The use of flours or phenolic extracts obtained from non-traditional sources or agri-food industry by-products has been a strategy used to formulate new bakery products with characteristics of a functional ***,phenolic compounds present great structural diversity,as well as the ability to interact in a complex way with the macromolecules that constitute the bread ***,the addition of these flours,extracts or pure compounds produces various effects on the microstructure of bread,and several of its sensory *** is mainly due to interactions between phenolic compounds and gluten *** objective of this review is to analyze some of the most recent published works on the addition of phenolic compounds in wheat bread to identify the type of positive and negative effects that have been observed and how they can be related to the physicochemical interactions between phenolic compounds and the macromolecules that constitute the food matrix,mainly *** effect of monomeric and polymeric phenolic compounds on the strength of these interactions and on the properties of dough and bread are discussed.

Climate-driven variations in productivity reveal adaptive strategies in Iberian cork oak agroforestry systems

Background:Cork oak agroforestry systems(AFS)have been managed for centuries by humans to produce cork and other goods and services and have recently been recognised as an important reservoir for biodiversity improvement and ***,despite having recently been included as a natural habitat of community-wide interest within the EU Habitats Directive,these systems are in a critical situation of *** other factors,they are strongly threatened by climate change,the effects of which are also expected to be particularly severe in the Mediterranean *** this study,we aimed to evaluate the influence of climate variability by examining primary production indicators and also to analyse whether the geographical location may have a role in the incidence of the adverse effects of ***:Cork oak AFS were identified in the Forest Map of Spain and the Land use map of Portugal and categorized on the basis of canopy *** climate data from 2001 to 2020 were used to model relationships with climate predictors and proximity to the *** analysis was conducted to identify significant spatial clusters of high-and low-efficiency ***:The responses to the influence of climatic conditions differed among the various cork oak AFS categories,particularly in the forest category,which was less dependent on climate *** humidity and water availability were the main drivers of net primary production(nPP).Carbon use efficiency(CUE)was limited by relative humidity and spring temperature in open *** to the coast proved beneficial,especially in years with adverse weather conditions,but was not a limiting factor for survival of the ***,the results of the hotspot analysis supported the other findings,highlighting high-efficiency areas close to the coast and cold spots grouped in specific areas or dispersed ***:Canopy plays a key role in the influence of climatic conditions,particu

With the growing number and capacity of photovoltaic(PV)installations connected to distribution networks,power quality issues related to voltage regulation are becoming relevant problems for power distribution companies and for PV *** many countries,like Italy,this has required the revision of the standards concerning the connection to the public distribution network of distributed renewable *** new standards require a flexible operation of generation plants that have to be capable to change the active and reactive power dynamically in function of the network parameters(*** and network local voltage)in local control or following external ***,this paper investigates the use of smart inverter in a critical PV installation,where relevant voltage fluctuations exist.A case study,with real network parameters monitoring data and measurements,is discussed in the paper with the aim of showing how‘smart’features of new inverters can be implemented to increase PV plant integration in low voltage distribution networks.

Adaptive phase field modelling of crack propagation in orthotropic functionally graded materials

In this work,we extend the recently proposed adaptive phase field method to model fracture in orthotropic functionally graded materials(FGMs).A recovery type error indicator combined with quadtree decomposition is employed for adaptive mesh *** proposed approach is capable of capturing the fracture process with a localized mesh refinement that provides notable gains in computational *** implementation is validated against experimental data and other numerical experiments on orthotropic materials with different material *** results reveal an increase in the stiffness and the maximum force with increasing material orientation *** study is then extended to the analysis of orthotropic *** is observed that,if the gradation in fracture properties is neglected,the material gradient plays a secondary role,with the fracture behaviour being dominated by the orthotropy of the ***,when the toughness increases along the crack propagation path,a substantial gain in fracture resistance is observed.

Major depressive disorder(MDD)is a common psychiatric condition characterized by two main symptoms,low mood and *** 15–30%of people suffering from MDD do not respond to standard-of-care antidepressants,e.g.,the serotonin re-uptake inhibitors(SSRI),and are considered affected by Treatment-Resistant Depression(TRD).The neurobiology of this condition is presently *** attempts of developing novel treatments for TRD have been driven by four major breakthroughs:(1)Increasing dopaminergic neurotransmission improves TRD symptoms;(2)Anhedonia occurs when central dopaminergic neurotransmission is low;(3)Enhanced neuroplasticity is critical for the action of antidepressants;(4)Ketamine shows antidepressant properties in TRD patients and triggers neuroplasticity in preclinical animal *** breakthroughs are at the basis of a putative human translational cellular model for antidepressant agents that we are proposing in this *** rationale is briefly described here.

Principles of surgical resection in hilar cholangiocarcinoma

The aim of this article is to describe the surgical techniques for the treatment of hilar cholangiocarcinoma(HC).Resection with microscopically negative margin(R0) is the only way to cure patients with ***,resection of the caudate lobe and part of segment Ⅳ,combined with a right or left hepatectomy,bile duct resection,lymphadenectomy of the hepatic hilum and sometimes vascular resection,is the standard surgical procedure for *** frozen-section examination of proximal and distal biliary margins is necessary to confirm the suitability of *** lymphadenectomy probably has little direct effect on survival,inaccurate staging information may influence post resection treatment *** venous and arterial resections should be undertaken in selected cases to achieve a R0 *** concept of 'no-touch proposed' in 1999 by neuhaus et al combine an extended right hepatectomy with systematic portal vein resection and caudate lobectomy avoiding hilar dissection and possible intraoperative microscopic dissemination of cancer *** recently minor liver resections have been proposed for treatment of *** the hilar bifurcation of the bile ducts is near to liver segments Ⅳ,Ⅴ and Ⅰ,adequate liver resection of these segments together with the bile ducts can result in cure.

Fuel load and flight ranges of blackcaps Sylvia atricapilla in northern Iberia during autumn and spring migrations

Fuel accumulation, mainly as fatty acids, is one of the main characteristics of migratory, birds. Studying to what extent each population or species manages fuel load and how it varies along routes of migration or between seasons （autumn and spring migrations） is crucial to our understanding of bird migration strategies. Our aim here was to analyse whether migratory blackcaps Sylvia atrieapilla passing through northern Iberia differ in their mean fuel loads, rate of fuel accumulation and ＇ potential＇ flight ranges between migration seasons. Blackcaps were mist netted for 4 h-periods beginning at dawn from 16 September to 15 november 2003 - 2005, and from 1 March to 30 April 2004 - 2006 in a European Atlantic hedgerow at Loza, northern Iberia. Both fuel load and fuel deposition rate （this latter assessed with difference in body mass of within-season recaptured individuals） were higher in autumn than in spring. Possible hypotheses explaining these results could be seasonal-associated variations in food availability （likely lower during spring than during autumn）, the fact that a fraction of the migrants captured in spring could breed close to the study area and different selective pressures for breeding and wintering

Biomarkers for pancreatic cancer:Recent achievements in proteomics and genomics through classical and multivariate statistical methods

Pancreatic cancer(PC) is one of the most aggressive and lethal neoplastic diseases. A valid alternative to the usual invasive diagnostic tools would certainly be the determination of biomarkers in peripheral fluids to provide less invasive tools for early diagnosis. nowadays, biomarkers are generally investigated mainly in peripheral blood and tissues through high-throughput omics techniques comparing control vs pathological samples. The results can be evaluated by two main strategies:(1) classical methods in which the identification of significant biomarkers is accomplished by monovariate statistical tests where each biomarker is considered as independent from the others; and(2) multivariate methods, taking into consideration the correlations existing among the biomarkers themselves. This last approach is very powerful since it allows the identification of pools of biomarkers with diagnostic and prognostic performances which are superior to single markers in terms of sensitivity, specificity and robustness. Multivariate techniques are usually applied with variable selection procedures to provide a restricted set of biomarkers with the best predictive ability; however, standard selection methods are usually aimed at the identification of the smallest set of variables with the best predictive ability and exhaustivity is usually neglected. The exhaustive search for biomarkers is instead an important alternative to standard variable selection since it can provide information about the etiology of the pathology by producing a comprehensive set of markers. In this review, the most recent applications of the omics techniques(proteomics, genomics and metabolomics) to the identification of exploratory biomarkers for PC will be presented with particular regard to the statistical methods adopted for their identification.
