t.e cochlear implant.is a prost.esis t.at.is capable t. replace list.ning capabilit. among pat.ent. wit. sensorineural hearing loss. Many st.dies suggest.a negat.ve relat.onship among durat.on of sound deprivat.on and audiomet.ic gain (by means of speech percept.on t.st. aft.r cochlear implant.t.on. We evaluat.d surgical and audiologic result. among post.lingual deafened adult., in different.t.mes of sound deprivat.on, and correlat.d wit. social isolat.on, presence of vert.go or t.nnit.s, and t.e speech t.erapy yield, bet.een pre- and post.operat.ve st.ges. A ret.ospect.ve st.dy was conduct.d on pat.ent. wit. post.lingual hearing loss, aged over 18 years old who underwent.cochlear implant.surgery in a public hospit.l from 2004 t. 2014. Audiological, socio-demographic quest.onnaire, and manifest.t.ons of vert.go and t.nnit.s, during pre- and post.operat.ve st.ges, were compared and correlat.ng t. t.e different.periods of sound deprivat.on. t.o groups were st.died. t.e group A was composed of 38 part.cipant. (14 male and 24 female) wit. sound deprivat.on of less t.an 10 years;and group B was composed of 17 part.cipant. (8 male and 9 female) wit. sound deprivat.on longer t.an 10 years. We found no differences regarding age, sex, durat.on of sound deprivat.on, mean pure-t.ne audiomet.ic result. (pre- and post.surgery), and speech percept.on t.st. (pre-operat.vely). Aft.r one year of t.e surgery, we observed a significant.difference bet.een bot. groups, wit. a bet.er performance t. group A. t.e result. of speech percept.on t.st. aft.r cochlear implant.t.on in group B, were worse t.an t.e result. obt.ined in group A, alt.ough t.ese correlat.ons are not.det.rminant.whet.er t. perform cochlear implant.surgery or not.

Object.ve: t. verify t.e efficacy of cochlear implant.t.on in a pat.ent.wit. Arnold-Chiari syndrome. Design: Review of a medical chart.from a pat.ent.wit. Arnold-Chiari syndrome t.at.underwent.t. cochlear implant.surgery. Case report. A 6 year-old female, wit. meningomyelocele and congenit.l hydrocephalus, deaf in t.e past.3 years, aft.r meningit.s. At.t.at.t.me, she used oral language wit. adequat. speech development. t.ne audiomet.y revealed bilat.ral profound sensorineural hearing loss. t.e MRI was compat.ble wit. t.e Arnold-Chiari syndrome. Cochlear implant.t.on was performed on t.e left.ear wit. MED-EL? Implant.(model SONAt.t.100). Current.y, t.e child is 12 year-old, performs speech t.erapy t.ree t.mes a week, wit. good hearing and language development. Conclusion: Despit. t.e presence of Arnold-Chiari syndrome (Chiari t.pe II) wit. neurological disorders and wit. vent.iculoperit.neal shunt. pat.ent.had good hearing result. aft.r cochlear implant.surgery.
