Ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury still represents an important cause of morbidity following hepatic surgery and limits the use of marginal livers in hepatic transplantation. Transient blood flow interruption followed by reperfusion protects tissues against damage induced by subsequent I/R. This process known as ischemic pre-conditioning (IP) depends upon intrinsic cytoprotective systems whose activation can inhibit the progression of irreversible tissue damage. Compared to other organs,liver IP has additional features as it reduces inflammation and promotes hepatic regeneration. Our present understanding of the molecular mechanisms involved in liver IP is still largely incomplete. Experimental studies have shown that the protective effects of liver IP are triggered by the release of adenosine and nitric oxide and the subsequent activation of signal networks involving protein kinases such as phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase,protein kinase C δ/ε and p38 MAP kinase,and transcription factors such as signal transducer and activator of transcription 3,nuclear factor-κB and hypoxia-inducible factor 1. This article offers an overview of the molecular events underlying the preconditioning effects in the liver and points to the possibility of developing pharmacological approaches aimed at activating the intrinsic protective systems in patients undergoing liver surgery.

Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome is a severe cardio pulmonary disease transmitted to humans by sylvan rodents found in natural and rural *** transmission is closely linked to the ecology of animal reservoirs and abiotic factors such as habitat characteristics,season or climatic *** main goals of this research were:to determine the biotic and abiotic factors affecting richness and abundance of rodent species at different spatial scales,to evaluate different methodologies for studying population of small rodents,and to describe and analyze an ecologically-based rodent management experience in a highly touristic area.A 4-year study of small rodent ecology was conducted between April 2007 and August 2011 in the most relevant habitats of El Palmar National Park,*** involved a wide range of control and prevention measures,including poisoning,culling and habitat modification.A total of 172 individuals of 5 species were captured with a trapping effort of 13860 traps-nights(1.24 individuals/100 traps-nights).Five rodent species were captured,including 2 hantavirus-host species,Oligoryzomys nigripes and Akodon *** nigripes,host of a hantavirus that is pathogenic in humans,was the most abundant species and the only one found in all the studied *** results are inconsistent with the dilution effect *** present study demonstrates that sylvan rodent species,including the hantavirus-host species,have distinct local habitat selection and temporal variation patterns in abundance,which may influence the risk of human exposure to hantavirus and may have practical implications for disease transmission as well as for reservoir management.

Characterization of an Area Polluted by Copper and Zinc:the Relation between Soil Texture,Mineralogy and Pollutant Concentration

Twenty-four soil samples were collected at three depths from an approximately 2.5 acre contaminated site in southern Piedmont （Italy） and then analyzed. The main soil parameters determined were： pH, Cation Exchange Capacity （CEC）, particle size distribution, total organic carbon （TOC） content and retained metal concentration. The mineral phases were identified by X-Ray Powder Diffraction （XRPD）. All of the samples contained Zn and Cu resulting from industrial contamination during the last century, and those obtained at depths of 20-40 cm consistently showed the highest levels. To determine which size fraction was most active in the retention process, the samples were separated into four fractions （≤2 mm, ≤63 0m, ≤30 0m and ≤2 μm） and the amount of pollutant measured in each. It was found that metal retention was the highest in the clayey fraction, whose clay minerals were identified by XRPD after K＋ and Mg2＋ saturation, glycerol treatment and heating to 550℃. The clayey fraction was also the richest in TOC, and a direct correlation between TOC amount and metal retention was observed.

The influence of the crystalline nature of nano-metal oxides on their antibacterial and toxicity properties

The antibacterial properties of nano-metal oxides （ZnO, CuO） are based on the formation of reactive oxygen species （ROS）. This work reveals that the antibacterial properties of these nano-metal oxides are strongly dependent on their crystalline structure. The antibacterial activity of the nanooxides was tested against four types of bacteria that commonly cause nosocomial infections. The sonochemical method was applied not only for synthesis of nanooxides but also to their coating on textiles. The antibacterial properties of textiles coated with commercial and sonochemically prepared nano-metal oxides were evaluated and compared. The toxicity was evaluated on human lung cells and amphibian embryos, as representative models for inhalation and aquatic toxicology. The sonochemically prepared metal nanooxides are better antimicrobials than commercially available metal oxides with the same particle size range. It was found that the crystallites which have more defects and less organized structure are more toxic. The formation of ROS was studied by electron spin resonance （ESR） measurements for both the sonochemically prepared and commercial samples of ZnO/CuO nanoparticles. A significant increase in the production of radical species was found in the more defective, sonochemically prepared samples, as compared to the commercial ones. Since modulation of the nanoparticle defects influenced their toxicity, the possibility of engineering safer nano-antibacterials is indicated.

Adipocytes’biology and the mechanisms that control adipogenesis have gained importance because of the need to develop therapeutic strategies to control obesity and the related *** mesenchymal stem cells(hMSCs),undifferentiated stem cells present in the bone marrow that are physiological precursors of adipocytes,were induced to adipogenic *** molecular mechanisms on the basis of the adipogenesis were evaluated,focusing on the MAPKinases ERK1 and ERK2,which are involved in many biological and cellular ***1 and ERK2 phosphorylation was reduced with different timing and intensity for the two isoforms in treated hMSCs in comparison with control cells until day 10 and then at 14–28 days,it reached the level of untreated *** total amount of ERK1 was also decreased up to day 10 and then was induced to the level of untreated cultures,whereas the expression of ERK2 was not changed following adipogenic *** with the specific ERK1/2 inhibitor U0126 during the whole differentiation period hampered hMSCs’adipogenic differentiation,as lipid droplets appeared in very few cells and were reduced in number and *** U0126 was administered only during the initial phase of differentiation,the number of hMSCs recruited to adipogenesis was reduced while,when it was administered later,hMSCs did not acquire a mature adipocytic ***1 and ERK2 are important for hMSC adipogenic differentiation since any alteration to the correct timing of their phosphorylation affects either the recruitment into the differentiation program and the extent of their maturation.
