Investigation on the Use of the Weakly Basic Polyacrylate Anion-Exchanger Amberlite IRA-68 for Sorption and Separation of Iminodiacetate Complexes of Rare Earth Elements

Based on the determined affinity series of rare earth element complexes with IMDA for the anion-exchangers, purification of macroquantities of Nd 3+ from Y 3+, Sm 3+ from Ho 3+, La 3+ from Nd 3+ and La 3+ from Pr 3+ on the weakly basic gel anion-exchanger Amberlite IRA-68 was studied. Using the presented method on 1 L of Amberlite IRA-68 in the acetate form, it is possible to obtain about 240 g Nd 2O 3 purified from Y 2O 3. Great difference in affinity of La 3+ and Nd 3+ as well as Pr 3+ complexes for this anion-exchanger in the acetate form indicates the possibility of applying this process for purification of lanthanum on the increased scale. On 1 L of Amberilte IRA-68 in the acetate form it is possible to obtain about 1125 g La 2O 3 purified from Nd 2O 3. On the basis of these results it can be assumed that unique properties of polyacrylate anion-exchangers enable their application for separation of rare earth elements.

This study aimed to obtain, by selection two lines of New Zealand white rabbits differing in total motor activity and to compare them for fertility, prolificacy, mortality and weight gains of young rabbits from birth until weaning. The emotional states of animals such as fear were analysed with the behavioural tests （open field, tonic immobility） and stress-induced hyperthermia （SIH）. These tests were the criterion for assigning animals to two experimental groups： group I, 10 males and 20 females with the highest total motor activity （A）; group II, 10 males and 20 females showing little or no motor activity （N）. Important differences were found in male and female fertility. During the first week, 80% of males mated in group I compared to only 20% in group II. Despite their normal breeding condition, passive males were timid and ponderous during mating, unlike active males which mated willingly and rapidly. Fertility was high in both groups （87.5% and 94.7% in group I and II）. Unlike females from group II, females from group I showed no tendency towards nest building. 40% of females from group I gave birth in different cage areas, while 90% of females from group II gave birth in nest boxes with down and straw bedding. No differences were found between the active and passive lines for body weight at birth or at 35 days of age.

AIM： To screen for genes related to metabotropic re- ceptors that might be involved in the development of chronic hepatitis. METHODS： Assessment of 20 genes associated with metabotropic receptors was performed in liver speci- mens obtained by punch biopsy from 12 patients with autoimmune and chronic hepatitis type B and C. For this purpose, a microarray with low integrity grade and with oligonucleotide DNA probes complementary to target transcripts was used. Evaluation of gene expression was performed in relation to transcript level, correlation between samples and grouping of clinical parameters used in chronic hepatitis assessment. Clini- cal markers of chronic hepatitis included alanine and aspartate aminotransferase, ~,-glutamyltranspeptidase, alkaline phosphatase and cholinesterase activity, levels of iron ions, total cholesterol, triglycerides, albumin, glucose, hemoglobin, platelets, histological analysis of inflammatory and necrotic status, fibrosis according to METAVIR score, steatosis, as well as anthropometric body mass index, waist/hip index, percentage of adi- pose tissue and liver size in ultrasound examination. Gender, age, concomitant diseases and drugs were also taken into account. Validation of oligonucleotide microarray gene expression results was done with the use of quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction （qRT-PCR）. RESULTS： The highest （0.002 〈 P 〈 0.046） expres- sion among genes encoding main components of metabotropic receptor pathways, such as the a subunit of G-coupled protein, phosphoinositol-dependent pro- tein kinase or arrestin was comparable to that of an- giotensinogen synthesized in the liver. Carcinogenesis suppressor genes, such as chemokine ligand 4, tran- scription factor early growth response protein 1 and lysophosphatidic acid receptor, were characterized by the lowest expression （0.002 〈 P 〈 0.046）, while the factor potentially triggering hepatic cancer, transcrip- tion factor JUN-B, had a 20-fold higher expression. The aim of this study was to analyze motives for engaging in physical activity and to determine and describe motivational differences related to gender, age and body mass index in adolescents and young adults. For health promotion, it is necessary to understand the factors that serve as motivators of physical activity for these age groups. Eight hundred and fourteen participants aged 14-26 years （mean age = 19.83） participated in the study＇s survey and completed the MPAM-R （motives for physical activity Measure-Revised） scale to measure five different motives that were posited to lead youth to engage in physical activity. The most important and the most frequently mentioned motive for participation in females＇ favorite physical activity was fitness, followed by appearance. For male participants, the most frequently cited and important motivational factor for engaging in physical activity was fitness, followed by interest and enjoyment. For young females as well as for young males, the motive of fitness was more important than it was for adolescent girls and boys. For overweight participants, the motive of maintaining a certain appearance was very important. Understanding motivation is a key in persuading students to engage in physical activity. Although intrinsic motivation is not the most frequently mentioned motive, physical education teachers should stress appearance as a benefit of regular physical activity participation.

In researches that examine neuroplasticity, many studies that are performed directly on isolated neurons in the pyramidal cells of CA1 area (CA1) and slices of the hippocampus indicate that changes occur at the molecular and cellular levels during long-term synaptic potentiation (LTP), and these changes are dependent on N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) acid receptors and/or purinergic receptors. Electrophysiological studies and the chemical induction of LTP of synaptic neurotransmissions provide key evidence that LTP is dependent on the volume of Ca2+ influx through postsynaptic NMDA receptors, in addition to the subsequent activation and autophosphorylation of Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CaMKII) and the increase in the density of α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid (AMPA) receptors on postsynaptic neuronal membranes. The primary peculiarity of LTP in the central nervous system (CNS) excitatory synapses is the synthesis of additional AMPA receptors in the postsynaptic elements. Furthermore, the proteolysis of the extracellular matrix (ECM) has an important role in the synaptic neuroplasticity of the CNS. Proteases from the serine family and metalloproteinases of the extracellular matrix are localized within the synapses and are released into the extracellular space in proportion to the degree of neuronal excitation. These enzymes cause changes in the morphology, shape and size, as well as the overall number of synapses and synthesize new synaptic connections. The proteinases also change the function of receptors, and consequently, the secretions of neurotransmitters from the presynaptic elements are strengthened or weakened.

The aim of the work was to quantify possible interactions between surfactants and preservatives, comparing surface properties, in model pharmaceutical formulations. Surface parameters of 2-component surfactant-preservative aquous mixtures were determined with a Wilhelmy plate technique, for the so-called principal surfactants (polysorbate 80, egg lecithin, phosphatidylcholine) and preservatives, which were methylparaben and benzalkonium chloride (BA-C). A generalized surface tension vs. surfactant concentration plot signatures, in the presence of preservative at a fixed amount, allowed: the critical micellar concentration (cmc) shift, additive molecules partition from the surface to the bulk, mixed micelles formation concentration, and additive surface removal concentration to be determined in reference to surface activity of the added substance. Methylparaben is a compound of lower (in comparison to BAC) surface activity, lower partitioning coefficient possessing lower energy and concentration of its removal from the surface, that makes it play effectively an antimicrobial protection role in the bulk of pharmaceutical products, as already shown by chemical tests.
