Changes in rainfall regime and grazing pressure affect vegetation composition and diversity with ecological implications for savannahs. The savannah in East Africa has experienced increased livestock grazing and rainfall variability but the impacts associated with those changes on the herbaceous layer have rarely been documented. We investigated the effect of livestock grazing, rainfall manipulation and their interaction on the composition and diversity of the herbaceous community in the savannah for two years in Lambwe, Kenya. Rainfall manipulation plots were set up for vegetation sampling;these plots received either 50% more or 50% less rainfall than control plots. Simpson’s diversity and Bergere Parker indices were used to determine diversity changes and dominance respectively. The frequency of species was used to compute their abundance and their life forms as determined from the literature. Grazing significantly increased species diversity through suppression of dominant species. Rainfall manipulation had no significant impact on plant diversity in fenced plots, but rainfall reduction significantly reduced diversity in grazed plots. In contrast, rainfall manipulation had no impact on dominance in either fenced or grazed plots. The interaction of grazing and rainfall manipulation is complex and will require additional survey campaigns to create a complete picture of the implications for savannah structure and composition.

Objective:To investigate the anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects of the ethanol extract of leaves of Helianthus annus L.(***) in acclimatized Wistar ***:It was undertaken using the albumin induced paw edema model of inflammation as well as both the hotplate and tail immersion analgesic test *** of the extract tested in experimental rats were 0.5 g/kg,2 g/kg and 4 g/kg while negative and positive control rats received distilled water and indomethacin ***:It was shown that treatment with the tested doses of the extract effectively inhibited paw edema induced by egg *** effect was comparable if not better than the observations made in rats treated with 10 mg/kg of indomethacin *** with the extract was also observed to have significantly increased the mean tolerance time of rats to thermal noxious stimuli compared to control animals that had distilled water and appeared to be more effective than 10 mg/kg of indomethacin ***: These observations confirmed the presence of a strong anti-inflammatory and anti-noiciceptive activity in the ethanol extract of the leaves of *** and therefore validated the folkloric use of the leaves of this plant in treatment of pro-inflammatory,post traumatic situations.

Insulin-like growth factor-I （IGF-I） regulates cell growth, survival, and differentiation by acting on the IGF-I receptor, （IGF-IR）-a tyrosine kinase receptor, which elicits diverse intracellular signaling responses. All skeletal cells express IGF-I and IGF-IR. Recent studies using tissue/cell-specific gene knockout mouse models and cell culture techniques have clearly demonstrated that locally produced IGF-I is more critical than the systemic IGF-I in supporting embryonic and postnatal skeletal development and bone remodeling. Local IGF-I/IGF-IR signaling promotes the growth, survival and differentiation of chondrocytes and osteo- blasts, directly and indirectly, by altering other autocrine/paracrine signaling pathways in cartilage and bone, and by enhancing interactions among these skeletal cells through hormonal and physical means. Moreover, local IGF-I/IGF-IR signaling is critical for the anabolic bone actions of growth hormone and parathyroid hormone. Herein, we review evidence supporting the actions of local IGF-I/IGF-IR in the above aspects of skeletal development and remodeling.

Vertical electrical sounding（VES） was carried out in northern part of Paiko, North Central Nigeria, using Abem terrameter model SAS 4000 to determine the subsurface layer parameters（resistivities, depths and thickness） employed in delineating the groundwater potential of the area. A total of six transverses with ten VES stations along each traverse, at intervals of 50 m were investigated. It has a maximum current electrode separation（AB/2） of 100 m. Three to four distinct geoelectric layers were observed, namely, the top layer, the weathered layer, the fractured/fresh layer, and the fresh basement layer. The observed frequencies in curve types include 21% of H, 4.2% of HA, 2.4% of K, 4.2% of A, 1.67% of KH and 3% of HK. Eight VES stations were delineated as ground water potentials of the area, with third and fourth layer resistivities ranging from 191 to 398 ？·m. depths range from 13.60 to 36.60 m and thickness varies from 9.23 to 30.51 m. A correlation of the borehole log with the VES lithology is in agreement. Viable boreholes for good portable water should be sited at VES stations J8 and J10 having a fine aquifer at a depth of 36.60 and 17.80 m respectively with thickness of 30.51 and 15.07 m, respectively.

In a recent paper published in Science Advances,Leneva et al.1 present cryo-electron tomography structures of assembling metazoan and fungal core retromer complexes(VPS29/VPS35/VPS26)on membranes enriched in Фx(L/M/V)motif(where Ф is a bulky aromatic residue)-containing cargo and sorting nexin 3(SNX3).The structures suggest that retromer forms a conserved arch-like scaffold that can incorporate different types of membrane adaptors and *** surprisingly,the SNX3-reotrmer complex is sufficient to induce membrane curvature and tabulation,in the absence of classical membrane curvature drivers,such as bin/amphiphysin/rvs-domain-containing sorting nexin protein(SNX-BARs).

In a recent study published in Cell1 and two bioRxiv pre-prints,2,3 three studies investigate the structure of the endosomal Commander complex through a combination of X-ray crystal-lography,cryogenic-electron microscopy(Cryo-EM),Alphafold predictions and extensive site-directed mutagenesis(Fig.1a),which sheds lights on the molecular characteristics of this evolutionarily-conserved protein machinery,and enables the mapping of mutations causing X-linked intellectual disability(XILd)and Ritscher-Schinzel syndrome(RSS).When proteins enter the endosomal network,they are either transported to lysosome for degradation,or recycled to the plasma membrane or the trans-Golgi network for *** protein machineries are essential for the process,including Retromer,Commander,and several members of the sorting nexin(SNX)*** genes are highly conserved in metazoa and can be found in almost all tissues and cells.
