Objective:To identify the potentially harmful epiphytic Oscillatoriales species and follow up their distribution along Alexandria ***:Samples were collected bimonthly from April 2009 to February 2010 at three sites along Alexandria *** morphological and molecular analyses were used for identifying the dominant ***:Five species belonging to two families were identified;Oscillatoria acutissima,Oscillatoria nigroviridis,Oscillatoria sp.,Lyngbya majuscule and Phormidium *** cell density ranged from 10^(3)to 126×10^(3)filament g^(-1)fresh weight *** morphological study of the dominant species,Oscillatoria sp.(Oscillatoria sp.W1)showed much similarity with Planktothrix agardhii with no heterocysts and akinetes,while molecular ananlysis(16S rDNA)clustered the species in the same group with Anabaena ***:The 16S rDNA genes are not suitable for identifying Oscillatoriales during the present study and another molecular method should be used instead.

Objective: The aim of the present study is to discriminate functions for sex determination in a subjected sample of the Egyptian population using the morphology of metacarpals and phalanges for gender comparison. Furthermore, the measurements discussed in this study will aid in predicting the differentiation independently and guaranteeing sex determination in the subjected population individually. Methods: Forty measurements were taken from the right metacarpals and phalangeal bones of 100 subjects, whose ages ranged from 19 to 60. Moreover, the measurements of nine metacarpals and four phalangeal bones were used for sex discrimination in each sample population. Results: Males had significantly greater mean values (P imal phalangeal bones of all right-hand fingers than females. The cut-off value and the accuracy percentage for precise sex classification of males and females using individual and grouped bones showed that a value higher than the marking point classified an individual as male and that a lower value suggested female. Besides, the multiple stepwise discriminant functional analysis of the most predictable internal variables of the metacarpals revealed a cross-validated sex classification accuracy of 100%. in contrast, the most predictable internal variables of the phalanges showed a cross-validated sex classification accuracy of 93%. Conclusion: The results revealed a new forensic suggestion for the determination of sex based on the measurements of the metacarpals and the phalanges. Moreover, various discriminant equations were applied for the declaration of this conceivable recommendation.

Background: Continually rising prevalence of obesity and overweight in children and adolescents is a major public health concern. This is due to its various and serious health hazards on one side and its preventable nature on the other side. This study aims at identification of prevalence of overweight and obesity and its risk factors among children between 6 - 14 years of age in Sohag, Egypt. Method: A cross sectional study was conducted on 711 school children between 6 - 14 years in four months’ period from February to May 2016. Weight and height of the studied children were measured to calculate BMi, which was compared with standard Egyptian growth charts for determining overweight and obesity. Then a questionnaire containing data about socio demographic, parental obesity, early life and dietary risk factors was completed by the children’s parents. Result: Out of 711 studied children, 117 (16.5%) were overweight and 104 (14.6%) were obese. Residing in urban area, having an obese parent or both of them, low level of maternal education, being on formula feeding during early life and lack of fresh vegetables and fruits in diets were significant risk factors for overweight and obesity in the studied children (P value ion: improperly educated mothers together with sedentary life style manifested in obesity among the parents and lack of sport practice among children constituted the majors risk factors for childhood obesity. This emphasizes the need for increased health awareness of the community about the importance of proper nutrition and physical activity.

U and Th Determination in Natural Samples Using CR-39 and LR-115 Track Detectors

in this work, a simple and accurate method for U and Th determination in natural samples is proposed. This method is based on simplified calculations of the efficiency factor of the solid state track detector using a thin source approach. Samples were firstly saluted using a concentrated H2SO4 acid and then distributed on a glassy slide where the thickness of the sample was about 7 μm. CR-39 and LR-115 track detectors were exposed to the thin layer of the natural samples for few days and then the track densities were obtained. By the mean of originated track densities in CR-39 and LR-115 as a function of exposure time and sample weight, the concentration of U and Th in Bq/kg were obtained by the thin source approach of SSNTD.

Background: B-cell Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL) is a neoplasm of lymphoblasts which are of B-cell lineage typically composed of small to medium sized blast cells, moderately condensed to dispersed chromatin with scanty cytoplasm and inconspicuous nucleoli, involving the bone marrow and/or blood. Methods and materials: This is a prospective cross-sectional study in which 50 blood and/or bone marrow samples of newly diagnosed patients (B-ALL) were tested for immunophenotyping. All samples were prepared for surface and cytoplasmic markers including kappa and lambda human antibody for 10 minutes in dark place and then run by the Flow Cytometer. Results: 64% of the study populations were males and 36% were females. Cases were classified according to immunophenotype and the age into different subtypes and showed the following frequencies: Pro B-ALL (8%), early pre B-ALL (56%), common B-ALL (16%), Pre-B-ALL (14%) and Mature B-ALL (only 6%). Surface immunoglobulin was positive in 10% and negative in 90% of all patients, showing 100% positivity in mature B-ALL and totally negative in other subtypes. While cytoplasmic immunoglobulin was positive in 16% and negative in 84% of all patients and was positive in 100% of Pre-B-ALL and in 50% of mature B-ALL. Surface kappa was more expressed in mature B-ALL than lambda giving a ratio of 2:1, while cytoplasmic kappa:lambda was 6:1 in Pre-B-ALL. Conclusion: Kappa and lambda have important role in B-ALL classification which necessitates their presence in immunophenotyping of B-ALL.

Background: Acute myeloid leukemia is a heterogeneous hematological malignancy with diversity in molecular, phenotypic and genetic alteration. Accurate assessment of prognosis is mandatory to reduce relapse, changing treatment related mortality, decision making for appropriate therapy protocols. Aim: A case control observational analytical study to assess the prognostic value of poliovirus (CD155) in acute myeloid leukemia and its significant in-patient stratification. Subject & Methods: 100 newly diagnosed de novo AML selected from oncology center, Mansoura University. Measurement of PVR (CD155) by multiparameter flow cytometry in addition to cytogenetic and molecular stratification. Results: Statistical stratification according to median cut off CD155 > 5.35. Higher expression was associated with an increased risk of death and relapse, LDH. While lower expression is associated with longer OS & DFS. Cox regression with univariate analysis revealed that LDH, molecular stratification, CD155 were significant risk factors for shorter OS, while positive expression of CD16, CD56 AML M3 were significantly associated with longer survival. Multivariate analysis revealed that CD155 was a significant risk factor for shorter OS. Conclusion: Variability in expression of CD155 in AML patients due to dual costimulatory and inhibitory function, high expression associated with tumor bulk and progression, short OS, increased relapse rate. Cox regression analysis shows its independent risk factor. it could be implemented in routine laboratory for risk stratification into low, high risk that needs more therapeutic modalities with new immunotherapy. in future could be targeted therapy such as PDL, CTLA-4 and open more therapeutic hope for those patients.

Purpose: This study was conducted to detect iL-6 in synovial fluid in cases with TMJ internal derangement. Patients & Methods: This study was conducted on forty patients ASA class i with TMJ internal derangement. All patients had been subjected to arthrocentesis. The synovial fluid was collected before wash and lavage was done for the affected joint. Then, the selected patients were divided randomly into two equal groups, group i: consisted of 20 patients where arthrocentesis was performed for the affected joint followed by intraarticular injection of one ml, tramadol hydrochloride. Group ii: consisted of 20 patients where arthrocentesis was performed for the affected joint followed by intraarticular injection of one ml. sodium hyaluronate. Another synovial fluid sample was aspirated after one month. The interlieukin-6 receptors in the aspirated synovial fluid were measured using humans iL-6 enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results: iL-6 was detected in the synovial fluid of joints with internal derangement. During follow up assessment of iL-6, the maximum decrease in iL-6 level was in the patients of group i who subjected to arthrocentesis with tramadol injection, as the mean iL-6 was (4.93 ± 1.36) followed by the patients of group ii who subjected to arthrocentesis with sodium hyaluronate injection where the mean iL-6 level was (6.88 ± 1.76). There were significant p-value = (P = 0.000). Conclusions: it had been concluded that the detection of iL-6 in the synovial fluid of joints with internal derangement considered an indicator for inflammatory reaction in the joint and also the efficacy of arthrocentesis with tramadol suggested its anti-inflammatory effect.

Background & objectives: Data regarding tumor marker usefulness in diagnosing ascites of unknown etiology and determining its malignant nature are conflicting. We aim to assess the diagnostic value of ascitic and serum tumor markers in ascites of unknown etiology and to evaluate their usefulness besides other laboratory tests in a diagnostic work-up in those patients. Design & setting: A prospective case-control study conducted at Assiut University hospital and oncology institute. Patients & Methods: Three groups were included;Group i: 41 patients with ascites of unknown etiology Group ii: 7 Patients with TB ascites and Group iii:14 patients with cirrhotic ascites. We assessed the CEA, CEA mRNA, CA15-3, CA19.9, CA125, AFP and PSA in serum and ascetic fluid. A diagnostic work-up for group i included: iPD test, ultrasound, CT, ascetic fluid cytology, SAAG, Laparotomy and biopsy. Results: Ascetic fluid and serum levels of CA15-3 and CA125 were significantly increased in group i and were significantly increased in histopathologically proved malignant ascites compared to TB and cirrhotic ascites. in group i, CA 125 was significantly higher in ascites than serum. With the exception of PSA, all tumor markers significantly correlated in serum and ascetic fluid. No significant difference in the level of ascetic CEA messenger RNA was detected between the 3 groups. Cytology had 53% sensitivity, 94% specificity and CA 125 & CA15-3 had 81% sensitivity and 75% specificity in detection of malignant ascites repectively. Laparotomy and biopsy: diagnosed malignnancy in 53.3% and TB in 13.3%. Conclusions: A diagnostic work-up including SAAG, tumor markers in the serum and ascetic fluid may help in adjunct with ascetic fluid cytology, laparotomy and biopsy, imag- ing and other laboratory tests in diagnosing ascites of unknown etiology.
