Assessment of radiological Hazards of Sedimentary, Igneous and Sediments Natural Rocks

Gamma-ray spectroscopy based on a 100% efficiency hyper-pure germanium detector was used to evaluate the activity concentrations of 226ra, 232Th, and 40K natural radionuclides in sedimentary, conglomerate, igneous and sedi-ments rock samples collected from four different locations in Eastern desert in Egypt. The obtained activity concentrations are used to evaluate the radi-ological hazards indices, absorbed dose rate, annual effective dose equivalent in air, radium equivalent, external and internal hazard index, radiation level index, annual gonadal dose equivalent, excess lifetime cancer risk and expo-sure rate. The results show that 1) the absorbed dose rate depends on the rock type, 2) the annual effective dose equivalent in air in 71% of sample below 20 mSvy-1 (permissible limit for workers), 3) the conglomerate rocks show low radioactivity level, 4) sedimentary rocks are rich in radium while igneous rocks are rich in thorium and the sediments rocks are rich in both radium and thorium.

Modification of Serum Galectin-3 and Reversal of Cardiac Remodeling Following Pediatric Transcatheter Atrial Septal Defect Closure

Objectives:We aimed to evaluate the effect of percutaneous atrial septal defect(ASD)closure in children using right heart indices and serum galectin-3(Gal-3),as potential biomarkers of right heart ***:This case–control prospective study included 40 children with ASD and 25 control *** echocardiographic evaluation was performed before the procedure,as well as 24 h,1 month,and 6 months after *** Gal-3 was measured before,and 1 month after the ***:Serum Gal-3 concentration,right atrial(ra)dimensions,right ventricular(RV)dimensions,indexed ra area,and right index of myocardial performance(RIMP)were significantly increased in children with ASD compared with control subjects while tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion(TAPSE)was significantly *** months after closure,ra,and RV dimensions significantly decreased and RVfunction improved(RIMP decreased and TAPSE increased).Gal-3 oncentration significantly decreased 1 month after ASD closure,but it did not reach normal range compared with control subjects.A positive correlation between Gal-3 and age at closure,ra area,RV dimensions,and RIMP was observed.A positive correlation was observed between the decrease in Gal-3 concentration and the decrease in ra area and RV dimensions 1 month after ASD closure.A significant negative correlation was observed between TAPSE and Gal-3 concentration before and after ***:Percutaneous ASD closure can improve right-sided indices and decrease serum Gal-3 ***-3 can be used as a sensitive biomarker of right heart remodeling,with a decrease in Gal-3 concentration suggesting reversal of maladaptive remodeling.

Analysis of Association between Interleukin-6 (IL6), Interleukin-13 (IL13) and Tumor Necrosis Factor-Alpha (TNF-alpha) Gene Polymorphisms and Genetic Susceptibility of Rheumatoid Arthritis in Kuwaiti Arab

Background: Rheumatoid arthritis (ra) is a common autoimmune disease in which a combination of risk alleles from different susceptibility genes predisposes the patients to develop clinical symptoms following exposure to environmental factors. ra is a chronic and progressive disease characterized by synovial inflammation that results in destruction in the affected joints and severe problems in individual’s mobility. Several immune-related risk factors have been associated with ra, these include single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in cytokine genes. The impact of these cytokine gene polymorphisms is due to their association either with elevated serum levels and/or variations in their serum levels are associated with disease-onset and progression. The objective of this study was to investigate the role of Interleukin-6 (IL6), Interleukin-13 (IL13) and Tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) gene polymorphisms in genetic susceptibility of ra in Kuwaiti patients. Methods: We have determined the genotypes of IL6 gene (-174G/C;rs1800795), IL13 gene (R130Q;rs20541) and TNF-alpha gene (-308A/G' rs1800629) polymorphisms in 192 Kuwaiti patients with ra and compared it to that in 104 healthy controls. The diagnosis of ra was based on the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) classification criteria. The genotypes for IL6, IL13 and TNF-alpha gene polymorphisms were determined by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) methods and confirmed by DNA sequencing. Results: The frequency of IL6 gene (-174G/C;rs1800795) and TNF-alpha gene (-308A/G' rs1800629) polymorphisms manifested a statistically significant difference between Kuwaiti ra patients and controls (P = 0.02 and 0.002 respectively). In contrast, the frequency of IL13 gene (R130Q;rs20541) polymorphism did not show a significant difference between Kuwaiti ra patients and controls. Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1ras) provide adequate glycemic control, weight reduction, low risk of hypoglycemia, and CV risk reduction. Their usage for type 2 DM (T2DM) is recommended mainly when hypoglycemia or weight gain should be considered, also, whenever initial therapy is failed. There are many recent updates in the treatment paradigm of T2DM. There are many types of GLP-1ras, with a knowledge gap regarding switching between the different types. A Saudi task force gathered to develop an explicit, evidence-based consensus for switching between GLP-1ras, when, why, and how? This article contains the expert panel’s recommendations as a contribution to complement the knowledge gap in this area from the national perspective. As an alternative to intensifying therapy, switching from one GLP-1ra to another has various advantages. Improvements in glycemic control, weight loss, adherence, and medications with established cardiovascular benefits are among them. Also, switching needs to be individualized upon many discussed factors like the dose of the previous GLP1-ra and gastrointestinal adverse effects. Discussion with patients about the why and how to switch is critical.
