Impeded Carbohydrate Metabolism in Rice Plants under Submergence Stress

The detrimental effects of submergence on physiological performances of some rice varieties with special references to carbohydrate metabolisms and their allied enzymes during post-flowering stages have been documented and clarified in the present investigation. It was found that photosynthetic rate and concomitant translocation of sugars into the panicles were both related to the yield. The detrimental effects of the complete submergence were recorded in generation of sucrose, starch, sucrose phosphate synthase and phosphorylase activity in the developing panicles of the plants as compared to those under normal or control （i.e. non-submerged） condition. The accumulation of starch was significantly lower in plants under submergence and that was correlated with ADP-glucose pyrophosphorylase activity. Photosynthetic rate was most affected under submergence in varying days of post-flowering and was also related to the down regulation of Ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase activity. However, under normal or control condition, there recorded a steady maintenance of photosynthetic rate at the post-flowering stages and significantly higher values of Ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase activity. Still, photosynthetic rate of the plants under both control and submerged conditions had hardly any significant correlation with sugar accumulation and other enzymes of carbohydrate metabolism like invertase with grain yield. Finally, plants under submergence suffered significant loss of yield by poor grain filling which was related to impeded carbohydrate metabolism in the tissues. It is evident that loss of yield under submergence is attributed both by lower sink size or sink capacity （number of panicles, in this case） as well as subdued carbohydrate metabolism in plants and its subsequent partitioning into the grains.

Computing has become more invisible, widespread and ubiquitoussince the inception of the Internet of Things (IoT) and Web of Things. Multipledevices that surround us meet user’s requirements everywhere. Multiple Middleware Framework (MF) designs have come into existence because of the rapiddevelopment of interactive services in Heterogeneous Systems. This resulted inthe delivery of interactive services throughout Heterogeneous Environments(HE). Users are given free navigation between devices in a widespread environment and continuously interact with each other from any chosen device. Numerous interactive devices with recent interactive platforms (for example, SmartPhones, Mobile Phones, Personal Computer (PC) and Personal Digital Assistant(PDA)) are available in the market. For easy access to information and servicesirrespective of the device used for working and even at the drastic change ofthe environment, the execution of applications on a broad spectrum of computingdevices is propelled by the availability of the above-mentioned platforms. Different applications that need interoperability to coordinate and correspond with eachother should be facilitated. Using a standard interface and data format, HE mustlink various devices from various platforms together to communicate with eachother. To aid the interactive services performed by a middleware framework thatoperates on Application Programming Interface (API) over HEs, this issue aims toendorse an Adaptable Service Application Programming Interface (ASAPI).

All-Optical 3:8 Decoder with the Help of Terahertz Optical Asymmetric Demultiplexer

An all-optical 3:8 decoder unit with the help of terahertz optical asymmetric demultiplexer (TOAD) is proposed. The all-optical 3:8 decoder unit with a set of all-optical full-adders and optical exclusive-ORs (XORs), can be used to perform a fast central processor unit using optical hardware components. We try to exploit the advantages of TOAD-based optical switch to design an integrated all-optical circuit which can perform decoding of signal. A theoretical model is presented and verified through numerical simulation. The new method promises both higher processing speed and accuracy. The model can be extended for studying more complex all-optical circuit of enhanced functionality in which decoder is the basic building block. The operation of the proposed circuit is parallel in nature. The impact of the switching energy with small signal gain and variation of extinction ratio and contrast ration with control pulse energy of the switching outcome is explored and assessed by means of numerical simulations.

Optical Arithmetic Operation Using Optical Demultiplexer

Using Terahertz Optical Asymmetric Demultiplexer (TOAD) based switch we have designed all-optical parallel half adder and full adder. The approach to design this all-optical arithmetic circuit not only enhances the computational speed but also is capable of synthesizing light as input to produce desire output. The main advantage of parallel circuit is synchronization of input which is not required. All the circuits are designed theoretically and verified through numerical simulations.

Change Detection of Land Use and Land Cover over a Period of 20 Years in Papua New Guinea

People have an inherent tenacity to throng coastal regions in pursuit of better living conditions. As such the brisk dynamism of land use/land cover activities in a coastal region becomes obvious. The former keeps changing rapidly due to burgeoning population. A digital change detection analysis is performed with the help of Geographic Information System (GIS) on the Remote Sensing data spanning over last 20 years, complemented by in-situ data and ground truth information. This current research briefly endeavours to find out the nature of change happening in the major three coastal cities of Papua New Guinea (PNG), namely Alotau, capital of Milnebay province;Lae, capital of Morobe province and Port Moresby, capital of Papua New Guinea. Changes in land use and land cover that took place over 20 years have been recorded using Landsat 5 thematic mapper (TM) data of 1992 and Landsat 8 operational land imager (OLI) data. Land use and land cover maps of 1992, and 2013/14, and change detection matrix of 1992-2013/14 are derived. Results show an immensely sprawling urban landscape, evincing about five times growth during 1992 to 2014. At the same time “natural forests” dwindled by 444.96 hectares in Alotau, 6977.25 hectares in Lae and “mangrove” and “grass/shrub land” decreased by 127.78 and 4859.39 hectares respectively around Port Moresby. The above changes owe to ever increasing population pressure, land tenure shift, agriculture and industrial development.

Expression of a Rice Chitinase Gene Enhances Antifungal Response in Transgenic Litchi (cv. Bedana)

To enhance the antifungal response of litchi, transferring rice chitinase gene under a maize-ubiquitin promoter along with its first intron into the zygotic embryos via Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated transformation generated transgenic plants. After co-cultivation for 2 days with recombinant Agrobacterium, zygotic embryos were transferred onto Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium consisted of MS salts and Gamborg (B5) vitamins with 2 mgl-1 2, 4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2, 4-D), 50 gl-1 sucrose and 8 gl-1 agar supplemented with 25 mgl-1 hygromycin and 400 mgl-1 cefotaxime. Embryos were selected passing through a series of MS modified media and the antibiotic resistant transgenic plantlets were analyzed. The integration and stability of the transgene was confirmed by PCR, RT-PCR, Southern blotting and by Western blot analyses. The transgenic plants exhibited higher chitinase activity than the non-transformed plants. The chitinase activity was also examined using the native polyacrylamide in-gel assay. These analyses indicated that the foreign gene was translated into the protein of expected molecular weight that showed chitinase activity. Following in-vitro inoculation of die-back, leaf spots and blight pathogen (Phomopsis sp.), the transgenic plants showed delayed onset of the disease and smaller lesions. The transgenic plants were adapted to the greenhouse and did not show any phenotypic alterations.

Analytical Solution to the One-Dimensional Advection-Diffusion Equation with Temporally Dependent Coefficients

In a one-dimensional advection-diffusion equation with temporally dependent coefficients three cases may arise: solute dispersion parameter is time dependent while the flow domain transporting the solutes is uniform, the former is uniform and the latter is time dependent and lastly the both parameters are time dependent. In the present work analytical solutions are obtained for the last case, studying the dispersion of continuous input point sources of uniform and increasing nature in an initially solute free semi-infinite domain. The solutions for the first two cases and for uniform dispersion along uniform flow are derived as particular cases. The dispersion parameter is not proportional to the velocity of the flow. The Laplace transformation technique is used. New space and time variables are introduced to get the solutions. The solutions in all possible combinations of increasing/decreasing temporal dependence are compared with each other with the help of graphs. It has been observed that the concentration attenuation with position and time is the fastest in case of decreasing dispersion in accelerating flow field.
