A 43-year-old white man was referred to the special Care dentistr y Center of the school of dentistry,University of sao Paulo, Brazil, for the diagn.s.s o f an extensive nodular lesion of the maxillary gingiva. The patient complained t hat his left maxilla had swollen over the last 4 months, with some exudation fro m the gingival crevice, sporadic bleeding, and slight tooth mobility, but no pai n. An extra-oral examination confirmed expressive swelling of the left side of the face (Fig. 1A). Palpation disclosed bilateral enlargement of the submandibu lar lymph nodes. An intra-oral examination.s.owed an extensive, reddish, nodul ar mass (around 11 cm in diameter) that extended from the last left maxillary mo lar to the right maxillary incisor, covered by a mucosa that was ulcerated in.s. me areas (Fig. 1B,C). Palpation revealed a painless, soft, bleeding tissue that seemed to arise in the periodontal ligamen.s. extending to the palate and vestibular area. A small pigmented spot was found in the palat al mass. Histopathologically, the biopsy revealed a proliferation of neoplastic cells that exhibited a wide variety of shapes, including spindle, plasmacytoid, and epithelioid forms. The atypical cells showed enlarged and pleomorphic nuclei . Mitotic activity and pigmented areas were observed (Fig. 2A,B). Immunohistoche mistry was used to establish the final diagn.s.s. The tumor cells strongly expre ssed s100 protein, gp100 (HMB- 45), melan A, and tyrosine antibodies (Fig. 2C,D ). With the diagn.s.s of malignant melanoma, the patient was referred to an onco logist for treatment. As computed tomography revealed that the lesion was deeply inserted into the skull surface (Fig. 1D), surgical intervention was not possib le. The patient underwent radiotherapy, but died 14 months later.

Partition coefficient prediction of Baker's yeast invertase in aqueous two phase systems using hybrid group method data handling neural network

A hybrid GMDH neural network model has been developed in order to predict the partition coefficien.s.of invertase from Baker's yeast. ATPs experimen.s.were carried out changing the molar average mass of PEG(1500–6000 Da), p H(4.0–7.0), percentage of PEG(10.0–20.0 w/w), percentage of MgsO_4(8.0–16.0 w/w), percentage of the cell homogenate(10.0–20.0 w/w) and the percentage of MnsO_4(0–5.0 w/w) added as cosolute. The network evaluation was carried out comparing the partition coefficien.s.obtained from the hybrid GMDH neural network with the experimental data using different statistical metrics. The hybrid GMDH neural network model showed better fitting(AARD = 32.752%) as well as good generalization capacity of the partition coefficien.s.of the ATPs than the original GMDH network approach and a BPAnn model. Therefore hybrid GMDH neural network model appears as a powerful tool for predicting partition coefficien.s.during downstream processing of biomolecules.

Influence of Microstructures on Polarization Resistance and Hydrogen-Induced Cracking of a Micro-Alloyed steel submitted to Different Cooling Rates

The effect of different microstructures on the polarization resistance (Rp) and the hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC) of a micro-alloyed steel austenitized and submitted to different cooling rates was *** 19.1 x 6 x 2 mm,containing the whole thickn.s. of the plate were extracted from a 20 mm plate and heat treated on a quenching dilatometer,were submitted to Rp and HIC corrosion *** Rp and HIC tests followed as close as possible AsTM G59 and nACE standard TM0284-2003,in this case,modified only with regard to the size of the *** samples transformed from austenite by a slow cooling (cooling rate of 0.5℃.s-1) showed higher susceptibility to hydrogen-induced cracking,with large cracks in the middle of the sample propagating along segregation ban.s.corresponding to the centerline of the plate *** cooling rates of 10℃.s-1,only small cracks were found in the matrix and micro cracks nucleated at non-metallic *** higher cooling rates (40℃.s-1) very few small cracks were detected,linked to non-metallic *** result suggests that structures formed by polygonal structures and segregation ban.s.(were eutectoid microconstituen.s.predominate) have higher susceptibility to *** predominantly formed by acicular ferrite make it difficult to propagate the cracks among non-oriented and interlaced acicular ferrite *** segregation ban.s.containing eutectoid products also help inhibit cracking and crack propagation.s.gregation ban.s.can function as pipelin.s.for hydrogen diffusion and offer a path of stress concentration for the propagation of cracks,frequently associated to non-metallic *** resistance essays performed on the steel in theas received condition,prior to any heat treatment,showed larger differences between the regions of the plate,with a considerably lower Rp in the *** austenitization heat treatmen.s.followed by cooling rates of 0.5 e 10℃.s-1 made more uniform the

Combustion.s.nthesis and lumin.s.ence characteristic of rare earth activated LiCaBO_3

Lithium calcium borate （LiCaBO3） polycrystalline thermolumin.s.ence （TL） phosphor doped with rare earth （Tb3＋ and Dy3＋） elemen.s.was synthesized by novel solution combustion.s.nthesis. The reaction produced very stable crystalline LiCaBO3：D（D=Tb3＋ and Dy3＋） phosphors. These rare earth doped phosphors material showed maximum TL sensitivity with favorable glow curve shape. TL glow curve of X-ray irradiated that LiCaBO3：Tb3＋ and LiCaBO3：Dy3＋ samples showed two major well-separated glow peaks. The TL sensitivity of these phosphors to X-ray radiation was comparable with that of TLD-100（Harshaw）. Photolumin.s.ence spectra of LiCaBO3：Tb3＋ and LiCaBO3：Dy3＋ showed the characteristic Tb3＋ and Dy3＋ peaks respectively. TL response to X-ray radiation dose was linear up to 25 Gy.
