Association between sarcopenic obesity and higher risk of type 2 diabetes in adults: A systematic review and meta-analysis

BACKGROUND The coexistence of sarcopenia and obesity is referred to as sarcopenic obesity(SO)and it has been hypothesized that the two components of SO may synergistically increase their negative effects. However, many uncertainties still surround this condition especially with regard to its potential negative effects on health *** To conduct a systematic review to determine the prevalence of sarcopenia among adults with overweight and obesity and to investigate whether SO was associated with a higher risk of type 2 diabetes(T2 D).METHODS This study was conducted in adherence with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Literature searches, study selection, methodology development and quality appraisal were performed independently by two authors and the data were collated by means of metaanalysis and narrative *** Of the 606 articles retrieved, 11 studies that comprised a total of 60118 adults with overweight and obesity of both genders met the inclusion criteria and were reviewed, revealing two main findings. First, the overall prevalence of sarcopenia is 43% in females and 42% in males who are with overweight and ***, the presence of SO increases the risk of T2D by 38% with respect to those without SO(OR = 1.38, 95%CI: 1.27-1.50).CONCLUSION A high prevalence of sarcopenia has been found among adults with overweight and obesity regardless of their gender and this condition seems to be associatedwith a higher risk of T2D. Clinician should be aware of this scenario in their clinical practice for the better management of both obesity and T2D.

Therapeutic Use of Hyaluronidase in Obstetrics

Introduction: Hyaluronidases are a group of enzymes that permit greater diffusion of fluid through the tissues. These enzymes have the ability to reduce the viscosity of hyaluronic acid and increase cellular membrane and blood vessel permeability. This review discusses the indication, usage, effects, and safety of hyaluronidases in obstetrics. Materials and Methods: MEDLINE/ PubMed and the Cochrane Library were searched using the following terms: (“hyaluronidase” [Title/Abstract]) OR (“hyaluronidases” [Title/Abstract]) AND (“therapeutic use” [Title/Abstract]) OR (“therapeutic uses” [Title/Abstract]) OR (“perineal trauma” [Title/Abstract]) OR (“perineal tear” [Title/Abstract]) OR (“cervical ripening” [Title/Abstract]). Results: This review included four randomized controlled trials (RCT) that randomized a total of 642 pregnant women and two interventional non-RCTs that included a total of 2824 pregnant women. The data from two RCTs suggested that the incidence of perineal trauma was significantly lower in the intervention (perineal hyaluronidase injection in stage two of labor) than the control group (no intervention). However, both groups did not differ significantly in the incidence of first- and second-degree tears. Similarly, no significant difference in the incidence of episiotomy was found between both groups. In one interventional non-RCT, dana;">the administration of intracervical hyaluronidase was associated with a statistically significant acceleration and shortening of labor by approximately 1.95 hours after the injection of intracervical hyaluronidase. Preliminary study on modelling, fabrication by photo-chemical etching and in vivo testing of biodegradable magnesium AZ31 stents

Magnesium metal(Mg)is a promising material for stent applications due to its biocompatibility and ability to be resorbed by the *** of stents by laser cutting has become an industry *** alternative approach uses photo-chemical etching to transfer a pattern of the stent onto a Mg *** this study,we present three stages of creating and validating a stent prototype,which includes design and simulation using finite element analysis(FEA),followed by fabrication based on AZ31 alloy and,finally,in vivo testing in peripheral arteries of domestic *** to the preliminary character of this study,only six stents were implanted in two domestic farm pigs weighing 25-28 kg and they were evaluated after 28 days,with an interim follow-up on day *** left and right superficial femoral,the left iliac,and the right renal artery were selected for this *** diameters of the stented artery segments were evaluated at the time of implantation,on day 14 and then,finally,on day 28,by quantitative vessel analysis(QVA)using fluoroscopic *** Coherence Tomography(OCT)imaging displayed some malposition,breaks,stacking,and protrusion into the lumen at the proximal,distal,and mid-sections of the stented *** stents degraded with time,but simultaneously became embedded in the *** 28 days,the animals were euthanized,and explanted vessels were fixed for micro-CT imaging and histology ***-CT imaging revealed stent morphological and volumetric changes due to the in-body *** in vivo corrosion rate of 0.75 mm/year was obtained by the CT *** histology suggested no-life threatening effects,although moderate injury,inflammation,and endothelialization scores were observed.

Effect of brimonidine tartrate on basophil activation in glaucoma patients

AIM:To evaluate the mechanism of which brimonidine tartrate 0.15%causes clinical ***:A prospective case-control study comparing 8 glaucoma patients with clinical hypersensitivity to brimonidine to a control group consisting 13 healthy *** samples were stimulated with brimonidine 0.15%,timolol 0.5%or brimonidine tartrate/timolol maleate 0.2%/0.5%.Premixed antibodies(CD63/FITC and aIgE/PE)were added for direct staining and whole-blood samples were lysed,fixed and analyzed by a flow *** basophil population was defined by high IgE cell *** was identified by the expression of the activation molecule ***:Basophil activation was not significant when comparing percent of activated basophils of patients and healthy controls after exposure to brimonidine(2.58%,2.45%,respectively,P=0.72).There was a significant suppression of basophil activation when a combination of brimonidine-timolol(0.87%)was compared to timolol(2.27%;P=0.012)and to brimonidine alone(2.58%;P=0.017).CONCLUSION:The results of our study do not support the hypothesis that brimonidine induces an immediate allergic *** activation was suppressed by the presence ofβ-blockers in patients hypersensitive to brimonidine and in healthy *** finding indicates that timolol suppress brimonidine drug reaction by a different mechanism.

Characterization of the interaction of nanobubble ultrasound contrast agents with human blood components

Nanoscale ultrasound contrast agents,or nanobubbles,are being explored in preclinical applications ranging from vascular and cardiac imaging to targeted drug delivery in *** sub-micron particles are approximately 10x smaller than clinically available *** allows them to effectively traverse compromised physiological barriers and circulate for extended periods of *** various aspects of nanobubble behavior have been previously examined,their behavior in human whole blood has not yet been ***,herein we examined,for the first time,the short and long-term effects of blood components on nanobubble acoustic *** observed differences in the kinetics of backscatter from nanobubble suspensions in whole blood compared to bubbles in phosphate buffered saline(PBS),plasma,or red blood cell solutions(RBCs).Specifically,after introducing nanobubbles to fresh human whole blood,signal enhancement,or the magnitude of nonlinear ultrasound signal,gradually increased by 22.8±13.1%throughout our experiment,with peak intensity reached within 145 *** contrast,nanobubbles in PBS had a stable signal with negligible change in intensity(􀀀1.7±3.2%)over 8 *** the same conditions,microbubbles made with the same lipid formulation showed a􀀀56.8±6.1%decrease in enhancement in whole *** confocal,fluorescent,and scanning electron microscopy analysis revealed attachment of the nanobubbles to the surface of RBCs,suggesting that direct interactions,or hitchhiking,of nanobubbles on RBCs in the presence of plasma may be a possible mechanism for the observed *** phenomenon could be key to extending nanobubble circulation time and has broad implications in drug delivery,where RBC interaction with nanoparticles could be exploited to improve delivery efficiency.

Health Promotion in Ecuador: A Solution for a Failing System

In 2008, the newly written Ecuadorian Constitution guaranteed access to healthcare for all citizens. Consequently, a vast amount of resources have been directed toward rebuilding the public healthcare system, which was in shambles due to the effects of neoliberalism. Although national healthcare studies show positive outcomes, community-based research studies from an impoverished rural barrio in southern Ecuador indicate that the public healthcare system has been unable to address a health epidemic. Based on several years of fieldwork, we argue that the failure originates from the continued functioning of the biomedical model of healthcare as the dominant health discourse in Ecuador. The ensuing result has been the construction of health system governed by an “administrative state” that enforces health policies from the top-down and delivers “episodic” emergency-style care. Accordingly, we maintain that the Ministry of Health (MOH) should create a nationwide community-based health promoter program guided by the principles of health promotion.

Comparison between Neuman(1975) and Jacob(1946) application for analysing pumping test data of unconfined aquifer

Pumping test of a water table aquifer is carried out to estimate the aquifer parameters, the obtained data were analysed through the solution of both Neuman(1975) and Jacob(1946) methods through AQTESOLV and Spreadsheet programs, the results of each methods are compared to evaluate the applicability and accuracy of the solution theoretically and practically. In the paper an example is presented, which is conducted for a constant rate pumping test from Ohio, in Fairborn(near Dayton), and it supplied by S.E. Norris(U.S. Geological Survey, Columbus, Ohio). The main objective of this study is to introduce both program and the way of the applications, and compare the results and the hand on of both programs in the field.

Polymer-mediated immunocamouflage of red blood cells: Effects of polymer size on antigenic and immunogenic recognition of allogeneic donor blood cells

Developing a practical means of reducing alloimmunization in chronically transfused patients would be of significant clinical benefit. Immunocamouflaging red blood ceils （RBCs） by membrane grafting of methoxypoly（ethylene glycol）（mPEG） may reduce the risk of allo-immunization. The results of this study showed that antibody recognition of non-ABO antigens was sig- nificantly reduced in an mPEG-dose- and polymer size-dependent manner, with higher molecular weight mPEGs providing better immunoprotection. Furthermore, in vivo immunogenicity was significantly reduced in mice serially transfused with mPEG-modified xenogeneic （sheep; sRBCs）, allogeneic （C57B1/6）, or syngeneic （Balb/c） RBCs. Following a primary transfu- sion of sRBCs, mice receiving mPEG-sRBCs showed a 〉90% reduction in anti-sRBC IgG antibody levels. After two transfusions, mice receiving mPEG-sRBCs showed reductions of 〉80% in anti-sRBC IgG levels. Importantly, mPEG-modified autologous cells did not induce neoantigens or an immune （IgG or IgM） response. These data suggest that the global immuno- camouflage of RBCs by polymer grafting may provide a safe and cost-effective means of reducing therisk of alloimmunization.
