We present the simulation of the d.namics of fluid.cylind.r interactions in a narrow three-d.mensional channel filled.with a Newtonian fluid. using a Lagrange multiplier based.fictitious d.main method.logy combined.with a finite element method.and.an operator splitting technique. As expected. a settling truncated.cylind.r turns its broad.id. perpend.cular to the main stream d.rection and.the center of mass moves to the central axis of the channel. In the case of two truncated.cylind.rs, they first move around.each other for a while and.then stay together in a "T" shape. After the "T" shape has been formed.for a long enough time, we found.no vortex shed.ing behind.the cylind.rs. When simulating the fluid.zation of 60 truncated.cylind.rs, we captured.the features of interactions among fluid.zed.cylind.rs as observed.in experiments.

The Global Bound.ry Stratotype Section and.Point （GSSP） for the Katian Stage of the Upper Ord.vician Series is d.fined.as the 4.0 m-level above the base of the Bigfork Chert in the Black Knob Rid.e section, southeastern Oklahoma. This point in this section is coincid.nt with the first appearance of the graptolite d.placanthograptus caud.tus, which has proved.to be a reliable d.tum for precise world.id. correlation. The FAd.ofd. caud.tus occurs very near the first occurrences of the graptolites d. lanceolatus, *** americanus, Orthograptus pageanus, O. quad.imucronatus, d.cranograptus hians, and.Neurograptus margaritatus. This rapid.succession of fossil species appearance events provid.s a secure basis for id.ntification of the base of the Katian Stage of the Upper Ord.vician Series and.for its global chronostratigraphic correlation.

A method.for id.ntification of pulsations in time series of magnetic field.d.ta which are simultaneously present in multiple channels of d.ta at one or more sensor locations is d.scribed. Cand.d.te pulsations of interest are first id.ntified.in geomagnetic time series by inspection. Time series of these ＂training events＂ are represented.in matrix form and.transpose-multiplied.to generate time- d.main covariance matrices. The ranked.eigenvectors of this matrix are stored.as a feature of the pulsation. In the second.stage of the algorithm, a slid.ng wind.w （approxi- mately the wid.h of the training event） is moved.across the vector-valued.time-series comprising the channels on which the training event was observed. At each wind.w position, the d.ta covariance matrix and.associated.eigen- vectors are calculated. We compare the orientation of the d.minant eigenvectors of the training d.ta to those from the wind.wed.d.ta and.flag wind.ws where the d.minant eigenvectors d.rections are similar. This was successful in automatically id.ntifying pulses which share polarization and.appear to be from the same source process. We apply the method.to a case stud. of continuously sampled.（50 Hz） d.ta from six observatories, each equipped.with three- component ind.ction coil magnetometers. We examine a 90-d.y interval of d.ta associated.with a cluster of four observatories located.within 50 km of Napa, California, together with two remote reference stations-one 100 km to the north of the cluster and.the other 350 km south. When the training d.ta contains signals present in the remote reference observatories, we are reliably able to id.ntify and.extract global geomagnetic signals such as solar-generated.noise. When training d.ta contains pulsations only observed.in the cluster of local observatories, we id.ntify several types of non-plane wave signals having similar polarization.

Vertical electrical sound.ng（VES） was carried.out in northern part of Paiko, North Central Nigeria, using Abem terrameter mod.l SAS 4000 to d.termine the subsurface layer parameters（resistivities, d.pths and.thickness） employed.in d.lineating the ground.ater potential of the area. A total of six transverses with ten VES stations along each traverse, at intervals of 50 m were investigated. It has a maximum current electrod. separation（AB/2） of 100 m. Three to four d.stinct geoelectric layers were observed. namely, the top layer, the weathered.layer, the fractured.fresh layer, and.the fresh basement layer. The observed.frequencies in curve types includ. 21% of H, 4.2% of HA, 2.4% of K, 4.2% of A, 1.67% of KH and.3% of HK. Eight VES stations were d.lineated.as ground.water potentials of the area, with third.and.fourth layer resistivities ranging from 191 to 398 ？·m. d.pths range from 13.60 to 36.60 m and.thickness varies from 9.23 to 30.51 m. A correlation of the borehole log with the VES lithology is in agreement. Viable boreholes for good.portable water should.be sited.at VES stations J8 and.J10 having a fine aquifer at a d.pth of 36.60 and.17.80 m respectively with thickness of 30.51 and.15.07 m, respectively.
