Testing the rate isomorphy hypothesis using five statistical methods

Organisms are said to be in developmental rate isomorphy when the pro- portions of developmental stage durations are unaffected by temperature. Comprehensive stage-specific developmental data were generated on the cabbage beetle, Colaphellus bowringi Baly （Coleoptera： Chrysomelidae）, at eight temperatures ranging from 16℃ to 30℃ （in 2℃ increments） and five analytical methods were used to test the rate isomor- phy hypothesis, including：（i） direct comparison of lower developmental thresholds with standard errors based on the traditional linear equation describing developmental rate as the linear function of temperature; （ii） analysis of covariance to compare the lower devel- opmental thresholds of different stages based on the Ikemoto-Takai linear equation; （iii） testing the significance of the slope item in the regression line of arcsin（√p） versus tem- perature, where p is the ratio of the developmental duration of a particular developmental stage to the entire pre-imaginal developmental duration for one insect or mite species; （iv） analysis of variance to test for significant differences between the ratios of developmental stage durations to that ofpre-imaginal development; and （v） checking whether there is an element less than a given level of significance in the p-value matrix of rotating regres- sion line. The results revealed no significant difference among the lower developmental thresholds or among the aforementioned ratios, and thus convincingly confirmed the rate isomorphy hypothesis.

Defects in autophagy-mediated clearance of α-synuclein may be one of the key factors leading to progressive loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra. Moxibustion therapy for Parkinson’s disease has been shown to have a positive effect, but the underlying mechanism remains unknown. Based on this, we explored whether moxibustion could protect dopaminergic neurons by promoting autophagy mediated by mammalian target of rapamycin （mTOR）, with subsequent elimination of α-syn. A Parkinson’s disease model was induced in rats by subcutaneous injection of rotenone at the back of their necks, and they received moxibustion at Zusanli （ST36）, Guanyuan （CV4）and Fengfu （GV16）, for 10 minutes at every point, once per day, for 14 consecutive days. Model rats without any treatment were used as a sham control. Compared with the Parkinson’s disease group, the moxibustion group showed significantly greater tyrosine hydroxylase immunoreactivity and expression of light chain 3-II protein in the substantia nigra, and their behavioral score, α-synuclein immunoreactivity,the expression of phosphorylated mTOR and phosphorylated ribosomal protein S6 kinase （p-p70S6K） in the substantia nigra were significantly lower. These results suggest that moxibustion can promote the autophagic clearance of α-syn and improve behavioral performance in Parkinson’s disease model rats. The protective mechanism may be associated with suppression of the mTOR/p70S6K pathway.

AIM: To study the antitumor effect of combined gene therapy of endostatin and interleukin 12 (IL-12) with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) on mouse transplanted ***: Mouse endostatin eukaryotic plasmid (pSecES) with a mouse Igk signal sequence inside and mouse IL-12 eukaryotic plasmid (pmIL-22) were transfected into BHK-22cells respectively. Endostatin and IL-22 were assayed by ELISA from the supernant and used to culture endothelial cells and spleen lymphocytes individually. Proliferation of the latter was evaluated by M-I-r. H22 cells were inoculated into the leg musde of mouse, which was injected intratumorallywith pSecES/PVP, pmIL-12/PVP or pSecES+pmIL-12/PVPrepeatedly. Tumor weight, serum endostatin and serumIL-22 were assayed. Tumor infiltrating lymphocytes, tumormicrovessel density and apoptosis of tumor cells were also displayed by HE staining, CD32 staining and ***: Endostatin and IL-12 were secreted after transfection, which could inhibit the proliferation of endothelial cells or promote the proliferation of spleen *** growth was highly inhibited by 92.8% after injection of pSecES+pmIL-i2/PVP accompanied by higher serum endostatin and IL-22, more infiltrating lymphocytes, fewertumor vessels and more apoptosis cells compared with injection of pSecES/PVP, pmIL-i2/PVP or vector/***: Mouse endostatin gene and IL-12 gene can be expressed after intratumoral injection with *** of hepatoma can be inhibited synergisticly,lymphocytes can be activated to infiltrate, and tumor cells are induced to apoptosis. Hepatoma can be highly inhibited or eradiated.

Objective: To discuss the effect and mechanism of miR-34 a on the proliferation, apoptosis and invasion of laryngeal carcinoma cells. Methods: The laryngeal squamous carcinoma Hep2 cells were transiently transfected with miR-34 a mimics and miR-34 a NC. The MTT, colony-forming assay, Hoechst staining and Annexin V-PI double staining flow cytometry were employed to detect the effect of miR-34 a on the viability and apoptosis of laryngeal squamous carcinoma Hep2 cells; Transwell assay to defect the effect of miR-34 a on the migration and invasion of laryngeal squamous carcinoma Hep2 cells; western blot and RTPCR assay to defect the effect of miR-34 a mimics on the expression of survivin and Ki-67 m RNA in laryngeal squamous carcinoma Hep2 cells. Results: Compared with miR-34 a NC group, the cell viability in miR-34 mimics group was significantly decreased(P<0.01), the cell apoptosis rate was significantly increased(P<0.01), the abilities of cell migration and invasion were significantly reduced(P<0.01) and the expression of survivin and Ki-67 m RNA was significantly decreased(P<0.01). Conclusions: The increased expression of miR-34 a can induce the apoptosis of Hep2 laryngeal carcinoma cells and inhibit the cell proliferation and invasion, which is related to the down-regulated expression of survivin and Ki-67.

The [Zr6(μ2-Cl)12Cl6H4]3- ion with C4v Symmetry in the title compounds has been calculated by DV-Xα program. The calculated results show that ther is almost no available covalence bonding between zirconium atoms and significant Zr 4d AO compositions in the MOs. but there are much stronger Zr-Cl(bridging) bonding. All analysis results suggest that these compounds would be the cluster with Zr6Cl12 cage linked by Zr-Cl bridging bonding plus six Cl teminal ligands rather than the hexazirconium cluster in view of the chemical bonding.

Objective: To investigate the mechanism of survivin, p53 and Ki-67 on Hep-2 human laryngeal cancer endothelial cell proliferation and invasion. Methods: Laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma and paracancerous normal tissues were collected, total RNA was extracted from tissues, survivin, p53 and Ki-67 gene m RNA expression levels in laryngeal cancer and the adjacent tissues were detected by Real-time PCR. Human laryngeal cancer Hep-2 epithelial cells were selected, survivin gene was overexpressed, and cell proliferation was detected by MTT. p53 and Ki-67 gene expression changes in overexpressed survivin gene were detected by Western blot. Changes in Hep-2 cell invasive ability were studied when survivin was overexpressed as detected by Transwell invasion assay. Results: In the adjacent tissues, survivin, p53 and Ki-67 gene relative expression levels were 1.72 ± 0.9, 13.7 ± 5.7 and 5.7 ± 1.3, respectively; while in cancer tissues, gene relative expression levels were 53.7 ± 8.3, 66.7 ± 5.2 and 61.0 ± 3.1, respectively, which was significantly increased. As detected by MTT, relative cell survival rate within 12 h of survivin overexpression were: load control group,(88.5±1.6)%; overexpressed group,(90.3±1.9)%. Transwell invasion assay results indicated that overexpressed survivin could significantly increase the relative survival rate of cells. Conclusions: Expressions of p53, Ki67 and survivin are increased in cancer; and there is a positive correlation between survivin, p53 and Ki67 expressions in laryngeal carcinoma.

An efficient mid-wave infrared gain-switched Cr^(2+):ZnSe laser pumped by a 2.058μm Tm,Ho:YVO_(4)laser is *** much as 3.86 W output is achieved with the pump power of 13.4 W at puke repetition frequency of 15 kHz,corresponding to the slope efficiency of 30.9%.With a quartz birefringent filter inserted in the laser cavity and by rotating the external angle of the quartz birefringent filter,wavelength tuning range nearly from 2453nm to 2508nm with 5nm linewidth(FWHM)is also obtained.

AIM:To predict postoperative intraocular lens(IOL)position using the Sirius anterior segment analysis system and investigate the effect of lens position and IOL type on postoperative ***:A total of 97 patients(102 eyes)were enrolled in the final *** anterior segment biometry measurement was performed preoperatively with Sirius and *** results of predicted lens position(PLP)and IOL power were automatically calculated by the software used by the *** lens position(ELP)was measured manually using Sirius 3 mo ***'s correlation analysis and linear regression analysis were used to determine the correlation of lens position to other ***:PLP and ELP were positively correlated to axial length(AL;r=0.42,P<0.0001 and r=0.49,P<0.0001,respectively).There was a weak correlation between the peLP(ELP-PLP)and the prediction error of spherical refraction(peSR;r=0.34,P<0.0001).The peLP of Softec HD IOL differed statistically from those of both the TECNIS ZCB00 and Sensor AR40E *** linear regression was used to obtain the prediction formula:ELP=0.66+0.63×[aqueous depth(AQD)+0.6 LT](r=0.61,P<0.0001),and a new variable(AQD+0.6 LT)was found to have the strongest correlation with ***:The Sirius anterior segment analysis system is helpful to predict ELP,which reduces postoperative refraction error.

A survey of arsenic and other heavy metals in vegetation from markets or mine tailings

This research includes two investigations. The first one is a market basket survey of the levels of arsenic （As） and trace elements in bracken fern （Pteridium aquilinum） originated from three countries： South Korea, China and North Korea. The results showed that the mean As concentrations in stems of samples were significantly higher than those in leaves. As concentrations in all samples did not exceed food safety limits for vegetables. Generally, concentrations of Fe, Mn, Cu and Zn in leaves were higher than those in stems. The second investigation is a survey on the levels of As and other heavy metals in vegetation in the vicinity of Myoungbong mine tailings. The results demonstrated that As, Pb and Cu concentrations and bioaccumulation factors （BCF） in seedlings of the fern（A splenium achilleifolium） were the highest, whereas Marsh horsetail（Equisetum polustre） accumulated the highest levels of Zn. Concentrations of As, Pb, Zn and Cu in vegetable-cress （Lepidium sativum） and the edible herb-aromatic madder （Elasholtzia splendens） were higher than food safety limits. Therefore, a risk assessment of As and other heavy metals in vegetables and herbs on local human health should be conducted in the future.
