Electrolyte dependence for the electrochemical decarboxylation of medium-chain fatty acids (n-octanoic acid) into fuel on Pt electrode

The deoxygenation of organic acids, important biomass feedstocks and derivatives, to synthesize hydrocarbon products under mild electrochemical conditions, holds significant importance for the production of carbon-neutral biofuels. There is still limited research on the influential factors of the electrochemical decarboxylation reaction of medium-chain fatty acids. In this study, n-octanoic acid (OA) was chosen as the research subject to investigate the electrochemical decarboxylation behavior of OA on a platinum electrode, focusing on the influence of different alkali metal cations (Li^(+), Na^(+), K^(+)), common anions (SO^(4)^(2−), Cl^(−)), and electrolyte pH. It was found that KOH as an electrolyte exhibited the best performance for OA. Possibly, the larger size of K^(+) increased the alkalinity of the electrode surface, facilitating OA deprotonation. LiOH electrolyte reduced the solubility of OA, thereby inhibiting the decarboxylation reaction. SO^(4)^(2−) exhibited a weak promoting effect on the decarboxylation reaction of OA, while Cl^(−) showed no adverse effect although Cl^(−) may adsorb on the electrode surface. Furthermore, unlike short-chain fatty acids, medium-chain OA can only achieve efficient decarboxylation under alkaline conditions due to its solubility properties. This study provides references and foundations for future efforts to enhance the efficiency of electrochemical decarboxylation synthesis of hydrocarbon biofuels from medium-chain fatty acids.

Quantifying the sources of dissolved inorganic carbon within the sulfate-methane transition zone in nearshore sediments of Qi'ao Island, Pearl River Estuary, Southern China

The significance of the various biogeochemical pathways that drive carbon cycling and the relative fractions of dissolved inorganic carbon(DIC) produced by these reactions within the sulfate-methane transition zone(SMTZ) are still being debated. Unraveling these processes is important to our understanding of the benthic DIC sources and their contributions to the global carbon cycle. Here, we measure pore water geochemistry(chlorine, sulfate, methane, Ca^(2+), Mg^(2+), DIC and δ^(13)C-DIC) as well as solid geochemistry(sedimentary organic carbon(SOC) and δ^(13)C of SOC) in nearshore sediments from Qi'ao Island in the Pearl River Estuary of the Southern China Sea. Our analysis indicates that SOC originates from the mixing of carbon from terrestrial and marine sources, and that terrestrial materials dominate the net loss of SOC during the degradation of organic matter, especially at sites located near the river outlets. Sulfate reduction via SOC degradation is not appreciable in the upper sediment layer due to conservative mixing-dilution by freshwater. However, below this layer, the anaerobic oxidation of methane(AOM) and methanogenesis occur. Within the SMTZ, the δ^(13)C mass balance shows that the proportions of DIC derived from organoclastic SO_4^(2-) reduction(OSR) and AOM are 50.3% to 66.7% and 0.1% to 17.9%, respectively, whereas methanogenesis contributes 17.0% to 43.9%. This study reveals that the upward diffusion of DIC from ongoing methanogenesis significantly influences carbon cycling within the SMTZ in these estuarine sediments. As a result, we suggest that the plots of the ratio of change in sulfate to change in DIC in pore water should be used with caution when discriminating between sulfate reduction pathways in methane-rich sediments.

Catalytic transfer hydrogenation of levulinate ester intoγ-valerolactone over ternary Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 catalyst

An effective catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) process of bio-based levulinate esters into γ-valerolactone (GVL) was explored over ternary Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 catalyst which was prepared by coprecipitation method and could be sustainably used. As a result, quantitative conversion of ethyl levulinate (EL) and 99.0% yield of GVL were obtained in the CTH process using i-PrOH as hydrogen donor. The Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 catalyst with high-surface-area could be reused at least four times without the loss of catalytic activity. Furthermore, the structure and properties of Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 catalyst was characterized through XRD, BET, SEM, TEM and H2-TPR. Also, the influence of different support oxides and calcination temperatures was investigated.

Catalytic conversion of ethyl lactate to 1,2-propanediol over CuO

An efficient conversion of biomass-derived ethyl lactate to 1,2-propanediol(1,2-PDO) over CuO was *** the catalysts we tested, CuO, Cu2 O and Co showed excellent catalytic activity for the conversion of ethyl lactate to 1,2-PDO in water, and CuO was more active and gave the best result. The 1,2-PDO yield of 93.6% was achieved when Zn acted as a reductant. The results indicated that in situ formed hydrogen by the oxidation of Zn in water is more effective than gaseous hydrogen, which failed to produce the 1,2-PDO from ethyl *** a practical point of view, the present method may provide a useful route for the production of 1,2-PDO from ethyl lactate.

Improved two-step hydrothermal process for acetic acid production from carbohydrate biomass

An improved two-step process for converting carbohydrate biomass to acetic acid under hydrothermal conditions is proposed. The first step consists of the production of lactic acid from carbohydrate biomass, and the second step consists of conversion of the lactic acid obtained in the first step to acetic acid using CuO as an oxidant. The results indicated that CuO as an oxidant in the second step can significantly improve the production of high-purity acetic acid from lactic acid, and the maximum yield of acetic acid was 61%, with a purity of 90%. The yield of acetic acid obtained using the improved two-step hydrothermal process from carbohydrate biomass, such as glucose, cellulose and starch, was greater than that obtained using traditional two-step process with H_2O_2 or O_2. In addition, a proposed pathway for the production of acetic acid from lactic acid in the second step with CuO was also discussed. The present study provides a useful two-step process for the production of acetic acid from carbohydrate biomass.

以蒙古口蘑多糖(MOP)和紫蘑菇多糖(COP)为实验材料,分别对两种多糖和混合多糖(MCP)进行了体外和体内抗肿瘤实验,用MTT比色法测定了MOP、COP、MCP对肝癌细胞(HepG2)和人宫颈癌细胞(Hela)的抑制作用,并利用统计学方法进行分析,结果表明:三者对HepG2和Hela两种癌细胞均有一定的抑制作用,但MCP的抑制效果最好,对HepG2抑制率为72.33%,对Hela的抑制率为80.68%。MCP对S180在KM小鼠体内的增殖有明显的抑制效果,最大抑制率达到58.74%,并呈现出良好的量效关系。获得的试验结果为开发真菌双糖抗肿瘤药物提供研究基础。

慢性肾脏病1~5期心肌肌钙蛋白T参考范围的确立

目的探讨慢性肾脏病(chronic kidney disease,CKD)1~5期患者心肌肌钙蛋白T(cardiac troponin T,cTnT)的参考范围。方法回顾性分析2014-01/2019-10月于作者医院住院的955例CKD患者临床资料。根据肾小球滤过率(glomerular filtration rate,GFR)将患者分为CKD1~5期;分组法按照正常组(CKD1~2期)、异常组(CKD3~5期)比较cTnT的差异性。建立各期、各组cTnT水平的参考范围。并检测分期法、分组法与原厂家cTnT水平参考范围的一致性。结果分组法中正常组与异常组的cTnT水平差异有统计学意义(P<0.01),参考范围为正常组≤0.02 ng/ml,异常组≤0.06 ng/ml;分期法中各期cTnT水平差异有统计学意义(P<0.01),cTnT水平随着CKD分期的升高而升高,参考范围为CKD1期≤0.02 ng/ml、CKD2期≤0.02 ng/ml、CKD3期≤0.03 ng/ml、CKD4期≤0.08 ng/ml、CKD5期≤0.10 ng/ml。CKD1~2期分期法、分组法与原厂家cTnT的参考范围一致。CKD3~5期分期法、分组法与原厂家的参考范围一致性均较差(Kappa=0.254、0.204);分期法与分组法的cTnT参考范围具有一致性(Kappa=0.581)。结论随着CKD分期的升高,CKD患者的cTnT水平呈逐渐上升趋势;建议使用分期法或分组法新建立的参考范围评价CKD3~5期患者的cTnT水平。
