Carbon coating of air-sensitive insulating transition metal fluorides:An example study on α-Li3FeF6 high-performance cathode for lithium ion batteries

Li_(3)FeF_(6)has been the focus of research of fluorine-based cathode materials for lithium-ion *** of the low electronic conductivity of Li3 FeF6,the decrease of particle size,by an energyconsuming long-time ball milling process with carbon,is necessary to achieve a high electrochemical *** most successful method to enhance electrochemical activity,carbon coating,seemed to be impracticable,so far,for sensitive fluorides like Li3 *** this work,carbon coating on Li3 FeF6 particles has been successfully achieved for the first time,while avoiding both extended hydrolysis and Fe(Ⅲ)-Fe(Ⅱ)*** heat treatment and atmosphere,yielding the maximal transformation of organic carbon to both graphitised and disordered carbon,has been *** coating,with a thickness of approximately 2.5 nm,has been achieved by controlled thermal decomposition of glucose,under air,at 300℃.Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS)experiments have proved the existence of carbon and Fe2O3 on the surface of Li3FeF6 *** spectroscopy indicates the presence of organic residues from glucose *** to further reduce the orga nic carbon content results in a decrease of the amorphous carbon coating *** carbon-coated Li3 FeF6 nanoparticles deliver 122 mA h g^(-1)(85%of theoretical capacity)significantly higher than that of a noncoated sample(58 mA h g^(-1)).Even more,a significant beneficial effect of carbon coating on both capacity retention and coulombic efficiency is observed.

Short and long term corneal biomechanical analysis after overnight orthokeratology

AIM: To investigate the short and long term corneal biomechanical changes after overnight orthokeratology(OK) and compare them with those occurring in subjects not wearing contact ***: Retrospective case control study enrolling 54 subjects that were divided into three groups 18 subjects each: control group(CG), short term(15 nights) OK(STOK) group, and long term(more than 1 y of OK wear) OK(LTOK) group. Corneal biomechanics were characterized using the Cor Vis? ST system(Oculus), recording parameters such as time [first/second applanation time(AT1, AT2)], speed [velocity of corneal apex at the first/second applanation time(AV1, AV2)], and amplitude of deformation(AD1, AD2) in the first and second corneal flattening, corneal stiffness(SPA1), biomechanically corrected intraocular pressure(b IOP) and corneal(CBI) and tomographic biomechanical indices(TBI).RESULTS: Significantly lower AD1 and standard deviate on of Ambrosio’s relational average thickness related to the horizontal profile(ARTh) values were found in the OK groups compared to CG(P<0.05). Likewise, significantly higher values of CBI were found in STOK and LTOK groups compared to CG(P<0.01). No significant differences between groups were found in integrated radius index(P=0.24), strain stress index(P=0.22), tomographic biomechanical index(P=0.91) and corneal stif fness parameter(SPA1, P=0.97). Significant inverse correlations were found between corneal thickness and CBI in STOK(r=-0.90, P<0.01) and LTOK groups(r=-0.71, P<0.01).CONCLUSION: OK does not seem to alter significantly the corneal biomechanical properties, but special care should be taken when analyzing biomechanical parameters influenced by corneal thickness such as amplitude of deformation, ARTh or CBI, because they change significantly after treatment but mainly due to the reduction and pachymetric progression induced by the corneal molding secondary to OK treatment.

Fungal endophytes are receiving increasing attention as resources to improve crop production and ecosystem ***,the biology and ecological significance of these symbionts remains poorly understood,due to a lack of model systems for more efficient *** this work,we have analyzed the culturable endophytic mycobiota associated,in the wild,with leaves and siliques of the model plant *** have studied the effect of biotic and abiotic factors in the frequency of fungal endophytes in plant specimens,and in the species composition of the endophytic *** results indicate that the frequency of Arabidopsis plants hosting endophytes depends on the time of the year and the phenological stage of the plant,and that the probability of endophyte colonization increases as the life cycle of the plant *** diversity of the endophytic assemblages of natural *** populations was high,and precipitation and temperature were the two main factors determining the diversity and species composition of the *** propose *** and its endophytes as a model system for an integral approach to the principles governing the endophytic lifestyle,taking advantage of the molecular tools and the abundant knowledge accessible from the host plant.

We report on the biodegradation of pure hydrocarbons and chemotaxis towards these compounds by an isolated chlorophenol degrader,Pseudomonas strain *** biochemical and phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rDNA sequence identified Pseudomonas strain H as having 99.56% similarity with *** *** strain was able to degrade n-hexadecane,1-undecene,1-nonene,1-decene,1-dodecene and *** grew in the presence of 1-octene,while this hydrocarbons is toxic to other hydrocarbons *** strain H was also chemotactic towards n-hexadecane,kerosene,1-undecene and *** results show that this Pseudomonas strain H is an attractive candidate for hydrocarbon-containing wastewater bioremediation in controlled *** the classical standard techniques for detecting chemotaxis are not efficient at low bacterial concentrations,we demonstrate the use of the dynamic speckle laser method,which is simple and inexpensive,to confirm bacterial chemotaxis at low cell concentrations （less than 105 colony-forming unit per millilitre （CFU/mL）） when hydrocarbons are the attractants.

Due to the advances in screening of cirrhotic patients, hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) is being diagnosed in earlier stages. For this reason the number of patients diagnosed of very early HCC(single tumors ≤ 2 cm) is continuously increasing. Once a patient has been diagnosed with this condition, treatment strategies include liver resection, local therapies or liver transplantation. The decision on which therapy should the patient undergo depends on the general patients performance status and liver disease. Anyway, even in patients with similar conditions, the best treatment offer is debatable. In this review we analyze the state of the art on the management of very early HCC on cirrhotic patients to address the best treatment strategy for this patient population.

Liver transplantation for cholangiocarcinoma:Current status and new insights

Cholangiocarcinoma is a malignant tumor of the biliary system that can be classified into intrahepatic(i CCA),perihiliar(ph CCA) and distal. Initial experiences with orthotopic liver transplantation(OLT) for patientswith i CCA and ph CCA had very poor results and this treatment strategy was abandoned. In the last decade,thanks to a strict selection process and a neoadjuvant chemoradiation protocol,the results of OLT for patients with non-resectable phC CA have been shown to be excellent and this strategy has been extended worldwide in selected transplant centers. Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma is a growing disease in most countries and can be diagnosed both in cirrhotic and in non-cirrhotic livers. Even though OLT is contraindicated in most centers,recent investigations analyzing patients that were transplanted with a misdiagnosis of HCC and were found to have an iC CA have shown encouraging results. There is some information suggesting that patients with early stages of the disease could benefit from OLT. In this review we analyze the current stateof-the-art of OLT for cholangiocarcinoma as well as the new insights and future perspectives.

Breast cancer is the number one cause of can- cer deaths among Hispanic women in the United States, and in Mexico, it recently became the primary cause of cancer deaths. This malign- nancy represents a poorly understood and un- derstudied disease in Hispanic women. The ELLA Binational Breast Cancer Study was es- tablished in 2006 as a multi-center study to as- sess patterns of breast tumor markers, clinical characteristics, and their risk factors in women of Mexican descent. We describe the design and implementation of the ELLA Study and provide a risk factor comparison between women in the U.S. and those in Mexico based on a sample of 765 patients (364 in the U.S. and 401 in Mexico). Compared to women in Mexico, U.S. women had significantly (p < 0.05) lower parity (3.2 vs. 3.9 mean live births) and breastfeeding rates (57.5% vs. 80.5%), higher use of oral contraceptives (60.7% vs. 50.1%) and hormone replacement therapy (23.3% vs. 7.6%), and higher family history of breast cancer (15.7% vs. 9.0%). Re- sults show that differences in breast cancer risk factor patterns exist between Mexico and U.S. women. We provide lessons learned from the conduct of our study. Binational studies are an important step in understanding disease pat- terns and etiology for women in both countries.
