Background:Effective screening is a desirable method for the early detection and successful treatment for diabetic retinopathy,and fundus photography is currently the dominant medium for retinal imaging due to its convenience and *** screening using fundus photographs has however involved considerable costs for patients,clinicians and national health systems,which has limited its application particularly in less-developed *** advent of artificial intelligence,and in particular deep learning techniques,has however raised the possibility of widespread automated *** text:In this review,we first briefly survey major published advances in retinal analysis using artificial *** take care to separately describe standard multiple-field fundus photography,and the newer modalities of ultrawide field photography and smartphone-based ***,we consider several machine learning concepts that have been particularly relevant to the domain and illustrate their usage with extant ***:In the ophthalmology field,it was demonstrated that deep learning tools for diabetic retinopathy show clinically acceptable diagnostic performance when using colour retinal fundus *** intelligence models are among the most promising solutions to tackle the burden of diabetic retinopathy management in a comprehensive ***,future research is crucial to assess the potential clinical deployment,evaluate the cost-effectiveness of different DL systems in clinical practice and improve clinical acceptance.

As the population ages,the burden of age-related diseases becomes ***,over 55 million people suffer from dementia worldwide,with Alzheimer’s disease being the most common ***,it is becoming clearer that underlying vascular pathology such as cerebral small vessel disease(csVD)may be a more detrimental cause for dementia(Cuadrado-Godia et al.,2018).It is estimated that 10%-30%of the elderly population and 35%-90%of all dementia patients exhibit signs of *** term csVD refers to pathology affecting the small vessels of the brain,which can lead to lacunar cerebral infarcts,enlarged perivascular spaces,and cortical hemorrhages(Cuadrado-Godia et al.,2018).CsVD is often associated with cognitive decline,gait problems,and dementia(Cuadrado-Godia et al.,2018).

Hippocampal neuronal loss causes cognitive dysfunction in Alzheimer’s *** hippocampal neurogenesis is reduced in patients with Alzheimer’s *** stimulates adult hippocampal neurogenesis in rodents and improves memory and slows cognitive decline in patients with Alzheimer’s ***,the molecular pathways for exercise-induced adult hippocampal neurogenesis and improved cognition in Alzheimer’s disease are poorly ***,regulator of G protein signaling 6(RGs6)was identified as the mediator of voluntary running-induced adult hippocampal neurogenesis in ***,we generated novel RGs6fl/fl;APP_(swE) mice and used retroviral approaches to examine the impact of RGs6 deletion from dentate gyrus neuronal progenitor cells on voluntary running-induced adult hippocampal neurogenesis and cognition in an amyloid-based Alzheimer’s disease mouse *** found that voluntary running in APP_(swE) mice restored their hippocampal cognitive impairments to that of control *** cognitive rescue was abolished by RGs6 deletion in dentate gyrus neuronal progenitor cells,which also abolished running-mediated increases in adult hippocampal *** hippocampal neurogenesis was reduced in sedentary APP_(swE) mice versus control mice,with basal adult hippocampal neurogenesis reduced by RGs6 deletion in dentate gyrus neural precursor ***6 was expressed in neurons within the dentate gyrus of patients with Alzheimer’s disease with significant loss of these RGs6-expressing ***,RGs6 mediated voluntary running-induced rescue of impaired cognition and adult hippocampal neurogenesis in APP_(swE) mice,identifying RGs6 in dentate gyrus neural precursor cells as a possible therapeutic target in Alzheimer’s disease.

wafer-scale Ag<sub>2sub>s-Based Memristive Crossbar Arrays with Ultra-Low switching-Energies Reaching Biological synapses

Memristive crossbar arrays (MCAs) offer parallel data storage and processing for energy-efficient neuromorphic computing. However, most wafer-scale MCAs that are compatible with complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOs) technology still suffer from substantially larger energy consumption than biological synapses, due to the slow kinetics of forming conductive paths inside the memristive units. Here we report wafer-scale Ag2s-based MCAs realized using CMOs-compatible processes at temperatures below 160 degrees C. Ag2s electrolytes supply highly mobile Ag+ ions, and provide the Ag/Ag2s interface with low silver nucleation barrier to form silver filaments at low energy costs. By further enhancing Ag+ migration in Ag2s electrolytes via microstructure modulation, the integrated memristors exhibit a record low threshold of approximately - 0.1 V, and demonstrate ultra-low switching-energies reaching femtojoule values as observed in biological synapses. The low-temperature process also enables MCA integration on polyimide substrates for applications in flexible electronics. Moreover, the intrinsic nonidealities of the memristive units for deep learning can be compensated by employing an advanced training algorithm. An impressive accuracy of 92.6% in image recognition simulations is demonstrated with the MCAs after the compensation. The demonstrated MCAs provide a promising device option for neuromorphic computing with ultra-high energy-efficiency.

Efects of solution chemistry on arsenic(V) removal by low-cost adsorbents

Natural and anthropogenic arsenic （As） contamination of water sources pose serious health concerns, especially for small communities in rural areas. This study assessed the applicability of three industrial byproducts （coal fly ash, lignite, and green waste compost） as the low-cost adsorbents for As（V） removal under various field-relevant conditions （dissolved oxygen, As（V）/Fe ratio, solution pH, and presence of competing species）. The physico-chemical properties of the adsorbents were characterized by XRD, XRF, FT-IR, and NMR analysis. Batch experiments demonstrated that coal fly ash could provide effective As（V） removal （82.1%-95%） because it contained high content of amorphous iron/aluminium hydroxides for As（V） adsorption and dissolvable calcium minerals for calcium arsenate precipitation. However, the addition of lignite and green waste compost was found unfavourable since they hindered the As（V） removal by 10%-42% possibly due to dissolution of organic matter and ternary arsenate-iron-organic matter complexes. On the other hand, higher concentrations of dissolved iron （comparing As（V）/Fe ratios of 1：1 and 1：10） and dissolved oxygen （comparing 0.2 and 6 mg/L） only marginally enhanced the As（V） removal at pH 6 and 8. Thus, addition of dissolved iron, water aeration, or pH adjustment became unnecessary because coal fly ash was able to provide effective As（V） removal under the natural range of geochemical conditions. Moreover, the presence of low levels of background competing （0.8 or 8 mg/L of humic acid, phosphate, and silicate） imposed little influence on As（V） removal, possibly because the high adsorption capacity of coal fly ash was far from exhaustion. These results suggested that coal fly ash was a potentially promising adsorbent that warranted further investigation.

Potential role of metabolomics in diagnosis and surveillance of gastric cancer

Gastric cancer is one of the deadliest cancers worldwide, and is especially prevalent in Asian countries. with such high morbidity and mortality, early diagnosis is essential to achieving curative intent treatment and long term survival. Metabolomics is a new field of study that analyzes metabolites from biofluids and tissue samples. while metabolomics is still in its infancy, there are numerous potential applications in oncology, specifically early diagnosis. Only a few studies in the literature have examined metabolomics’ role in gastric cancer. Various fatty acid, carbohydrate, nucleic acid, and amino acid metabolites have been identified that distinguish gastric cancer from normal tissue and benign gastric disease. However, findings from these few studies are at times conflicting. Most studies demonstrate some relationship of cancer cells to the warburg Effect, in that glycolysis predominates with conversion of pyruvate to lactate. This is one of the most consistent findings across the literature. There is less consistency in metabolomic signature with respect to nucleic acids, lipids and amino acids. In spite of this, metabolomics holds some promise for cancer surveillance but further studies are necessary to achieve consistency and validation before it can be widely employed as a clinical tool.

screening primary racemic amines for enantioseparation by derivatized polysaccharide and cyclofructan columns

It is a challenge to separate the enantiomers of native chiral amines prone to deleterious silanol interactions. Aset of 39 underivatized chiral primary amines was screened for enantiomeric separation. seven recentlyintroduced commercial chiral columns were tested. They included six polysaccharide based chiral stationaryphases (CsP) with bonded derivatives, ChiralPak? IA, IB, IC, ID, IE and IF columns and a cyclofructanderivatized CsP, Larihc? CF6-P column. Both the normal phase (NP) mode with heptane/alcohol mobile phasesand the polar organic (PO) mode with acetonitrile/alcohol were evaluated. It was found that the cyclofructanbased CsP demonstrated the highest success rate in separating primary amines in the PO mode with only onechiral amine not resolved. It is shown that, when screening the columns, there is no standard optimal condition;an excellent mobile phase composition for one column may be poorly suited to another one. Althoughbutylamine was a good mobile phase additive for the polysaccharide columns in both PO and NP modes, it wasdetrimental to the enantio-recognition capability of the cyclofructan column. Triethylamine was the appropriatesilanol screening agent for this latter column.

On the Importance of the stokes-Brinkman Equations for Computing Effective Permeability in Karst Reservoirs

Cavities and fractures significantly affect the flow paths in carbonate reservoirs and should be accurately accounted for in numerical ***,we consider the problem of computing the effective permeability of rock samples based on high-resolution 3DCT scans containingmillions of *** use the stokes-Brinkman equations in the entire domain,covering regions of free flow governed by the stokes equations,porous Darcy flow,and transitions between *** presence of different length scales and large(ten orders of magnitude)contrasts in permeability leads to highly ill-conditioned linear systems of equations,which are difficult to *** obtain a problem that is computationally tractable,we first analyze the relative importance of the stokes and Darcy terms for a set of idealized 2D *** find that,in terms of effective permeability,the stokes-Brinkman equations are only applicable for a special parameter set where the effective free-flow permeability is less than four orders of magnitude different from the matrix *** other cases can be accurately modeled with either the stokes or the Darcy end-member flows,depending on if there do or do not exist percolating free-flow *** insights obtained are used to perform a direct computation of the effective permeability of a rock sample model with more than 8 million cells.

Pathophysiology and treatment of Barrett's esophagus

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) affects an estimated 20% of the population in the United states. About 10%-15% of patients with GERD develop Barrett’s esophagus, which can progress to adenocarcinoma, currently the most prevalent type of esophageal cancer. The esophagus is normally lined by squamous mucosa, therefore, it is clear that for adenocarcinoma to develop, there must be a sequence of events that result in transformation of the normal squamous mucosa into columnar epithelium. This sequence begins with gastroesophageal reflux, and with continued injury metaplastic columnar epithelium develops. This article reviews the pathophysiology of Barrett’s esophagus and implications for its treatment. The effect of medical and surgical therapy of Barrett’s esophagus is compared.
