A Comparative Study of Antioxidant Activities between Fresh and Dry Mushrooms in the genera <i>Cantharellus</i>and <i>Afrocantharellus</i>from Tanzania

Cantharellus and Afrocantharellus mushrooms are widely consumed in both fresh and dry forms. However, their antioxidant and whether their values changing with drying processes are not known. This study establishes their values and the effect of sun drying on their quality and quantity. Methanolic extracts of five Cantharellus and two Afrocantharellus species were investigated. The investigation used (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical) DPPH as a substrate to determine radical scavenging abilities. Further quantitative analyses for carotenoids, flavonoid, total phenolic compounds and vitamin C content were done using spectrophotometric assay at 515 nm. Comparatively, fresh mushroom had higher vitamin C and Lycopene contents than their dry counterparts with β-carotene. Flavonoid and phenolic compounds were higher in dry forms than those in their fresh counterparts. Radical scavenging ability also varied with fresh forms depicting higher activity compared to dry forms. The variation was low in Afrocantharellus species (0.8% and 0.99%) while it was higher in Cantharellus species (24.12% and 7.52%). The highest ability was observed in fresh forms of Cantharellus pseudocibarius (EC50 50 = 0.4 mg/ml) was from dry form of Cantharellus rufopunctatus. This shows that studied mushrooms are rich in antioxidants and their quality and quantities are affected differently in both forms. Both dry and fresh mushrooms are potential sources of natural antioxidants. The portrayed high scavenging ability by these mushrooms envisages promoting them into potential nutraceutics.

CURLY LEAF Regulates MicroRNA Activity by Controlling ARgONAUTE 1 Degradation in Plants

CURLY LEAF ( CLF) encodes the methyltransferase subunit of the Polycomb Repressor Complex 2 (PRC2), which regulates the expression of target genes through H3K27 trimethylation. We isolated a new CLF mutant allele ( clf-78) using a genetic screen designed to identify microRNA (miRNA) deficient mutants. CLF mutant plants showed impaired miRNA activity caused by increased ubiquitination and enhanced degradation of ARgONAUTE 1 (AgO1) in specific tissues. Such CLF-mediated AgO1 regulation was evident when plants were exposed to UV radiation, which caused increased susceptibility of clf mutants to some UV-induced responses. Furthermore, we showed that CLF directly regulates FBW2, which in turn triggers AgO1 degradation in the clf mutants. Interestingly, AgO1 bound to a target appeared particularly prone to degradation in the mutant plants, a process that was exacerbated when the complex bound a non-cleavable target. Thus, prolonged AgO1–target interaction seems to favor AgO1 degradation, suggesting that non-cleavable miRNA targets may overcome translation inhibition by modulating AgO1 stability in plants.

Hannah Arendt Reconsidered： Collaboration and the Banality of Evil in Jonathan Littell＇s The Kindly Ones

Hannah Arendt＇s 1963 study ＂Eichmann in Jerusalem＂, based on the former Nazi＇s 1961 trial, broached two highly controversial topics： The first was her theory of the banality of evil--the uncomfortable moral scenario that leads ordinary individuals, for the most trivial and arbitrary reasons, to commit heinous atrocities; and the second was her fierce condemnation of Jewish collaboration with the Nazis. This paper argues that the novelist Jonathan Littell＇s critically acclaimed best-seller The Kindly Ones （2010） provocatively revalorizes and builds upon these two aspects of Arendt＇s study： Firstly, it posits her theory of banality as a challenge to the comforting presupposition that terrible evils can only be committed by a minority of monstrous individuals, by suggesting instead that ＂normal＂ readers share the same capacity to commit atrocities as Nazis such as Eichmann. Secondly, the novel nuances Arendt＇s damning indictment of Jewish collaboration by regarding it as the inevitable consequence of the terrible predicament faced by Jews at that time. Finally, the paper concludes with Littell＇s consideration of banality as a phenomenon that not only invites an uncomfortable moral self-analysis, but also legitimises a return to a justice system based on the ancient greek model.

Testing of the Entangled QKD System EPR S405 Quelle (AIT) in Commercial 1550 nm Fiber Network

In this communication, we report results of running tests on standard telecommunication metropolitan network 1550 nm fiber applied to a quantum channel to EPR S405 Quelle prototype systems installed in National Laboratory for Quantum Technologies WUT and in CompSecur Wroclaw. Testing was carried out by means of the original design by us and applied special data card collecting parameters of functioning system allowing for assessment of quality of quantum channel. We have performed several trials using various configurations of standard 1550 nm fiber patch-cord up to length of 6.5 km with additional usage of various patch-cords with weldings and connectors which typically present in already installed commercial metropolitan communication networks. The implementation of this testing indicated that the rigorous maintenance of photon polarization is required for quantum information exchange upon EPR S405 Quelle functioning. The polarization of optical signal turned out to be, however, very unstable for the tested connection which resulted in very rapid QBER rise precluding practical usefulness of this connection for secure quantum exchange of cryptographic key over practically significant distances. We have identified that the main obstacle was the polarization decoherence caused by weldings and connectors in standard patch-cords and accidental strains in fibers as well as generally poor transmitting properties of 1550 nm fiber for much shorter wave-length photons used by the Quelle system. To maintain the quantum channel active, very frequent manual corrections of polarization control were required. So we expect that by design and application of an automatic polarization control module, one would stabilize visibility ratio and lower QBER to an acceptable level conditioning possible future implementation of entangled QKD system in commercial networks.

miR-200 family expression is downregulated upon neoplastic progression of Barrett's esophagus

AIM: To investigate miR-200 family expression in Barrett's epithelium, gastric and duodenal epithelia, and esophageal adenocarcinoma. METHODS: Real-time reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction was used to measure miR-200, ZEB1 and ZEB2 expression. Ingenuity Pathway Analysis of miR-200 targets was used to predict biological outcomes. RESULTS: Barrett's epithelium expressed lower levels of miR-141 and miR-200c than did gastric and duodenal epithelia (P guish Barrett's epithelium from gastric and duodenalepithelia, and which control apoptosis and proliferation. All miR-200 members were downregulated in adenocarcinoma (P gulated in non-invasive epithelium adjacent to adenocarcinoma (P gh-grade dysplastic cell lines than in a cell line derived from benign Barrett's epithelium. We observed signif icant inverse correlations between miR-200 family expression and ZEB1 and ZEB2 expression in Barrett's epithelium and esophageal adenocarcinoma (P ght contribute to the anti-apoptotic and proliferative phenotype of Barrett's epithelium and regulate key neoplastic processes in this epithelium.
