Species distribution modeling in regions of high need and limited data： waterfowl of China

Background: A number of conservation and societal issues require understanding how species are distributed on the landscape, yet ecologists are often faced with a lack of data to develop models at the resolution and extent desired, resulting in inefficient use of conservation *** a situation presented itself in our attempt to develop waterfowl distribution models as part of a multi-disciplinary team targeting the control of the highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza virus in ***: Faced with limited data, we built species distribution models using a habitat suitability approach for China's breeding and non-breeding(hereafter, wintering) *** extensive review of the literature was used to determine model parameters for habitat *** relationships were implemented in GIS using land cover *** models were validated using waterfowl census data, while breeding models, though developed for many species, were only validated for the one species with sufficient telemetry data ***: We developed suitability models for 42 waterfowl species(30 breeding and 39 wintering) at 1 km resolution for the extent of China, along with cumulative and genus level species richness *** season models showed highest waterfowl suitability in wetlands of the high-elevation west-central plateau and northeastern *** waterfowl suitability was highest in the lowland regions of southeastern *** measures indicated strong performance in predicting species *** our model outputs to China's protected areas indicated that breeding habitat was generally better covered than wintering habitat, and identified locations for which additional research and protection should be ***: These suitability models are the first available for many of China's waterfowl species, and have direct utility to conservation and habitat planning and prioritizing management of critically important

Background:While nest attentiveness plays a critical role in the reproductive success of avian species,nest attentiveness data with high temporal resolution is not available for many ***,improvements in both video monitoring and temperature logging devices present an opportunity to increase our understanding of this aspect of avian ***:To investigate nest attentiveness behaviors and evaluate these technologies,we monitored 13 nests across two Common Tern(Sterna hirundo)breeding colonies with a paired video camera-temperature logger approach,while monitoring 63 additional nests with temperature loggers *** occurred from May to August of 2017 on Poplar(Chesapeake Bay,Maryland,USA)and Skimmer Islands(Isle of Wight Bay,Maryland,USA).We examined data respective to four times of day:Morning(civil dawn‒11:59),Peak(12:00‒16:00),Cooling(16:01‒civil dusk),and Night(civil dusk‒civil dawn).Results:While successful nests had mostly short duration off-bouts and maintained consistent nest attentiveness throughout the day,failed nests had dramatic reductions in nest attentiveness during the Cooling and Night periods(p0.05),video-monitored nests did have significantly lower clutch sizes(p<0.05).Conclusions:The paired use of iButtons and video ca

Agro-ecological conditions associated with the spread and persistence of highly pathogenic avian inlfuenza （HPAI） are not well understood, but the trade of live poultry is suspected to be a major pathway. Although market chains of live bird trade have been studied through indirect means including interviews and questionnaires, direct methods have not been used to identify movements of individual poultry. To bridge the knowledge gap on quantitative movement and transportation of poultry, we introduced a novel approach for applying telemetry to document domestic duck movements from source farms at Poyang Lake, China. We deployed recently developed transmitters that record Global Positioning System （GPS） locations and send them through the Groupe Spécial Mobile （GSM） cellular telephone system. For the ifrst time, we were able to track individually marked ducks from 3 to 396 km from their origin to other farms, distribution facilities, or live bird markets. Our proof of concept test showed that the use of GPS-GSM transmitters may provide di-rect, quantitative information to document the movement of poultry and reveal their market chains. Our ifndings provide an initial indication of the complexity of source-market network connectivity and highlight the great potential for future telemetry studies in poultry network analyses.

Molecular therapy for hepatic injury and fibrosis:Where are we?

Hepatic fibrosis is a wound healing response, involving pathways of inflammation and fibrogenesis. In response to various insults, such as alcohol, ischemia, viral agents, and medications or hepatotoxins, hepatocyte damage will cause the release of cytokines and other soluble factors by Kupffer cells and other cell types in the liver. These factors lead to activation of hepatic stellate cells, which synthesize large amounts of extracellular matrix components. With chronic injury and fibrosis, liver architecture and metabolism are disrupted, eventually manifesting as cirrhosis and its complications. In addition to eliminating etiology, such as antiviral therapy and pharmacological intervention, it is encouraging that novel strategies are being developed to directly address hepatic injury and fibrosis at the subcellular and molecular levels. With improvement in understanding these mechanisms and pathways, key steps in injury, signaling, activation, and gene expression are being targeted by molecular modalities and other molecular or gene therapy approaches. This article intends to provide an update in terms of the current status of molecular therapy for hepatic injury and fibrosis and how far we are from clinical utilization of these new therapeutic modalities.

Mid-Term Review of ADEPT Metal-On-Metal Hip Prosthesis. Functional, Radiological and Metal Ion Analysis

Background: There is much interest regarding metal-on-metal implants in medical and general media. Much of this has been regarding failure of specific implant systems and metal ion toxicity. We present our early mid-term experience of the ADEPT metal-on-metal system which has both modular and non-modular hip options. Methods: Functional assessment, blood metal ion quantification, and radiographic analysis were performed for the modular and non-modular ADEPT variants. Fifty implants were implanted with a mean follow up time of 28 months. Unpaired t-tests were used to compare modular and resurfacing groups, standardised hip scores were used to compare function to conventional total hip arthroplasty. Results: Metal ion levels were significantly higher in modular prostheses compared to resurfacing implants, but not at “harmful” levels (as determined by a previous metal-on-metal implant recall). Functional outcomes were excellent and revision rates were lower than expected. Conclusions: At our institution we have good outcomes with the ADEPT hip prosthesis. Though patient selection and implant position are crucial, poor performance of metal-on-metal hip replacements is implant specific.

High resolution aerial photogrammetry based 3D mapping of fruit crop canopies for precision inputs management

Rapid and accurate canopy attributes estimation is highly critical in fruit crops production management as this information can be used for canopy and crop load management as well as to develop nutrient/chemical prescription application ***,the existing ground based canopy sensing and attribute estimation methods are laborious and often involve complexity with field data collection and *** methods can be subjec-tive as ***,this study explores aerial photogrammetry based method of tree–row–volume(TRV),leaf–wall–area(LWA),canopy volume(CV)and canopy cover(CC)esti-mation for grapevine and apple *** sensing data was collected using a con-sumer–grade small unmanned aerial system(UAS)with an RGB imaging sensor flying at different flight altitudes i.e.,15 m(Ground sampling distance,GSD=0.45 cm pixel^(-1) at 65°sensor inclination),30 m(0.90 and 0.85 cm pixel^(-1) at 65°and 75°,respectively),45 m(1.35 and 1.27 cm pixel^(-1) at 65°and 75°,respectively)and 60 m(1.81 and 1.69 cm pixel^(-1) at 65°and 75°,respectively).Crop surface model(CSM)was derived from such data to esti-mate canopy height,width and foliage vigor,which are further used to estimate TRV,LWA,CV and *** ground measured and aerial imagery estimated TRV had a strong relation-ship with the data collected at the lowest GSD within grapevine canopies(R^(2)=0.77 at 0.45 cm pixel^(-1)as well as for apple canopies(R^(2)=0.82 at 0.90 cm pixel^(-1).Similar trends were observed for the LWA(R^(2)=0.77 and 0.86),CV(R^(2)=0.43 and 0.64)and CC(R^(2)=0.61 and 0.68)estimates for grapevine and apple canopies,*** GSD(≥0.45 cm pixel^(-1) in grapevine and≥0.90 cm pixel^(-1) in apple)resulted in a weak relationship between ground measurements and aerial imagery data-based estimates for grapevines(R^(2)=0.36)and apple canopies(R^(2)=0.39–0.78).Overall,the aerial flights with lower GSD and double grid missions with RGB imaging sensor in 65°orientation aided in the develo

Cultivated potato is a clonally propagated autotetraploid species with a highly heterogeneous *** assemblies of six cultivars including two chromosome-scale phased genome assemblies revealed extensive allelic diversity,including altered coding and transcript sequences,preferential allele expression,and structural variation that collectively result in a highly complex transcriptome and predicted proteome,which are distributed across the homologous *** species contribute to the extensive allelic diversity in tetraploid cultivars,demonstrating ancestral introgressions predating modern breeding *** a clonally propagated autotetraploid that undergoes limited meiosis,dysfunctional and deleterious alleles are not purged in tetraploid *** a quarter of the loci bore mutations are predicted to have a high negative impact on protein function,complicating breeder’s efforts to reduce genetic *** StCDF1 locus controls maturity,and analysis of six tetraploid genomes revealed that 12 allelic variants of StCDF1 are correlated with maturity in a dosage-dependent *** of the complexity of the tetraploid potato genome with its rampant structural variation and embedded deleterious and dysfunctional alleles will be key not only to implementing precision breeding of tetraploid cultivars but also to the construction of homozygous,diploid potato germplasm containing favorable alleles to capitalize on heterosis in F1 hybrids.

The timing of fruit maturity is an important trait in sweet cherry production and *** variation for phenology of fruit maturity in sweet cherry appears to be under strong genetic control,but that control might be complicated by phenotypic instability across *** such genotype-by-environment interaction(G×E)is a common phenomenon in crop plants,knowledge about it is lacking for fruit maturity timing and other sweet cherry *** this study,1673 genome-wide SNP markers were used to estimate genomic relationships among 597 weakly pedigree-connected individuals evaluated over two seasons at three locations in Europe and one location in the USA,thus sampling eight‘environments’.The combined dataset enabled a single meta-analysis to investigate the environmental stability of genomic *** disequilibrium among marker loci declined rapidly with physical distance,and ordination of the relationship matrix suggested no strong structure among *** most parsimonious G×E model allowed heterogeneous genetic variance and pairwise covariances among ***-sense genomic heritability was very high(0.60–0.83),as was accuracy of predicted breeding values(>0.62).Average correlation of additive effects among environments was high(0.96)and breeding values were highly correlated across *** indicated that genomic models can be used in cherry to accurately predict date of fruit maturity for untested individuals in new *** G×E for this trait indicated that phenotypes of individuals will be stable across similar *** analyses for other sweet cherry traits,for which multiple years of data are commonly available among breeders and cultivar testers,would be informative for predicting performance of elite selections and cultivars in new environments.
