Slag carry-over during the draining of molten steel from a teeming ladle is numerically studied here. Two-phase isothermal transient 3D Computational Fluid Dynamics simulations were employed to simulate the draining process. Two nozzle diameters, two nozzle positions and three slag heights were considered. From mass balances, the slag carry-over in terms of mass flow rate was obtained for each of the above variables. Besides, the draining times of the teeming ladle were estimated from theoretical considerations and CDF simulations, and compared.

BACKGROUND The influence of Helicobacter-pylori(H.pylori)infection and the characteristics of gastric cancer(GC)on tumor-infiltrating lymphocyte(TIL)levels has not been extensively studied.Analysis of infiltrating-immune-cell subtypes as well as survival is necessary to obtain comprehensive information.AIM To determine the rates of deficient mismatch-repair(dMMR),HER2-status and H.pylori infection and their association with TIL levels in GC.METHODS Samples from 503 resected GC tumors were included and TIL levels were evaluated following the international-TILs-working-group recommendations with assessment of the intratumoral(IT),stromal(ST)and invasive-border(IB)compartments.The density of CD3,CD8 and CD163 immune cells,and dMMR and HER2-status were determined by immunohistochemistry(IHC).H.pylori infection was evaluated by routine histology and quantitative PCR(qPCR)in a subset of samples.RESULTS dMMR was found in 34.4%,HER2+in 5%and H.pylori-positive in 55.7%of samples.High IT-TIL was associated with grade-3(P=0.038),while ST-TIL with grade-1(P<0.001),intestinal-histology(P<0.001)and no-recurrence(P=0.003).dMMR was associated with high TIL levels in the ST(P=0.019)and IB(P=0.01)compartments,and STCD3(P=0.049)and ST-CD8(P=0.05)densities.HER2-was associated with high IT-CD8(P=0.009).H.pylorinegative was associated with high IT-TIL levels(P=0.009)when assessed by routine-histology,and with high TIL levels in the 3 compartments(P=0.002-0.047)and CD8 density in the IT and ST compartments(P=0.001)when assessed by qPCR.A longer overall survival was associated with low IT-CD163(P=0.003)and CD8/CD3(P=0.001 in IT and P=0.002 in ST)and high IT-CD3(P=0.021),ST-CD3(P=0.003)and CD3/CD163(P=0.002).CONCLUSION TIL levels were related to dMMR and H.pylori-negativity.Low CD8/CD3 and high CD163/CD3 were associated with lower recurrence and longer survival.

The Monte Desert is characterized by a great diversity of landforms created with fluvial， alluvial which the vegetation patterns are related to. The present work has the following objectives: 1: determine whether topographical attributes， surface characteristics， soil properties and vegetation patterns vary between alluvial landforms， and 2: define whether morphometric， soil and surface properties influence vegetation patterns along alluvial landscape. Morphometric data were obtained by processing a 5 m digital elevation model. The coverage of rock fragments， fine sediments and mulch was quantified. Observations and descriptions of the soil profiles were restricted to the uppermost 50 cm. Vegetation properties were calculated using a Point Quadrat Method. The relationship between variables was evaluated through multivariate statistical analysis. The main results show the presence of 45 plant species distributed in 19 families， where shrubs are dominant. The wind effect， topographic wetness and dissection of the landscape are limiting factors of diversity. The coverage of superficial rock fragments influence vegetation coverage through the distribution and availability of rainwater. Furthermore， the different soil textures reveal that the silt content favors an increase in vegetation coverage. The presence of V horizon could condition the installation and development of vegetation in the early stages of growth.

Due to environmental policies and economic reasons， the water used in some flotation operations of complex sulfide ores is recirculated causing the ion concentration of some species to increase over time， affecting the flotation of the minerals of interest. In the above context， this work presents an experimental and thermodynamic analysis of the treatment of synthetic solutions with a high content of calcium and sulfate ions. The study focused on evaluating the use of two aluminum compounds for the precipitation of Ca;and SO;in the form of ettringite. The amorphous aluminum hydroxide was found to be more efficient than the crystalline one， giving rise to 83% calcium and 91% sulfate removals. The XRD analysis of the solids obtained showed to be ettringite the main reaction product， accompanied by small amounts of calcite， due to the absorption of atmospheric carbon dioxide. The final solution after the chemical treatment showed residual calcium and sulfate concentrations below 200 mg/L. Finally， the kinetics of calcium removal appeared to correspond to a second order reaction with respect to calcium concentration， with an apparent activation energy of 53.5 kJ/mol， which may suggest that the ettringite precipitation process is governed by the chemical reaction.

Applying constant precipitation intensity,which does not occur in natural events,is one of the main limitations concerning rainfall simulators in soil erosion studies.The present work evaluated the InfiAsper rainfall simulator operating with a new control panel to program rainfalls with different precipitation intensities(PI).Infiltration rates and soil and water losses were evaluated in a Distrophic Acrisol(clay loam texture)with simulated rainfalls of 30 mm and duration of 40 min,considering advanced(AD),intermediate(IN),delayed(DE),and inverted intermediate(II)patterns,all with PI peaks of 110 mm h^(-1),and a constant(CT)pattern.The experimental design was in randomized blocks with five treatments(rainfall patterns)and experimental units measuring 2.5×2.5 m.The simulator worked satisfactorily,applying the rainfall according to the preconfigured programs.The simulated rainfall with the CT and II patterns did not promote runoff nor soil loss.Infiltration and runoff rates varied according to the applied rainfall pattern,reaching 97.8 and 27.3 mm h^(-1)(AD),82.1 and 39.5 mm h^(-1)(IN),and 76.2 and 49.7 mm h^(-1)(DE),respectively.Soil loss and surface runoff totaled each 4.77 g m^(-2)and 3.9 mm(AD),6.70 g m^(-2)and 6.8 mm(IN),and 6.03 g m^(-2)and 7.0 mm(DE).The InfiAsper simulator modified enables varying precipitation intensity besides obtaining satisfactory results in the field and information consistent with the expected characteristics of natural rainfall patterns.In the intermediate and delayed rainfall patterns,soil and water losses are higher than in the advanced.

IL-10 and TNF-α promoter haplotypes are associated with childhood Crohn’s disease location

AIM: To determine the distribution and frequencies of the genotypes and haplotypes of the genes encoding for the glucocorticoid receptor (GR), the tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and the interleukin (IL)-10 in childhood Crohn’s disease (CD) and to assess the impact of the corresponding DNA variants on clinical and disease phenotypes. METHODS: Ten variants in GR, TNF-α and IL-10 were genotyped in 113 childhood CD cases and 95 healthy subjects, both of French-Canadian origin. RESULTS: For the GR polymorphisms (R23K and N363S) and IL-10 variants in the 5’flanking region (-1082 G > A, -819 T > C and -592 A > C), no difference was observed in allele and genotype frequencies between CD patients and controls. At the haplotype level, we found three IL-10 haplotypes previously described in Caucasians (GCC, ACC and ATA) and three novel haplotypes only present in IBD patients. When we analyzed the haplotype distribution with the anatomical location of the disease, the GCC haplotype was associated with the colonic and the ACC haplotype with the terminal ileum location, respectively. The genotyping of fi ve polymorphisms in the promoter region of the TNF-α gene (-1031 T > C, -863 A > C, -857 T > C, -308 A > G and -238 A > G) revealed a significant overrepresentation of homozygous -1031 CC among CD patients (OR = 9.9) and an association with the colonic location. For TNF-α, eleven haplotypes were inferred, including two frequent ones, TCCGG and CACGG, which were significantly observed more frequently in controls and cases, respectively.CONCLUSION: This is one of the fi rst studies investigating the association between haplotype structure and disease location in a CD pediatric cohort. Our results will help to increase our understanding of the genetic determinants of childhood CD.

Paralichthys adspersus is a native species from the Pacific coast of South America that is of great economic importance for Peruvian aquaculture.Even though establishing sustainable farming depends on avoiding irreversible damage to the population gene pool due to processes such as inbreeding,studies focusing on genetically characterizing farmed stocks are yet to be documented.By using ten microsatellite loci on captive and wild individuals of P.adspersus,we successfully characterized the only commercial broodstock of this species in Peru by means of determining the genetic diversity and inferring relatedness.Although most microsatellite loci showed deviations from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium,the genetic diversity levels in the commercial broodstock were considered healthy compared to those obtained for a wild population,with an average number of alleles of 17.40,an effective number of alleles of 9.14,and an observed and expected heterozygosity of 0.49 and 0.87.No significant differences between the broodstock and the wild population in terms of genetic diversity were observed.The fixation index and analysis of molecular variance also indicated a low rate of differentiation between both populations.In relatedness estimation,the analysis based on five method-of-moment estimators and a maximum-likelihood estimator showed the category“unrelated”as being the most probable relationship among the individuals within the commercial broodstock.Our findings reveal the conservation of genetic diversity in this population and outline potential breeding strategies that hatchery managers could use to minimize the loss of genetic diversity and long-term inbreeding.This could help establish proper genetic management in captive populations of P.adspersus and should apply to other captive stocks where pedigree information is lacking.

Micropeptin EI-964 is a cyclic peptide compound isolated from a marine cyanobacterium with potent inhibitory activity against serine proteases, particularly chymotrypsin and trypsin. It has shown promising activity against various cancer cell lines, making it a candidate for drug development. The unique structure and activity of Micropeptin EI-964 make it a promising lead compound for the development of novel serine protease inhibitors and anti-cancer drugs. Computational Chemistry and Molecular Modeling techniques can provide valuable insights into the chemical reactivity and pharmaceutical properties of Micropeptin EI-964, guiding the design and development of new compounds with enhanced bioactivity and improved drug-like properties.
