Chloroplasts and bacterial cells divide by binary fission. The key protein in this constriction division is FtsZ, a self-assembling GTPase similar to eukaryotic tubulin. In prokaryotes, FtsZ is almost always encoded by a single gene, whereas plants harbor several nuclear-encoded FtsZ homologs. In seed plants, these proteins group in two families and all are exclusively imported into plastids. In contrast, the basal land plant Physcomitrella patens, a moss, encodes a third FtsZ family with one member. This protein is dually targeted to the plastids and to the cytosol. Here, we report on the targeted gene disruption of all ftsZ genes in R patens. Subsequent analysis of single and double knockout mutants revealed a complex interaction of the different FtsZ isoforms not only in plastid division, but also in chloroplast shaping, cell patterning, plant development, and gravity sensing. These results support the concept of a plastoskeleton and its functional integration into the cytoskeleton, at least in the moss R patens.

Complex systems throughout Nature display structures and functions that are built and maintained, at least in part, by optimal energies flowing through them—not specific, ideal values, rather ranges in energy rate density below which systems are starved and above which systems are destroyed. Cosmic evolution, as a physical cosmology that notably includes life, is rich in empirical findings about many varied systems that can potentially help assess global problems facing us here on Earth. Despite its grand and ambitious objective to unify theoretical understanding of all known complex systems from big bang to humankind, cosmic evolution does have useful, practical applications from which humanity could benefit. Cosmic evolution’s emphasis on quantitative data analyses might well inform our attitudes toward several serious issues now challenging 21st-century society, including global warming, smart machines, world economics, and cancer research. This paper comprises one physicist’s conjectures about each of these applied topics, suggesting how energy-flow modeling can guide our search for viable solutions to real-world predicaments confronting civilization today.

Hydrocalumite, a calcium aluminate hydrate phase, consists of positively-charged structure units, and is therefore an ideal candidate for accommodating anionic contaminants. In this study, a series of batch experiments was carried out to examine the uptake of chromate and selenate by hydrocalumite. To determine the uptake capacity and long-term stability, hydrocalumite solid solutions between chromate/selenate and hydroxyl were synthesized over a reaction time of more than one year. At a ratio of water to initial solids added (CaAl2O4+CaO) of 75: 1, the maximum uptake capacities were over 77 and 114 g/kg for Cr and Se, *** values are very close to the theoretical uptake capacities of chromate and selenate hydrocalumite end-members (81 and 118 g/kg, respectively). The oxyanion removal efficiency from solution was above 95%. Due to the high uptake capacity and anion removal efficiency of hydrocalumites, their application in wastewater treatment is promising. Hydrocalumites are also important hydration products of cementitious materials and the long-term stability of these phases is of significance for application in solidification/stabilization technology.

Objective:To provide an understanding of the incidence of anaplastic thyroid cancer within the United ***:Patients in the Surveillance,Epidemiology,and End Results (SEER) database were included from 1973 to 2014 based on a diagnosis of anaplastic thyroid cancer using ICDO-3 *** were categorized into cohorts based on their year of ***:1527 patients were diagnosed with anaplastic thyroid cancer within the SEER 18 *** age-adjusted incidence rate was 0.2 per 1,000,000 people (95% CI:0.0-0.5) in 1973 and was 1.2 per 1,000,000 people (95% Cl:0.8-1.6) in 2014 (average annual percent change:3.0% [95% CI:2.2%-3.7%]).Patients tended to be of older age (mean age:70.5 [range 15.0-102.0]),of female sex (62.8%),and Caucasian (81.1%).Finally,survival over time remained the same,as median disease specific survival months was 4.00 (95% CI:2.26-5.74) from 1995 to 1999 and 4.00 (95% Cl:3.26-4.74) from 2010 to ***:The incidence rate of anaplastic thyroid cancer has increased from 1973 to ***,median survival in months did not greatly change *** on this increasing incidence,physicians must act appropriately to identify patients with anaplastic thyroid cancer as it possesses a high morbidity and mortality.

Objective:To identify possible associations between patient demographics and parotid cancer histological type in pediatric ***:Pediatric patients(ages:birth-18.0 years)in the Surveillance,Epidemiology,and End Results(SEER)database were included from 1973 to 2014 based on a diagnosis of mucoepidermoid carcinoma or acinic cell carcinoma of the parotid gland using the ICD O-3 codes of C07.9 and 8430 or *** were classified into the following cohorts:justed OR:7.68[95%Cl:2.01-29.44]).When stratified by histological type,58.9%of female pediatric patients≥14 years of age had an acinic cell carcinoma as compared to 37.3%of male pediatric patients≥14 years of age,36.5%of female pediatric patients<14 years of age,and 34.0%of male pediatric patients<14 years of age(P=0.01).Conclusions:Based on this study,pediatric female patients between the ages of 14 and 18 years are the most likely cohort to have acinic cell *** results of this study may assist providers during the work up of a pediatric patient with a suspected parotid malignancy.

The response of a 14 MeV neutron-based prompt gamma neutron activation analysis (PGNAA) system,*** prompt gamma-rays count rate and the average thermal neutron flux,is studied with a large concrete sample and with a homogeneous large sample,which is made of polyethylene and metal with various concentrations of hydrogen and cadmium using the MCNP-5 (Monte Carlo N-Particle) *** average thermal neutron flux is determined by the analysis of the prompt gamma-rays using the thermal neutron activation of hydrogen in the sample,and the thermal and fast neutron activation of carbon graphite irradiation chamber of the *** results demonstrated that the graphite irradiation chamber of the PGNAA-system fairly operates,and is useful to estimate the average thermal neutron flux of large samples with various compositions irradiated by 14 MeV neutrons.
