Objectives To evaluate peripheral auditory dysfunction in senile dementia of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and its relationship with cognitive dysfunction. Methods Pure tone thresholds,word recognition scores (WRS), acoustic immittance and auditory brain-stem responses (ABR) were tested to evaluate the auditory function in 43 AD patients and 50 normal subjects. The test reliability in these subjects was examined before the test results were evaluated for their correlation with the Mini Mental State Examination(MMSE) score. Results There were no statistically significant differences in peripheral auditory functions between the two ears in the tested subjects or between the two groups when the auditometric results of the right ear were compared(P > 0.05). Also, there were no statistically significant differences between the two groups when audiometric test reliability, acoustic impedance and ABR results were compared(P > 0.05). Conclutions The pure tone audiometric threshold and WRS in AD patients are similar to those in comparable non-AD senile subjects. Peripheral auditory dysfunction is not related to cognitive dysfunction.

Protective effect of liver ischemic preconditioning on rat hepatocytes

Ischemic preconditioning (IPC) protects liver graft function following ischemia in liver transplantation and liver resection. The aim of this study was to assess the advantages and any potential disadvantages of liver IPC prior to isolation for rat hepatocytes during isolation and cryopreservation. After isolating and thawing the cryopreserved hepatocytes after 14 and 2. d,cell viability,efficiency,and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) levels in preserve solution were examined for every group. Groups treated with IPC had better cell viability determination,assessment of plating efficiency and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) assay than Group without IPC,suggesting that IPC prior to isolation may have a significant protective effect on hepatocytes subjected to isolation and short period cryopreservation.

ERK1/2.contributes negative regulation to STAT3 activity in HSS-transfected HepG2.cells

Signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) is a recently characterized transcription factor which is essential to liver regeneration. We have previously reported that hepatic stimulator substance (HSS), a novel growthpromoting substance, phosphorylated the epidermal growth factor (EGF) receptors and activated downstream Ras-MAP kinase (extracellular signal-regulated kinases, ERK1/2. cascade. However, whether HSS signal is related to STAT3 pathway remains unclear. The present study is aiming to explore the regulatory effect of activation of ERK1/2.evoked by HSS on STAT3 phosphorylation and STAT3 signaling. Human hepatoma cell line HepG2.was stably transfected with HSS cDNA and HSS expression was measured by Northern blot. The results showed that the transfection of HSS into HepG2.resulted in remarkable increase in cellular proliferation as compared with the non-transfected cells, and it was further proved that the cellular proliferation in the HSS-transfected cells was related to ERK1/2.a

Somato_visceral interaction or acupoint_visceral interaction is an important subject that greatly concerns scholars of both Chinese traditional and Western modern medicine. The role of our newly discovered spinal projection neurons and type A or C spinal ganglion neurons in convergence and integration of somato_visceral sensation is introduced. The possible challenge brought about by these related results onto some traditional concepts in neuroscience is also discussed.

Transcervical Approach for Resection of Lateral Skull Base Tumors

Objectives Conventional approaches for removal of lateral skull base tumors, including transmandibular, infratemporal fossa, preauricular transzygmatic subtemporal approaches, are major invasive procedures that often sacrifice hearing and cause abnormal occlusion and cosmetic defects. Reports of the transcervical approach for resection of skull base tumors are rare, although it was described for resection of clival chordomas in as early as 1966. The purpose of this study is to review our experiences in management of lateral skull base tumors using the transcervical approach. Study Design Retrospective chart review. Methods Six lateral skull base tumor cases treated with transcervical approach procedures were reviewed, including the medical records. Results There were 4 males and 2.females. Age ranged from 12.through 52.years. Histopathological diagnoses included malignant schwannoma(n = 1), malignant carotid body tumor(n = 1), heamangioma(n=1), schwannoma (n=2. and pleomorphic adenoma (n = 1). Transcervical techniques were used in all cases with the use of microscope in the lateral skull base area. Complete tumor removal was achieved in all cases. Postoperative radiotherapy was implemented in 1 case of malignant schwannoma and 1 case of malignant carotid body tumor. Jugular foramen syndrome occurred as a surgical complication in 1 case of malignant Schwannoma of the vagus nerve. There was no tumor recurrence during the 10 - 42.month follow-up period. Conclusion Compared with conventional approaches, the transcervical approach provides a easy, safe, minimal invasive and effective procedure for removal of selected lateral skull base tumors.

Synthesis and Characterization of Polyurethane

Warthin-starry Silver Method Showing Particulate Matter in Macrophage

Objective To verify whether Warthin-Starry （WS） silver method could detect the air particulate matter （PM）/dust particles （Ps） located within the macrophages in situ. Methods There were 2. autopsy cases that resulted from cerebral hemorrhage （group A）, silicosis （group B）, and fetal death during pregnancy （group C）. Samples were collected separately and serial sections were prepared from the lungs and lymph nodes and stained with hematoxylin and eosin （HE）, WS silver, immunohistochemistry of CD68. Furthermore, ultrathin sections were taken from the WS positive serial sections of groups A and B. Ps were observed under a transmission electron microscope （TEM） and the elements of Ps were measured by X-ray spectrum analysis （X-RSA）. Results In both groups A and B, WS staining was positive for the larger and fine Ps, the so called ＂dust cells＂, but HE staining was almost negative for fine Ps. In group C, no larger or fine Ps were found. Immunohistochemical staining of CD68 certified that the ＂dust cells＂ containing Ps were macrophages. The results of TEM and X-RSA proved that the structure and elements of Ps belonged to PM indeed. Conclusion WS staining is a better than HE staining in showing the location of PM within macrophages.

Investigation of Myocardial Stunning after Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation in Pigs

Objective To investigate cardiac function and myocardial perfusion during 48 h after cardiopulmonary resuscitation （CPR）, further to test myocardial stunning and seek indicators for long‐term survival after CPR. Methods After 4 min of untreated ventricular fibrillation, fifteen anesthetized pigs were studied at baseline and 2.h, 4 h, 2. h, and 48 h after restoration of spontaneous circulation （ROSC）. Hemodynamic data, echocardiography and gated‐single photon emission computed tomography myocardial perfusion images were carried out. Results Mean arterial pressure （MAP）, coronary perfusion pressure （CPP） and cardiac troponin I （CTNI） showed significant differences between eventual survival animals and non‐survival animals at 4 h after ROSC （109.2.10.7 mmHg vs. 94.8±12.3 mmHg, P=0.048; 100.8±6.9 mmHg vs. 84.4±12.6 mmHg, P=0.011; 1.60±0.13 ug/L vs. 1.75±0.10 ug/L, P=0.046）. Mitral valve early‐to‐late diastolic peak velocity ratio, mitral valve deceleration time recovered 2. h; ejection faction and the summed rest score recovered 48 h after ROSC. Conclusion Cardiac systolic and early active relaxation dysfunctions were reversible within survival animals; cardiac stunning might be potentially adaptive and protective after CPR. The recovery of MAP, CPP, and CTNI could be the indicators for long‐term survival after CPR.
