Background The plastic scintillator detector(PSD)is one of the detectors in the high energy cosmic radiation detection(HERD)facility,which is designed for gamma-ray detection and a redundant charge *** will lead to a decrease in PSD’s performance of gamma-ray detection and charge measurement,which should be carefully *** Two preliminary segmentation schemes of the PSD and two veto strategies have been proposed to suppress the backsplash *** this paper,we focus on the influence of the backsplash caused by gamma *** gamma-ray trigger efficiency and identification efficiency were studied in the case of different cell sizes and veto strategies,which can provide guidance on the PSD *** A Monte Carlo simulation based on Geant4 has been *** simplify the simulation,the PSD is segmented into 1 cm3 cubes which can be easily aggregated into cells with different sizes during *** and conclusion Side_Veto can be used as a baseline design of veto strategy,whereas Smart_Veto can be selected as an upgraded *** the PSD bar cell with a width of less than 11 cm and the PSD tile cell with a width of less than 20 cm can achieve a sufficiently high gamma-ray trigger efficiency(>80%),which realizes the primary goal of the ***,both the PSD bar cell with a width of less than 3 cm and the PSD tile cell with a width of less than 20 cm can ensure a sufficiently high gamma-ray identification efficiency(>80%)for photons up to 800 GeV.

The DArk Matter Particle Explorer(DAMPE)is a satellite-borne detector for high-energy cosmic rays and *** fully understand the detector performance and obtain reliable physical results,extensive simulations of the detector are *** simulations are particularly important for the data analysis of cosmic ray nuclei,which relies closely on the hadronic and nuclear interactions of particles in the detector *** adopted simulation softwares include the GEANT4 and FLUKA,both of which have been implemented for the DAMPE simulation *** we describe the simulation tool of DAMPE and compare the results of proton shower properties in the calorimeter from the two simulation *** a comparison gives an estimate of the most significant uncertainties of our proton spectral analysis.

Carcinosarcoma(CS),also known as metaplastic breast carcinoma with mesenchymal differentiation,is one of the five distinct subtypes of metaplastic breast *** is considered as a mixed,biphasic neoplasm consisting of a carcinomatous component combined with a malignant nonepithelial element of mesenchymal origin without an intermediate transition *** cellular origin of this neoplasm remains controversial,most researchers declare that neoplastic cells derive from a cellular structure with potential biphasic *** recent research on the therapeutic strategies against CS neoplastic disorders,surgical resection appears the only potentially curative *** CS metastasize by the lymphatic route,axillary assessment with sentinel lymph node biopsy and/or axillary lymph node dissection is always ***,the tumor also presents a hematogenous metastatic pattern including pleural,pulmonary,liver,brain and less commonly bone ***,surgical removal of breast CS does not necessarily ensure patient’s long-term ***,alternative therapies,such as radio-and chemotherapy proved insufficient and 5-year survival rate is ***,there is evidence that following surgery,the combination of radio and chemotherapy is associated with a better prognosis than either treatment *** aim of this review is to evaluate the results of surgical treatment for breast CS with special reference to the extent of its histological *** features,histogenesis,morphological and immunochemical findings are discussed,while the role of current diagnostic and therapeutic management of this aggressive neoplasm is emphasized.

Topographic and climatic effects on Pinus halepensis s.l. growth at its drought tolerance margins under climatic change

Under global warming,drought will reduce productivity of Pinus halepensis s.l.(subspecies halepensis and brutia)and cause a retreat from its rear edge distribu-tion(latitudinal/elevational)in the *** test whether topography can influence this scenario,we studied for approximately 40 years the growth of six natural pine stands in water-limited habitats on the islands of Zakinthos and Samos(eastern Mediterranean Greece),and determined the critical moisture sources that drove pine ***-nant pines were selected with no permanent water sources under contrasting moisture conditions created by topogra-phy(“wet”-gulley/valley vs.“dry”-upslope habitats).The responses of *** *** drought under a moderate and a worst case scenario were tested,projected under global warming(approx.-25%and 40%in annual precipitation compared to 1961–1990 average).Our results show that“wet”habitat pines had higher productivity under normal to wet ***,the more precipitation declined,“wet”habitat tree growth was reduced at a significantly faster rate,but also showed a faster recovery,once rainfall ***,Pinus halepensis *** in gullies/valleys,may be more drought resilient and less likely to retreat towards higher elevation/latitudes under global warm-ing,compared to pines on dry upslope *** moderate drought,both ecosystems relied on deeper moisture pools supplied by rainfall of the previous 3–6 years(including the year of growth).However,valley/gully habitat pines on significantly deeper soils(and probably on deeper heavily weathered bedrock),appeared to utilize surface moisture from winter/spring rainfall more efficiently for survival and ***,deep soils may provide the key“buffer”for pine survival in such ecosystems that could act as potential refugia for *** *** climate change.

Smoothing Non-Stationary Time Series Using the Discrete Cosine Transform

This paper considers the problem of smoothing a non-stationary time series(having either deterministic and/or stochastic trends) using the discrete cosine transform(DCT).The DCT is a powerful tool which has found fruitful applications in filtering and smoothing as it can closely approximate the optimal Karhunen-Loeve transform(KLT).In fact,it is known that it almost corresponds to the KLT for first-order autoregressive processes with a root close to unity:This is the case with most economic and financial time series.A number of new results are derived in the paper:(a) The explicit form of the linear smoother based on the DCT,which is found to have time-varying weights and that uses all observations;(b) the extrapolation of the DCT-smoothed series;(c) the form of the average frequency response function,which is shown to approximate the frequency response of the ideal low pass filter;(d) the asymptotic distribution of the DCT coefficients under the assumptions of deterministic or stochastic trends;(e) two news method for selecting an appropriate degree of smoothing,in general and under the assumptions in(d).These findings are applied and illustrated using several real world economic and financial time *** results indicate that the DCT-based smoother that is proposed can find many useful applications in economic and financial time series.

Additive manufacturing of antibacterial PLA-ZnO nanocomposites:Benefits,limitations and open challenges

Polymeric biomaterials such as polylactic acid(PLA)play a prominent role in the advancement of biomedical additive manufacturing(AM).PLA offers indeed a very advantageous combination of thermomechanical properties and functional attributes,as it is biobased,biodegradable,biocompatible and easy to ***,PLA can be damaged by common sterilization methods and is sensitive to most chemical disinfectants,and this may impair its widespread *** of the most promising ways to overcome this shortcoming is to provide PLA with embedded antibacterial activity by the addition of appropriate fillers such as zinc oxide(Zn O)*** a detailed introduction to the basic properties of PLA and ZnO nanoparticles,the present review analyzes the main variables that govern the antibacterial activity of PLA-ZnO *** applications and related manufacturing processes are also presented to showcase the importance of having embedded antibacterial functions in demanding applications such as food packaging and wound *** is then placed on the emerging literature of the AM of PLA-ZnO nanocomposites,with a focus on fused filament fabrication(also known as fused deposition modeling).Existing gaps and hurdles related to the development and 3D printing of such composites is critically *** is envisioned that a deeper understanding of the processability,thermo-mechanical behavior,biocompatibility and antibacterial efficacy of additively manufactured PLAZnO nanocomposites will foster their adoption in the biomedical field and,ultimately,in all circumstances where it is crucial to limit infection transmission.

Surgical meshes have been employed in the management of a variety of pathological conditions including hernia,pelvic floor dysfunctions,periodontal guided bone regeneration,wound healing and more recently for breast plastic surgery after *** common pathologies affect a wide portion of the worldwide population;therefore,an effective and enhanced treatment is crucial to ameliorate patients’living conditions both from medical and aesthetic points of *** present,non-absorbable synthetic polymers are the most widely used class of biomaterials for the manufacturing of mesh implants for hernia,pelvic floor dysfunctions and guided bone regeneration,with polypropylene and poly tetrafluoroethylene being the most *** prostheses,such as surgical grafts,have been employed mainly for breast plastic surgery and wound healing *** the advantages of mesh implants to the treatment of these conditions,there are still many drawbacks,mainly related to the arising of a huge number of post-operative complications,among which infections are the most *** a mesh that could appropriately integrate with the native tissue,promote its healing and constructive remodelling,is the key aim of ongoing research in the area of surgical mesh *** this end,the adoption of new biomaterials including absorbable and natural polymers,the use of drugs and advanced manufacturing technologies,such as 3D printing and electrospinning,are under investigation to address the previously mentioned challenges and improve the outcomes of future clinical *** aim of this work is to review the key advantages and disadvantages related to the use of surgical meshes,the main issues characterizing each clinical procedure and the future directions in terms of both novel manufacturing technologies and latest regulatory considerations.
