Association of late-life changes in blood pressure and cognitive status

BackgroundDisagreement exists on the association between changes in blood pressure and cognitive impairment. We aimed to ex-amine whether 4-year changes in systolic and diastolic blood pressure （SBP and DBP） are associated with cognitive status in a representative sample of older men and *** of longitudinal data from 854 participants of a population-based German sample （aged 60-87 years） was performed with standard cognitive screening and blood pressure measurements. Effects of changes in SBP and DBP （10 mmhg and 5 mmhg respectively as unit of regression effect measure） on cognitive status were evaluated using non-parametric and lin-ear regression *** clear associations were seen between changes in SBP or in DBP and cognitive scores. Small effects were found after stratification for sex and hypertension awareness. Specifically, larger decreases in SBP were associated with higher cogni-tive scores in those men aware of their hypertension （10 mmhg decrease in SBP,b =-0.26, 95% CI：-0.51 to-0.02） and men with con-trolled hypertension （10 mmhg decrease in SBP,b =-0.44, 95% CI：-0.92 to-0.03）. Additionally larger increases in DBP were associated with higher cognitive scores in men with controlled hypertension （5 mmhg increase in DBP,b = 0.67, 95% CI： 0.19-1.15）. For women aware of their hypertension, larger decreases in DBP were associated with higher cognitive scores （5 mmhg decrease in DBP,b =-0.26; 95%CI：-0.51 to-0.01）.ConclusionsChanges in blood pressure were only weakly associated with cognitive status. Specifically, decreases in SBP were associated with higher cognitive scores in men aware of their hypertension and especially those that were medically controlled.

Thiopurine analogs and anti-tumor necrosis factor (TNF) agents have dramatically changed the therapeutics of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), improving short and long-term outcomes. Unfortunately some patients do not respond to therapy and others lose response over time. The pharmacokinetic properties of these drugs are complex, with high inter-patient variability. Thiopurine analogs are metabolized through a series of pathways, which vary according to the patients’ pharmacogenetic profile. This profile largely determines the ratios of metabolites, which are in turn associated with likelihoods of clinical efficacy and/or toxicity. Understanding these mechanisms allows for manipulation of drug dose, aiming to reduce the development of toxicity while improving the efficacy of treatment. The efficacy of anti-TNF drugs is influenced by many pharmacodynamic variables. Several factors may alter drug clearance, including the concomitant use of immunomodulators (thiopurine analogs and methotrexate), systemic inflammation, the presence of anti-drug antibodies, and body mass. The treatment of IBD has evolved with the understanding of the pharmacologic profiles of immunomodulating and TNF-inhibiting medications, with good evidence for improvement in patient outcomes observed when measuring metabolic pathway indices. The role of routine measurement of metabolite/drug levels and antibodies warrants further prospective studies as we enter the era of personalized IBD care.

We report on the use of a novel non-instrumented platform to enable a Loop Mediated isothermal Amplification(LAMP) based assay for Salmonella *** energy is provided by addition of a small amount(he reaction temperature is regulated by storing latent energy at the melting temperature of a lipid-based engineered phase change *** classification of the reaction is achieved without opening the reaction tube by observing the fluorescence of sequence-specific FRET-based assimilating probes with a simple handheld *** or above 22℃ ambient temperature the non-instrumented devices could maintain reactions above a threshold temperature of 61℃ for over 90 min-significantly longer than the 60 min reaction *** the simple format,detection limits were less than 20 genome copies for reactions run at ambient temperatures ranging from 8 to 36℃.When used with a pre-enrichment step and non-instrumented DNA extraction device,trace contaminations of Salmonella in milk close to 1 CFU/mL could be reliably *** findings illustrate that the non-instrumented amplification approach is a simple,viable,low-cost alternative for field-based food and agricultural diagnostics or clinical applications in developing countries.

From a macro-energy system perspective,an energy storage is valuable if it contributes to meeting system objectives,including increasing economic value,reliability and *** most energy systems models,reliability and sustainability are forced by constraints,and if energy demand is exogenous,this leaves cost as the main metric for economic *** ways to improve storage technologies are to reduce their costs;however,the cheapest energy storage is not always the most valuable in energy *** techno-economical evaluation methods try to address the cost and value situation but do not judge the competitiveness of multiple technologies *** paper introduces the‘market potential method’as a new complementary valuation method guiding innovation of multiple energy *** market potential method derives the value of technologies by examining common deployment signals from energy system model outputs in a structured *** apply and compare this method to cost evaluation approaches in a renewables-based European power system model,covering diverse energy storage *** find that characteristics of high-cost hydrogen storage can be more valuable than low-cost hydrogen ***,we show that modifying the freedom of storage sizing and component interactions can make the energy system 10% cheaper and impact the value of *** results suggest looking beyond the pure cost reduction paradigm and focus on developing technologies with suitable value approaches that can lead to cheaper electricity systems in future.

Previous studies have shown that individuals responded preferentially to the mark of the top-scent donor relative to that of the bottom-scent donor of an over-mark. however, terrestrial mammals are likely to encounter over-marks consisting of the scent marks of more than two same-sex conspecifics in the intersections of runways, near the nests of sexually receptive female conspecifics, and inside and along the borders of the territories of conspecifics. We determined how meadow voles, Microtus pennsylvanicus, respond to the marks of the top-, middle-, and bottom-scent donors of an over-mark. We tested the hypothesis that voles exposed to an over-mark will respond preferentially to the scent marks that were deposited more recently, the scent marks that were on top or near the top of the over-mark, compared to the scent marks that were deposited earlier or near the bot- tom of the over-mark. Voles spent more time investigating the mark of the top-scent donor than that of the either the middle- or bottom-scent donor. however, males but not female voles spent more time investigating the middle-scent mark than the bot- tom-scent mark. We also tested the hypothesis that voles evaluate and respond to over-marks differently from single scent marks. Voles spent more time investigating the marks of the top-, middle-, and bottom-scent donors compared to scent marks that were not part of the over-mark. Voles can distinguish among the overlapping scent marks of three scent donors and sex differences exist in the values they appear to attach to each of these scent marks [Current Zoology 57 （4）： 441-448, 2011 ].

In 1934,Frits Zernike demonstrated that it is possible to exploit the sample’s refractive index to obtain superior contrast images of biological *** refractive index contrast of a cell surrounded by media yields a change in the phase and intensity of the transmitted light *** change can be due to either scattering or absorption caused by the *** cells are transparent at visible wavelengths,which means the imaginary component of their complex refractive index,also known as extinction coefficient k,is close to ***,we explore the use of c-band ultra-violet(UVC)light for high-contrast high-resolution label-free microscopy,as k is naturally substantially higher in the UVC than at visible *** differential phase contrast illumination and associated processing,we achieve a 7-to 300-fold improvement in contrast compared to visible-wavelength and UVA differential interference contrast microscopy or holotomography,and quantify the extinction coefficient distribution within liver sinusoidal endothelial *** a resolution down to 215 nm,we are,for the first time in a far-field label-free method,able to image individual fenestrations within their sieve plates which normally requires electron or fluorescence superresolution *** illumination also matches the excitation peak of intrinsically fluorescent proteins and amino acids and thus allows us to utilize autofluorescence as an independent imaging modality on the same setup.

AIM: To assess the impact of bolus volume on the characteristics of small intestinal (SI) impedance ***: Concurrent SI manometry-impedance measurements were performed on 12 healthy volunteers to assess the pattern of proximal jejunal fluid bolus movement over a 14 *** subject was given 34 boluses of normal saline (volume from 1 to 30 mL) via the feeding tube placed immediately above the proximal margin of the studied segment.A bolus-induced impedance event occurred if there was > 12% impedance drop from baseline,over ≥ 3 consecutive segments within 10 s of bolus injection.A minor or major imped-ance event was defined as a duration of impedance drop he minimum volume required for a detectable SI impedance event was 2 mL.A direct linear relationship between the SI bolus volume and the occurrence of impedance events was noted until SI bolus volume reached 10 mL,a volume which always produced an impedance flow *** was a moderate correlation between the bolus volume and the duration of impedance drop (r = 0.63,P he number of propagated channels (r = 0.50,P high volume boluses were associated with more major impedance events (≥ 10 mL boluses = 63%,3 mL boluses = 17%,and had an impact on the type and length of propagation of SI impedance events and a threshold of 2 mL is required to produce an event.
