the protein-protein interactome map was observed in COX-2^（-/-） *** augmented COX-1mRNA（in COX-2^（-/-） cells） was associated with the upregulation of mRNAs for glutathione S-transferase（GST）,superoxide dismutase（SOD）,NAD（P）H dehydrogenase quinone 1（NQO1）,aryl hydrocarbon receptor（AhR）,peroxiredoxin,phospholipase,prostacyclin synthase,and prostaglandin E synthase,resulting in a significant increase in the levels of PGE2,PGD2,leukotriene B4（LTB4）,PGF（1α）,thromboxane B2（TXB2）,and PGF（2α）.The COX-1 plays a dominant role in shifting AA toward the LTB4 pathway and anti-inflammatory *** to WT,the upregulated COX-1 mRNA in COX-2^（-/-） cells generated an ＂eicosanoid storm＂.The genomic characteristics of COX-2^（-/-） is similar to that of proinflammatory cells as observed in IL-1β induced WT ***-1^（-/-） and COX-2^（-/-） cells exhibited compensation of various eicosanoids at the genomic and metabolic levels.

The catalytic proficiency of three MONs for AP thermal decomposition was studied in this work.A chemical co-precipitation method was used for synthesis of MONs(CuZnO,CoZnO,and NiZnO)and their characterization carried out by utilizing XRD,FTIR,and *** TGA/DSC technique was employed for the investigation of the catalytic proficiency of MONs on the *** DSC data were used for measuring activation energy of catalyzed AP by using Ozawa,Kissinger,and Starink *** MONs were much sensitive for AP decomposition,and the performance of AP decomposition was further *** all the MONs,the CuZnO exhibits higher catalytic action than others and decomposition temperature of AP is descending around 117℃ by *** reduction in the activation energy was noticed after the incorporation of MONs in AP.

Proteomic Analysis Shows Constitutive Secretion of MIF and p53-associated Activity of COX-2-/-Lung Fibroblasts

The differential expression of two closelyassociated cyclooxygenase isozymes, COX-1 and COX-2, exhibited functions beyond eicosanoid metabolism. We hypothesized that COX-1 or COX-2 knockout lung fibroblasts may display altered protein profiles which may allow us to further differentiate the functional roles of these isozymes at the molecular level. Proteomic analysis shows constitutive production of macrophage migration inhibitory factor （MIF） in lung fibroblasts derived from COX-2 / but not wild-type （WT） or COX-1-/- mice. MIF was spontaneously released in high levels into the extracellular milieu of COX2 /- fibroblasts seemingly from the pre- formed intracellular stores, with no change in the basal gene expression of MIF. The secretion and regulation of MIF in COX-2-/- was ＂prostaglandin-independent.＂ GO analysis showed that concurrent with upregulation of MIF, there is a significant surge in expression of genes related to fibroblast growth, FK506 binding proteins, and isomerase activity in COX-2 ! cells. Furthermore, COX-2-/- fibroblasts also exhibit a significant increase in transcriptional activity of various regu- lators, antagonists, and co-modulators of p53, as well as in the expression of oncogenes and related transcripts. Integrative Oncogenomics Cancer Browser （IntroGen） analysis shows downregulation of COX-2 and amplification of MIF and/or p53 activity during development of glioblastomas, ependymoma, and colon adenomas. These data indicate the functional role of the MIF-COX- p53 axis in inflammation and cancer at the genomic and proteomie levels in COX-2-ablated cells. This systematic analysis not only shows the proinflammatory state but also unveils a molecular signature of a pro-oncogenic state of COX-1 in COX-2 ablated cells.

Congenital peritoneal encapsulation: A review and novel classification system

Congenital peritoneal encapsulation(CPE) is a very rare, congenital condition characterised by the presence of an accessory peritoneal membrane which encases a variable extent of the small bowel. It is unclear how CPE develops,however it is currently understood to be a result of an aberrant adhesion in the peritoneal lining of the physiological hernia in foetal mid-gut development. The condition was first described in 1868, and subsequently there have been only 45 case reports of the phenomenon. No formal, systematised review of CPE has yet been performed, meaning the condition remains poorly understood,underdiagnosed and mismanaged. Diagnosis of CPE remains clinical with important adjuncts provided by imaging and diagnostic laparoscopy. Two thirds of patients present with abdominal pain, likely secondary to sub-acute bowel obstruction. A fixed, asymmetrical distension of the abdomen and differential consistency on abdominal palpation are more specific clinical features present in approximately 10% of cases. CPE is virtually undetectable on plain imaging, and is only detected on 40% of patients with computed tomography scan. Most patients will undergo diagnostic laparotomy to confirm the *** of CPE includes both medical management of the critically-unstable patient and surgical laparotomy, partial peritonectomy and *** following prompt surgical treatment is excellent, with a majority of patients being symptom free at follow up. This review summarises the current literature on the aetiology, diagnosis and treatment of this rare disease. We also introduce a novel classification system for encapsulating bowel diseases, which may distinguish CPE from the commoner, more morbid conditions of abdominal cocoon and encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis.

We report a case of intravenous(Iv) amiodarone drug induced liver injury(DILI).The patient received Iv N-acetylcysteine(NAC) which resulted in a rapid improvement in liver *** the specific mechanisms for the pathogenesis of Iv amiodaroneDILI and the therapeutic action of Iv NAC are both unknown, this case strongly implies at least some *** Iv amiodarone is indicated for the treatment of serious cardiac arrhythmias in an intensive care unit setting, some degree of ischemic hepatitis is likely a cofactor in most cases.

On a Unification of Generalized Mittag-Leffler Function and Family of Bessel Functions

In the present work, a unification of certain functions of mathematical physics is proposed and its properties are studied. The proposed function unifies Lommel function, Struve function, the Bessel-Maitland function and its generalization, Dotsenko function, generalized Mittag-Leffler function etc. The properties include absolute and uniform convergence, differential recurrence relation, integral representations in the form of Euler-Beta transform, Mellin-Barnes transform, Laplace transform and Whittaker transform. The special cases namely the generalized hypergeometric function, generalized Laguerre polynomial, Fox H-function etc. are also obtained.
