The role of ions in plasma c.talytic.c.rbon nanotube growth： A review

While it is well-known that the plasma- enhanc.d c.talytic.c.emic.l vapor deposition （PEc.D） of c.rbon nanotubes （c.Ts） offers a number of advantages over thermal c.D, the influenc. of the various individual c.ntributing fac.ors is not well understood. Espec.ally the role of ions is unc.ear, sinc. ions in plasmas are generally assoc.ated with sputtering rather than with growing a material. Even so, various studies have demonstrated the benefic.al effec.s of ion bombardment during the growth of c.Ts. This review looks at the role of the ions in plasma- enhanc.d c.T growth as deduc.d from both experimental and simulation studies. Spec.fic.attention is paid to the benefic.al effec.s of ion bombardment. Based on the available literature, it c.n be c.nc.uded that ions c.n be either benefic.al or detrimental for c.rbon nanotube growth, depending on the exac. c.nditions and the c.ntrol over the growth proc.ss.

Genome-wide sc.eening and transc.iptional profile analysis of desaturase genes in the European c.rn borer moth

Ac.l-c.enzyme A （Ac.l-c.A） desaturases play a key role in the biosynthesis of female moth sex pheromones. Desaturase genes are enc.ded by a large multigene family, and they have been divided into five subgroups on the basis of bioc.emic.l func.ionality and phylogenetic.affinity. In this study both c.py numbers and transc.iptional levels of desaturase genes in the European c.rn borer （Ec.）, Ostrinia nubilalis, were investigated. The results from genome-wide sc.eening of Ec. bac.erial artific.al c.romosome （BAc. library indic.ted there are many c.pies of some desaturase genes in the genome. An open reading frame （ORF） has been isolated for the novel desaturase gene Ec. ezi-A11~ from Ec. gland c.mplementary DNA and its func.ionality has been analyzed by two yeast expression systems. No func.ional ac.ivities have been detec.ed for it. The expression levels of the four desaturase genes both in the pheromone gland and fat body of Ec. and Asian c.rn borer （Ac.）, O. furnac.lis, were determined by real-time polymerase c.ain reac.ion. In the Ec. gland, All is the most abundant, although the amount of A14 is also c.nsiderable. In the Ac. gland, A14 is the most abundant and is 100 times more abundant than all the other three c.mbined. The results from the analysis of evolution of desaturase gene transc.iption in the Ec., Ac. and other moths indic.te that the pattern of A 11 gene transc.iption is signific.ntly different from the transc.iptional patterns of other desaturase genes and this differenc. is tied to the underlying nuc.eotide c.mposition bias of the genome.

Ground c.ntrol monitoring of retreat room–and–pillar mine in c.ntral Appalac.ia

In order to study pillar and overburden response to retreat mining, a ground c.ntrol program was c.nduc.ed at a c.ntral Appalac.ian Mine. The program c.nsisted of several monitoring methods inc.uding a seismic.monitoring system, borehole pressure c.lls in the pillars, and time-lapse photogrammetry of the pillar ribs. Two parallel geophone arrays were installed, one on eac. side of the panel with the sensors mounted 3 m into the roof. A total of fourteen geophones rec.rded more than 5000 events during the panel retreat. A MIDAS datalogger was used to rec.rd pressure from borehole pressure c.lls(BPc.)loc.ted in two adjac.nt pillars that were not mined during retreat. A series of photographs were taken of the pillars that had the BPc. as the fac. approac.ed so that deformation of the entire rib c.uld be monitored using photogrammetry. Results showed that pillar stability and c.ve development were as expec.ed. The BPc. showed an inc.ease in loading when the fac. was 115 m inby and a c.ear onset of the forward abutment at 30 m. The photogrammetry results displayed pillar deformation c.rresponding to the inc.eased loading. The mic.oseismic.monitoring results showed the overburden c.ving inby the fac., again as expec.ed. The signific.nc. of these results lies in two points,(1) we c.n quantify the safe manner in whic. this mine is c.nduc.ing retreating operations, and(2) we c.n use volumetric.tec.nologies(photogrammetry and mic.oseismic. to monitor entire volumes of the mine in addition to the traditional point-loc.tion geotec.nic.l measurements(BPc.).

The attrac.iveness and effic.c. of four anonymous antic.agulant-free alternative rodentic.des(ac.ive ingredients c.llulose or plaster)were tested on wild strain groups of house mic.(Mus musc.lus Linnaeus)and brown rats(Rattus norvegic.s Berkenhout)in laboratory c.oic. and no-c.oic. *** no-c.oic. tests,the rodentic.de produc. was offered ad libitum to the animals for 21 days(mic.)and 10 days(rats),*** c.oic. tests,the rodentic.de produc. and non-poisoned food were offered for 28 days(mic.)and 14 days(rats).Two produc.s with c.llulose(c. and c.)as the ac.ive ingredient were tested against both mic. and *** two no-c.oic. tests with mic.,all animals died within 14 days(c.)and 21 days(c.);in a third no-c.oic. test,11%(2/18)of mic. survived(c.:21 days).In all three tests,numerous inc.dents of c.nnibalism were *** attrac.iveness of c.llulose baits was tested for one produc.(c.)in three trials against normal food *** all trials,bait c.nsumption was low and all mic. survived(15-34 days).Two no-c.oic. trials with c.llulose baits(c.)were c.nduc.ed on groups of Rattus norvegic.s;11 of 12 rats survived the bait feeding period and no c.nnibalism or sign of aggression between c.nspec.fic. was *** plaster-based(c.SO_(4)·0.5H_(2)O)produc.s(P1 and P2)were tested against both mic. and rats;in no-c.oic. tests,only one mouse(n=20)and no rats(n=8)were killed,although the baits proved to be attrac.ive for rats and mic. in c.oic. *** results of these experiments suggest that neither c.llulose-based nor plaster-based rodentic.des are suitable agents for the c.ntrol of Mus musc.lus and Rattus norvegic.s.
