Impact of Extraction Method on Physicochemical Characteristics and Antioxidant Potential of <i>Adansonia digitata</i>Oil

In this study, the effect of extraction processes on the physicochemical characteristics and antioxidant potential of baobab (Adansonia digitata L.) seed oil was evaluated. The oils were extracted, on the one hand, by cold pressing, and on the other hand, with three types of organic solvents (acetone, chloroform, n-hexane). The recorded results indicated that the extraction yield of baobab oil was significantly impacted by both the extraction method and the polarity of the solvent used. In addition, chloroform provides the best extraction yield (40.12 ± 0.607). However, extraction by cold pressure preserves at best the physicochemical and bioactive properties of the extracted oils. Indeed, the pressing oil contains a content of phenolic compounds (0.047 ± 0.0024 mgEAG/g of oil) and a very high radical scavenging activity (DPPH) (31.71% ± 0.61%). For the various oils extracted, the minimum and maximum values were 0.50 and 3.17 mEq?kg-1;56.26 and 99.113 mgI2?100 g-1;1.457 and 1.465;205.37 and 233.587 mgKOH/g respectively for the peroxide, iodine, refractive and saponification values. The color parameters (L*, a* and b*) of the oils also differ depending on the nature of the organic solvent used. Principal component analysis (PCA) and correlation analysis were performed on the physicochemical properties and the antioxidant potential of the extracted oils. Therefore, the results suggest the mixed use of acetone and hexane to obtain oil comparable to that extracted by cold pressing.

Localization-limited exciton oscillator strength in colloidal CdSe nanoplatelets revealed by the optically induced stark effect

2D materials are considered for applications that require strong light-matter interaction because of the apparently giant oscillator strength of the exciton transitions in the absorbance ***,the effective oscillator strengths of these transitions have bee n scarcely reported,nor is there a con sistent interpretati on of the obtained ***,we analyse the transition dipole moment and the ensuing oscillator strength of the exciton transition in 2D CdSe nanoplatelets by means of the optically induced Stark effect(OSE).Intriguingly,we find that the exciton absorption line reacts to a high intensity optical field as a transition with an oscillator strength FStark that is 50 times smaller than expected based on the linear absorption *** propose that the pronounced exciton absorption line should be seen as the sum of multiple,low oscillator strength transitions,rather than a single high oscillator strength one,a feat we assign to strong exciton center-of-mass *** the quantum mechanical description of excitons,this 50-fold difference between both oscillator strengths corresponds to the ratio between the cohere nee area of the exciton's center of mass and the total area,which yields a coherence area of a mere 6.1 *** we find that the coherence area in creases with reducing temperature,we conclude that thermal effects,related to lattice vibrations,contribute to exciton *** further support of this localization model,we show that FStark is in dependent of the n anoplatelet area,correctly predicts the radiative lifetime,and lines up for strongly confined quantum dot systems.

Assessment of the Level of Knowledge, Attitude, and Practice with Regard to Care of People Living with HIV/AIDS among Nursing and Midwifery Students in Fako, Cameroon

Due to the chronic shortage of health personnel, nurses and midwives now play a fundamental role in the care and treatment of people living with HIV/ AIDS (PLHIV) in Cameroon. This study was therefore designed to assess the level of knowledge, attitude and practice with regard to care of PLHIV among nursing and midwifery students in Fako division of Cameroon. A survey was performed between May and July 2015, among 227 nursing and midwifery students (in their second to final year of study), selected from 8 government accredited training institutions in Fako division of Cameroon. An anonymous self-administered semi-structured questionnaire was used to collect data. The Pearson’s chi-square test, univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses adjusting for possible confounders were all performed as part of the statistical analyses. The cutoff of statistical significance was set at p ≤ 0.05. Nursing and midwifery students had a moderate level of HIV/AIDS knowledge (average score of 7.02 on a scale of 11). Attitude towards PLHIV was generally positive (68.7%) but there were some misconceptions and prejudice about PLHIV, with considerable stigmatization (31.3%), unwillingness to share a room with someone infected with HIV (27.7%), and unwillingness to work on PLHIV (23.8%). Good HIV/AIDS knowledge was observed to be the sole independent predictor (p = 0.004) of positive attitude towards PLHIV. Fur-thermore the confidence of the respondents regarding care of PLHIV was generally moderate. Our results suggest the need for the development of a more appropriate education program in nursing and midwifery institutions in Fako division to reduce the discrepancies between the general knowledge, attitude and practice regarding care of PLHIV.

Background:Drug resistance is one of the greatest challenges of malaria control programmes,with the monitoring of parasite resistance to artemisinins or to Artemisinin Combination Therapy(ACT)partner drugs critical to elimination *** of resistance to a wide panel of antimalarials were assessed in natural parasite populations from southwestern ***:Individuals with asymptomatic parasitaemia or uncomplicated malaria were enrolled through crosssectional surveys from May 2013 to March 2014 along the slope of mount *** falciparum malaria parasitaemic blood,screened by light microscopy,was depleted of leucocytes using CF11 cellulose columns and the parasite genotype ascertained by sequencing on the Illumina HiSeq ***:A total of 259 participants were enrolled in this study from three different *** some alleles associated with drug resistance in pfdhfr,pfmdr1 and pfcrt were highly prevalent,less than 3%of all samples carried mutations in the pfkelch13 gene,none of which were amongst those associated with slow artemisinin parasite clearance rates in Southeast *** most prevalent haplotypes were triple mutants PfdhfrI51R59N108I164(99%),pfcrt-C72V73I74E75T76(47.3%),and single mutants PfdhpsS_(436)G_(437)K_(540)A_(581)A_(613)(69%)and Pfmdr1 N_(86)F)(184)D_(1246)(53.2%).Conclusions:The predominance of the Pf pfcrt CVIET and Pf dhfr IRN triple mutant parasites and absence of pfkelch13 resistance alleles suggest that the amodiaquine and pyrimethamine components of AS-AQ and SP may no longer be effective in their role while chloroquine resistance still persists in southwestern Cameroon.

Influence of magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles on red blood cells and Caco-2 cells

The interactions of two types of cells (red blood cells, Caco-2 cells) with magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (non-grafted, citrate-grafted, dendrimer-grafted) of 11 nm in size have been investigated. We focused on two important physiological parameters of the cells, the intracellular pH and the intracellular Ca2+ content. The results show that the nanoparticles do not have a significant influence on the pH and Ca2+ content of Caco-2 cells. The Ca2+ content of red blood cells is also not affected but the intracellular pH is slightly reduced.

Background: Viral hepatitis C is a major public health problem in the world. The advent of direct-acting antivirals has revolutionized the taking in charge and prognosis of patients infected with the hepatitis C virus. The interest of this presentation is to draw attention to the problem of therapeutic care posed by viral hepatitis C in kidney transplant patients in C?te d’Ivoire, a country with limited resources where all direct-acting antivirals are not yet available. Patient observation: We report the case of a kidney transplant of 52 years old, chronic bearer of viral hepatitis C virus who after his kidney transplant presented, decompensated active cirrhosis. A treatment based on Sofosbuvir 400 mg/Ledipasvir 90 mg in this patient with genotype 2 for 12 weeks was initiated. A sustained virological response was observed 12 weeks after the end of treatment. Conclusion: Direct-acting antivirals offer the possibility of antiviral C treatment without interferon or ribavirin in cirrhotic renal transplant.

We report supercontinuum generation in nitrogen-rich(N-rich)silicon nitride waveguides fabricated through back-end complementary-metal-oxide-semiconductor(CMOS)-compatible processes on a 300 mm *** pumping in the anomalous dispersion regime at a wavelength of 1200 nm,two-octave spanning spectra covering the visible and near-infrared ranges,including the O band,were *** calculations showed that the nonlinear index of N-rich silicon nitride is within the same order of magnitude as that of stoichiometric silicon nitride,despite the lower silicon content.N-rich silicon nitride then appears to be a promising candidate for nonlinear devices compatible with back-end CMOS processes.
