Epidemiological, Clinical and Therapeutic Aspects of Spinal Pathology in Military People in a Country at War

Introduction: Lumbar and sciatic pain are frequent motives of disability in military people in Mali. As spine surgery isn’t recognized enough, our study aims to analyze etiologies, epidemiology, clinical features and surgical standards in order to improve troop abilities. Methodology: Our descriptive and retrospective study has included 31 operated military patients who underwent medical or surgical procedures between 2010 and 2018 in the Military Neurology/Neurosurgery Unit and Mère-Enfant Hospital Neurosurgery department. Results: Among 553 seen in consultation, fifty percent were between 30 and 50 years old. Main motive was sciatic pain (65.5%). Seventy eight percent of our patients were field militaires and sub-officers, and 83.2% were males. All of them have benefited a CT scan or MRI with medical treatment in rheumatology or neurology. Thirty-one patients underwent spine surgery and were included in the study, so 6% (mean age: 43.52 years, 90.3% males). Lumbar spine surgery represented 54.8% of cases with lumbar canal stenosis in 64.5% of cases. It appeared that spondylolisthésis with isthmic fracture was frequent (12.9%), and traumatic cervical spine fractures were dominant in 2012. Instrumented arthrodesis was performed for 41.9% of patients, lumbar discectomy for 32.3% and laminectomies for 22.6%. Due to acidic solutions aggressiveness, corrosion inhibitors use is considered to be one the most practical methods to delay metals dissolution in the said solutions. In this study benzimidazolyl derivative namely 2-cyanochalcones 2-(5-nitro-1,3-dihydrobenzimidazol-2-ylidene)-3-oxo-3-(2-oxo-2H-chromen-3-yl) propanenitrile which was synthesized was then applied as a corrosion inhibitor for copper in 1 M HNO3 solution. The inhibition action of this molecule was evaluated by gravimetric and density functional theory (DFT) methods. It was found experimentally that this compound has a better inhibition performance and its adsorption on copper surface follows Langmuir adsorption isotherm. This adsorption evolves with temperature and inhibitor concentration, it is endothermic and occurs spontaneously with an increase in disorder. Corrosion kinetic parameters analysis supported by Adejo-Ekwenchi model revealed the existence of both physisorption and chemisorption. DFT calculations related that compound adsorption on copper surface is due to its electron donating and accepting capacity. The reactive regions specifying the electrophilic and nucleophilic attack sites were analyzed using Fukui and dual descriptor functions. Experimental results obtained were compared with the theoretical findings.

This work is devoted to an experimental study of metallic pressure cooker insulated with kapok wool, a vegetal biodegradable fiber. Experiments conducted on the cooling of hot water in the equipment revealed very low heat losses and a time constant of 60 hours on average. As a result, the equipment makes it possible to finish cooking meals only thanks to the heat stored at the beginning of cooking and keeps cooked dishes warm for long hours. The thermal phase shift of the pressure cooker is around 7?h. Cooking tests conducted on some local dishes revealed about 70% butane gas savings for cooking cowpea and white rice, 38% for cooking fatty rice, 75% for pasta and couscous, and 30% for cooking potato stew. These results show that this technology can contribute to minimizing?energy consumption in the restaurant sector.

Preparation and Characterization of Activated Carbon Based on Wood (Acacia auriculeaformis, Côte d’Ivoire)

The objective of this work is to prepare one of the best activated carbon (CA) based on wood (Acacia auriculeaformis). The chemical activation method was used for varying the chemical agent namely phosphoric acid H3PO4 (CAA), sodium hydroxide NaOH (CAB), and sodium chloride NaCl (CAS). The physico-chemical analysis of the three activated carbons indicated that, under the conditions of preparation, the activated carbons possess activation efficiencies lower than 50% (41.81% for CAA, 26.25% for CAB and 48.87% for CAS), low ash content (CAA: 5.00%, CAB: 14.90 and CAS: 6.60%) and iodine values ranging from 190.35 mg/g to 380.71 mg/g, suggesting that the good quality of the prepared activated carbon. The surface functional groups using Boehm test and the zero point charge (pHZPC) methods confirmed the acidic, basic and neutral character for CAA, CAB and CAS respectively (CAA: pHZPC = 4.8, CAB: pHZPC = 8.2, CAS: pHZPC = 6.8). The surface specific areas were determined through the liquid phase adsorption of acetic acid and methylene blue using the Langmuir method and BET analysis. Also, the porosity was determined. The BET surface areas of CAA, CAB and CAS were respectively 561.60 m2/g, 265.00 m2/g and 395.40 m2/g. The influence of chemical activation agent on pores formation was confirmed by scanning electron microscopic (SEM) analysis. CAA was selected as the best activated carbon because of its good surface area and good pore volume compared to those found in the literature. Therefore, its application as an adsorbent for effluents treatment could be explored. In addition, the best activating agent for coal from Acacia auriculeaformis was found to be phosphoric acid.

Sanitation by-products (i.e. greywater, human urine and toilet compost) reuse for agriculture presents an opportunity to enhance food security while overcoming water scarcity and fertilizers issues in developing countries. However, the risks to health from farmers and consumers’ exposure to pathogenic micro-organisms persistent in sanitation by-products has hindered their popularity in these regions. This study was conducted to apply a quantitative microbial risk assessment to estimate the annual risk probability of Salmonella infection associated with these sanitation by-products reuse for lettuce production and explore options for health risk reduction. Risk was performed a Monte Carlo simulation for farmers and consumers. The exposure routes were contaminated soil ingestion, urine/greywater/compost ingestion and lettuce consumption without washing. Results showed that the annual infection risks of Salmonella through ingestion contaminated soil associated with urine and compost were typical scenario: 9.04 × per-person-per-year (pppy) and 2.97 × pppy, respectively, are higher than the WHO benchmark (≤1.0 × pppy). The objective of this study is to develop carbon, that of Acacia auriculeaformis through its activation in order to eliminate lead in an aqueous medium. A series of activated carbon has been prepared by chemical activation with phosphoric acid, sodium hydroxide and sodium chloride. The determination of the physico-chemical properties of the prepared carbon guided the choice of phosphoric acid activated carbon as the best adsorbent for the elimination of lead(II) in an aqueous solution. Pb2+ adsorption tests in batch mode have shown that the adsorption capacity is influenced by various parameters such as mass, pH, concentration of Pb2+ ions and contact time linked to the medium and the adsorbent. Adsorption isotherms, kinetic models and thermodynamics have been used to describe the adsorption process. The equilibrium data for activated charcoal correspond well to the model of Freundlich, Langmuir, Temkin and Kiselev. The kinetic adsorption data proved to be better described by the pseudo-second order model with external and intraparticle diffusion which are two decisive steps in the adsorption process of Pb2+ ions. Laterite, Sandstone and Shale as Adsorbents for the Removal of Arsenic from Water

This study aims at exploring arsenite (As (III)) removal from water using naturally available rocks (laterite, sandstone and shale) in C?te d’Ivoire. The study focused on the adsorbent dose, operating pH, contact time, initial arsenite concentration, and modelisation on the removal of arsenite by performing batch adsorption experiment with well water. The optimal dosage related to an initial As (III) concentration of 5 mg/L was about 50, 75 and 145 g/L for laterite, sandstone and shale respectively. Laterite has a better adsorption capacity in comparison to sandstone and shale. On the other hand, kinetic study reveals that the equilibrium times are 5 h for laterite, 3 h for sandstone and 8 h for shale. Results showed that laterite, sandstone and shale could remove the arsenic in groundwater at initial arsenic concentrations below 5 mg/L, satisfying the World Health Organization (WHO) standard for drinking water. Moreover, kinetics study showed that the overall adsorption rate of arsenite was described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model.

Assessment of Wastewater Management and Health Impacts in African Secondary Cities: Case of Dimbokro (Côte D’Ivoire)

The majority of population growth in developing countries will occur in secondary cities where there is limited access to clean water and sanitation. Wastewater management priorities in these cities will be different from those in larger cities and developed countries. For this reason, it is important to assess wastewater management in these cities of sub-Saharan Africa. This study assessed clean water supply, wastewater and faecal sludge management and associated health risks in Dimbokro, C?te D’Ivoire. The study was performed in March 2015 in 12 neighborhoods with a total of 703 households. In these neighborhoods, the questions were addressed and discussed with household head. The study revealed that the households of the city were structured on three topology habitats: residential (5%), economic (42%) and evolutive or yards housing (53%). For water supply, 99.4% of the households used water from SODECI, the local public water supply network, while the remaining 0.6% of surveyed household obtained water from wells. Domestic wastewater, used for doing laundry, dishwashing and showering, was disposed of in the following ways: directly into the street (33%), septic tank (23%), backyards (18%), storm drain (16%), sewer network (6%), pit latrine (3%) or into soakaway (2%). In addition, untreated wastewater was sometimes discharged into the N’Ziriver by certain households. 52% of households surveyed emptied latrines manually and 48 % used mechanic drain services. The most frequent diseases occurring in the households were Malaria (63%), Diarrhoea (13%) and Typhoid fever (9%) in the households of the city. In the light of this study, the municipal authorities of Dimbokro should provide the city with wastewater systems that drain to a central outlet system where the waste-water can be easily treated before final disposal for reuse in agriculture.

The Pericarditis in CHU of Point G and Luxembourg: Clinical Aspects and Etiologies

The authors bring back 70 cases of pericarditis brought together between 2012 and 2017 in the service of surgery B of the CHU Point G and to the Hospital Mother-Child, the Luxembourg in Mali. The average age of the patients is 31.5 years with extremes of 2 years and 84 years. The tubercular etiology widely comes to mind with 49 cases. The diagnostic contributions of the echocardiography are analyzed. The accent is put on good tolerance hemodynamic of the tubercular pericarditis. The forecast depends essentially on the etiology and on the diagnostic delay;indeed the tamponade pericardium can be inaugural or complicated;the evolution of the pericarditis is burdened of a heavy mortality (4.2% in our series). On the other hand the passage in the chronicity complicates essentially pericarditis seen late (8.6% in our series).

Structural and Thermomechanical Study of Plastic Films Made from Cassava-Starch Reinforced with Kaolin and Metakaolin

The structural and thermomechanical properties of starch-based plastic films reinforced with kaolin and metakaolin have been studied by various techniques (X-ray diffraction, IR-TF spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, tensile tests, and thermal resistance). The results obtained showed that kaolin, an inert material, prevents the starch from losing its granular structure and to solubilize during the heating, generating plastic films of low Young’s modulus (7 MPa). On the other hand, metakaolin, an amorphous and dehydroxylated material obtained after heating of kaolin at 700°C for 1 hour, substantially improves the thermomechanical properties of the plastic films. The Young’s modulus increases from 19 MPa to 25 MPa while the thermal resistance increases from 90°C to 120°C. This was attributed to good dispersion of the metakaolin in the polymer matrix after the loss of the granular structure of the starch during heating.
