Background: The world is currently experiencing a healthcare crisis caused by Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Healthcare workers (HCWs) are at the forefront of controlling the spread of the disease;this response has resulted in a huge number of infections amongst HCWs and unfortunately some casualties. Infection prevention and control practices (IPC) are practical, proven methods that prevent avoidable harm to patients and protect health workers from contagious infection. This study was done to evaluate the effectiveness of IPC practices utilized in CoVID-19 testing drive through facility in Lagos Nigeria. Method: The facility recruited 42 HCWs who were trained on IPC and use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs). Training on donning and doffing of PPEs, preparation of decontaminants and sample handling were done for relevant personnel. A daily log for monitoring CoVID-19 symptoms was deployed to all HCWs;to help early detection of CoVID-19 infection and prevent transmission amongst staff. Results: of 42 personnel, 92.8% had a tertiary level of education while 71.4% had at least 5 years work experience. A total of 5 (11.9%) out of 42 HCWs were positive by week six of the study. All infected persons worked at the drive through centre. Most common symptom filled in the daily log tool was headache and fatigue. Conclusion: Despite all the measures introduced, 11.9% of HCWs became positive within 6 weeks, showing the highly infectious nature of the virus and the need to research into more effective measures in preventing the transmission of highly infectious pathogens to HCWs during outbreaks.

Kaolin is one of the most important industrial minerals whose application is dependent on its structure and chemical composition. This study makes an attempt to explore and determine the origin of kaolin deposits within and around okpella, as well as to investigate the mineralogical and chemical compositions using the X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) method. These were carried out with the intention of determining the most suitable applications for the clay mineral. It was observed that major phases in the clay samples from the three different deposits are kaolinite, microcline, illite/mica, plagioclase/albite and quartz. These phases were observed in varied percentages. Samples from Ajego 2 show a marked absence of kaolinite but contain high concentration of plagioclase feldspar and quartz which permit its usage in the production of glass and iron industries. Further, the samples from Ajego 1 contain by far the highest concentration of kaolinite, while the samples from Anegha consist of kaolinite, a mixed layer of illite/mica, plagioclase, alkali feldspars, and albite which is necessary for producing mullite fibers in ceramic matrix at a temperature of around 1400°C and it is suitable in pigment production. The XRF result for Ajego2 and Anegha samples has Silica composition of 51.847 wt%, 32.540 wt% and 37.295 wt% respectively and an alumina content of 14.962 wt%, 29.834 wt% and 20.227 wt% respectively. The trace amount of some of the oxides such as K2o, Tio2, Fe2o3 and Sno2 can help in the beneficiation process.

This research work is focused on the design and fabrication of Novel oven-Furnace, using locally sourced materials for the purpose of carrying out drying and thermochemical treatments in accordance to the International Electric Equipment (IEE) regulations. Working drawings were produced, and mild steel sheet was used for the construction of the casing, while other materials for the construction were selected based on functions and properties of the materials, cost considerations and ease of fabrication into component parts. The design closely revealed the parameters and features of the furnace, but the control system was designed to function systematically as oven and Furnace. Testing was carried out to evaluate the performance of the oven-Furnace. From the result obtained, it was observed that the oven-Furnace has fast heating rate which is comparable to rates of conventional brands of furnaces purchased from Germany or Canada. Unlike the ordinary furnaces, this equipment was designed to operate systematically to maintain constant temperature at any set temperature value. The lower cost of design of the oven-Furnace coupled with its good heat retaining capacity, long estimated life time, uniform heating rate, controlled atmosphere, safety and ease of maintenance justifies the usage.

Background: Maintenance of optimal Endotracheal Tube cuff Pressure (ETTcP) in anaesthetic practice reduces cuff pressure complications. Aneroid manometers for measurement of ETTcP are not widely available in Ghana, hence anaesthesia providers estimate ETTcP according to their experience. The study assessed ETTcP obtained from estimation techniques between anaesthesia providers at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH). It also evaluated the Volume of Air Required (VAR) to obtain an acceptable cuff inflation pressure for sizes 7.0 and 8.0 mm adult endotracheal tubes used at the hospital, and the effect of patient’s age, weight and height on this volume. Methods: Eighty-one patients who underwent general anaesthesia were recruited. ETTcP was measured using an aneroid manometer via a three-way tap. After full cuff deflation, the cuff was refilled with air until an ETTcP of 20 cm H2o was obtained. Independent t-test was used to measure the statistical variations in the ETTcP using estimation techniques in relation to recommended levels as well as the significant difference of mean VAR to obtain a cuff pressure of 20 cm H2o. Grouped t-test was used to determine significant differences in ETTcP between anaesthesia providers using estimation techniques. Results: Mean ETTcP obtained from estimation techniques was (61.87, 73.79) cm H2o. The mean ETTcP measured for Physician and Nurse Anaesthetists were 65.36 cm H20 and 69.52 cm H2o respectively. The mean VAR to achieve an ETTcP of 20 cm H2o for endotracheal tube sizes 7.0 mm and 8.0 mm were 3.90 ± 1.13 mls and 4.55 ± 0.95 mls respectively. Age and weight significantly influenced the VAR to achieve a cuff pressure of 20 cm H2o, however, height did not. Conclusions: This study demonstrated that cuff pressures obtained by estimation techniques were generally higher than the recommended average with no significant difference between anaesthesia providers.
