Effectiveness of a fixed-depth sensor deployed from a buoy to estimate water-column cyanobacterial biomass depends on wind speed

Water quality sondes have the advantage of containing multiple sensors,extended deployment times,high temporal resolution,and telecommunication with stakeholder accessible data ***,sondes that are part of buoy deployments often suffer from typically being fixed at one *** water treatment plants are interested in water quality at a depth of the water intake and other stakeholders(*** and swimmers)are interested in the surface,we examined whether a fixed depth of approximately 1 m could cause over-or under-estimation of cyanobacterial *** sampled the vertical distribution of cyanobacteria adjacent to a water quality sonde buoy in the western basin of Lake Erie during the summers of 2015–2017.A comparison of buoy cyanobacteria RFU(Relative Fluorescence Unit)at 1 m to cyanobacteria chlorophyll a(chla)measured throughout the water column showed occurrences when the buoy both under and overestimated the cyanobacteria chl a at specific *** differences between buoy measurements and at-depth grab samples occurred during low wind speeds(because low winds allowed cyanobacteria to accumulate at the surface above the buoy’s *** wind speeds(>4.5 m/sec)resulted in better agreement between the buoy and at-depth *** wind speeds 12 hr before sample collection decreased the difference between the buoy and at-depth samples for high wind speeds but not low *** suggest that sondes should be placed at a depth of interest for the appropriate stakeholder group or deploy sondes with the ability to sample at various depths.

Prolonged Opioid-Sparing Pain Control after Hemorrhoidectomy with Liposome bupivacaine: Results from a Cohort of 95 Patients

The objective of this retrospective study was to examine the effects of an intraoperative injection of liposome bupivacaine on the quality and duration of postsurgical pain control, patient satisfaction, and opioid use in a cohort of patients undergoing hemorrhoidectomy in an outpatient setting. Patients underwent ambulatory hemorrhoidectomy conducted by a single surgeon. Liposome bupivacaine 266 mg/20 mL was administered via infiltration at the end of surgery. After discharge, pain-related outcomes were assessed via telephone interviews. Outcomes of interest included first onset of pain after surgery, patient-reported pain intensity (0 = no pain;10 = worst pain imaginable), time to first use of orally administered opioids after surgery, number of opioid tablets consumed postsurgery, and patient’s satisfaction with postsurgical pain control. A total of 95 patients were included;the average number of hemorrhoids excised was 3.0 (median, 2.7) per patient. Mean time to first onset of pain after surgery was 36 hours;mean time to first consumption of postsurgical opioids was 38 hours. Mean pain intensity scores remained ber of opioid analgesic tablets consumed after surgery was 12.4;13% (12/95) of patients required no postsurgical opioids. Seventy-five percent of patients reported being “very satisfied” or “perfectly satisfied” with their overall pain control. No liposome bupivacaine-related adverse events were observed. A single intraoperative injection of liposome bupivacaine safely facilitated ambulatory hemorrhoidectomy, eliminated the need for intravenous opioids, minimized opioid use, and was associated with high levels of patient satisfaction.

In this paper,we address the complex problem of dock-door assignment and truck scheduling within cross-docking *** is a problem that requires frequent resolution throughout the operational day,as disruptions often invalidate the optimal *** the problem's highly combinatorial nature,finding an optimal solution demands significant computational time and ***,the distribution of data across problem instances over a lengthy planning horizon remains consistently stable,with minimal concern regarding distribution *** factors collectively establish the problem as an ideal candidate for a learn-to-optimize solution *** propose a Dantzig-Wolfe reformulation,solving it via both a conventional branch-and-price approach and a neural branch-and-price approach,the latter of which employs imitation ***,we introduce some classes of valid inequalities to enhance and refine the pricing problem through a branch-and-cut *** computational experiments demonstrate that this methodology is not only feasible but also presents a viable alternative to the traditional branch-and-price algorithms typically utilized for such challenges.

Sesbania virgata（Cav.） *** a pioneer species native to South America able to release allelochemicals that affect germination and development of other plant *** aim of this work was to evaluate the allelopathic effect of *** on the germination and development of co-occurring species from gallery forest and on agronomic *** forest native species,Enterolobium contortisiliquum（Vell.） Morong and Sapindus saponaria L.,and two agronomic species（these as control）,Oryza sativa *** Solanum lycopersicum *** used in the lab and greenhouse assays with seeds and leaf extracts of *** species were more affected than native species when co-germinated with seeds of *** germination percentage and speed germination index of the agronomic species were reduced in both in vitro and greenhouse *** the same assays,the seeds of native species showed no significant differences in the parameters ***,the initial growth of the four species assayed was affected,with reduction in plant length and shoot diameter followed by significant reduction in plantlet shoot and root *** the assays with irrigation of *** leaf extracts,no significant inhibitory effects on germination were observed for all *** and shoot diameter of the native species were not affected by the leaf extracts,nor were fresh and dry ***,these parameters increased in the agronomic species as they were irrigated with leaf *** on our data we conclude that seed leachates of *** affect germination and seedling development of other species,suggesting that its invasive behavior is due mainly to seed *** with less pronounced effects on native species,allelopathy of *** might also influence Interspecific competition in its natural environment.

Objective The present study evaluated the antinociceptive activity of Calendula officinalis L.(Ca)cream on inflammatory *** Creams with different Ca concentrations were tested for their ability to ameliorate pain-related behavior and edema in rats using formalin test,carrageenan(Cg)-induced acute inflammation model,bradykinin(bK)-induced acute inflammation model,and complete Freund’s adjuvant(CFA)-induced chronic inflammation *** the formalin test,we also examined the implication of peripheral opioid receptors in the antinociceptive mechanisms of Ca cream,by means of Q-naloxone,a peripherally acting nonselective opioid ***,the effects of Ca cream compared with diclofenac on bK-induced edema were examined when the kininase II in tissue was preserved or inhibited by *** local production of redox biomarkers in formalin model,tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α)in Cg model and histopathological changes in CFA model were also *** A single application of Ca cream at a dose of 10%or 30%(w/w)decreased the formalin-induced licking/biting behavior during both phases of this test in a Q-naloxone-sensitive *** effect was associated with the reduction of oxidative stress in the injured paw and the edema associated with the later phase of formalin-induced pain.A single application of Ca cream(10%or 30%)reduced paw edema and thermal hypernociception in Cg-induced acute inflammation,corresponding with a local decrease in TNF-α.Ca cream also inhibited bK-induced spontaneous nociceptive behavior and paw inflammation in both paradigms *** applications of Ca cream also decreased CFA-induced chronic inflammation,mechanical hypernociception and histopathological changes in the *** These results reveal the topical antinociceptive and antiedematogenic effects of Ca cream.A modulatory action on peripheral opioid receptors associated with its antioxidant mechanism may be involved,at least in par

Neurosurgical treatment for addiction: lessons from an untold story in China and a path forward

Addiction is a major public-health crisis associated with significant disability and mortality. Although various pharmacological and behavioral treatments are currently available, the clinical efficacy of these treatments is limited. Given this situation, there is a growing interest in finding an effective neurosurgical treatment for addiction. First, we discuss the use of ablative surgery in treating addiction. We focus on the rise and fall of nucleus accumbens ablation for addiction in China. Subsequently, we review recent studies that have explored the efficacy and safety of deep-brain-stimulation treatment for addiction. We conclude that neurosurgical procedures, particularly deep-brain stimulation, have a potentially valuable role in the management of otherwise intractable addictive disorders. Larger well-controlled clinical trials, however, are needed to assess clinical efficacy and safety. We end by discussing several key issues involved in this clinical field and identifying some areas of progress.
