Correlationship between Diabetes Mellitus and Chronic Carbon Monoxide Intoxication

There is a data gap in the relationship between chronic carbon monoxide intoxication and diabetes mellitus manifestation. This study aims to investigate if a cause-effect relationship exists using rabbits as a choice animal model. A total of twenty rabbits were used for the study comprising equal age and weight-matched control and experimental groups. The experimental group was further divided into 10th day, 20th day and 30th CO intoxicated sub-groups. Vitreous and serum glucose, proteins, lipids, electrolytes and renal function parameters were measured using WHO-approved methods. One-way ANOVA (Post hoc-LSD) and Pearson correlational analysis were used for the data analysis. The result showed a progressive significant increase (p entrations of vitreous glucose, urea and creatinine in the experimental groups, while the concentrations of vitreous total cholesterol, triglyceride, total protein, globulins, sodium, potassium and pH decreased significantly. In the same vein, the concentrations of serum glucose, triglyceride, and sodium increased significantly (p ereas concentrations of serum cholesterol, total proteins, globulins, potassium, and pH activity decreased significantly. Correlational relationships were also observed between glucose and some associated parameters in the vitreous humour and serum. In conclusion, some of the vitreous and serum biochemical parameters altered followed a similar predictive pattern and usual pathophysiology of diabetes mellitus. Therefore, we found that chronic CO intoxication could be included amongst the environmental agents known to be a causative agent of diabetes mellitus.

Relative Dielectric Permittivity Variations during Compaction as a Mean of Compaction Quality Control: Case Study on Laterite Samples from Senegal

This study explores an alternative to the classical use of direct methods, as water content and dry density measurements, for compaction quality control. For this purpose, the dielectric properties of lateritic materials are determined by radar method and are compared with the permittivity determined from the Topp formula and from the CRIM model. This approach allowed to establish a relationship between the geotechnical properties determined during compaction such as dry density, water content or porosity with dielectric permittivity. The obtained results made it possible to determine an optimum dielectric permittivity corresponding to the optimum dry density and the optimum water content that could be used for non-destructive in situ compaction testing. Such an approach should improve the implementation and effectiveness of in situ compaction quality control of geotechnical infrastructures.

Incorporation of a nanotechnology-based additive in cementitious products for clay stabilisation

The mechanical performances and water retention characteristics of clays,stabilised by partial substitution of cement with by-products and inclusion of a nanotechnology-based additive called RoadCem(RC),are studied in this *** unconfined compression tests and one-dimensional oedometer swelling were performed after 7 d of curing to understand the influence of addition of 1%of RC material in the stabilised soils with the cement partially replaced by 49%,59%and 69%of ground granulated blast furnace slag(GBBS)or pulverised fuel ash(PFA).The moisture retention capacity of the stabilised clays was also explored using the soil-water retention curve(SWRC)from the measured *** confirmed an obvious effect of the use of RC with the obtained strength and swell properties of the stabilised clays suitable for road application at 50%replacement of *** outcome is associated with the in-depth and penetrating hydration of the cementitious materials by the RC and water which results in the production of needle-like matrix with interlocking filaments e a phenomenon referred to as the‘wrapping’*** the other hand,the SWRC used to describe the water holding capacity and corresponding swell mechanism of clays stabilised by a proportion of RC showed a satisfactory *** moisture retention of the RC-modified clays was initially higher but reduced subsequently as the saturation level increased with decreasing *** phenomenon confirmed that clays stabilised by including the RC are water-proof in nature,thus ensuring reduced porosity and suction even at reduced water ***,the stabilised clays with the combination of cement,GGBS and RC showed a better performance compared to those with the PFA included.

Minimum energy Requirement for Inducing Withdrawal Reflex in Millimeter Wave exposures

We consider the problem of inducing withdrawal reflex on a test subject via exposure to a millimeter wave beam. In our physical model, there are 10 physical parameters affecting the occurrence of withdrawal reflex. Our goal is to pinpoint the roles of these physical parameters in inducing withdrawal reflex. We first carry out non-dimensionalization to reduce the model to a non-dimensional system of only 3 composite parameters: non-dimensional beam power density, non-dimensional beam radius, and non-dimensional exposure time. If the beam power is kept on and steady, withdrawal reflex occurs eventually;the shortest exposure time for inducing withdrawal reflex corresponds to the smallest energy consumption at the given power density and beam radius. In the 2D space of power density and beam radius, the overall minimum energy occurs at the corner of very large power density and very small beam radius, which also produces a very large value of maximum skin temperature and a long time to withdrawal reflex. To reduce the burn injury risk, we introduce a cap on the maximum skin temperature. At each given total beam power, we carry out optimizations with respect to the beam radius, constrained by the prescribed temperature cap. The energy consumption varies negatively with the prescribed temperature cap: a lower temperature cap can be accommodated only with a higher energy consumption via the venue of a larger beam radius. The energy consumption is relatively flat with respect to the total beam power and attains a minimum at a moderately large total beam power. The time to withdrawal reflex is approximately inversely proportional to the total beam power. Our analysis demonstrates that a moderately large total beam power is a good compromise to achieve both low energy consumption and short time to withdrawal reflex.

Chemical geothermometry:application to mud volcanic waters of the Caucasus region

The generation temperatures of gas-water fluids released from mud volcanoes in different provinces of the Caucasian region have been constrained using Mg/Li(T_(Mg/Li))chemical *** volcanic fluids in the Taman Peninsula(Kerch-Taman mud volcanic province)were generated at temperatures(T_(Mg/Li))from 41℃ to 137℃.The depths of the respective mud reservoirs estimated from T_(Mg/Li) values and local geothermal gradient are in a range of 1.0 to 3.4 km which spans the Maykop Formation of marine *** the South Caspian province,the T_(Mg/Li) values of waters vary from 18℃ to 137℃ and the respective root depths HMg/Li of mud volcanoes range from∼0.85 to 6.5 *** obtained T_(Mg/Li) values for the analyzed mud volcanic waters from Caucasian provinces are in positive correlation with HCO3^(−)contents and water oxygen isotope compositions(δ^(18)OH_(2)O andΔδ^(18)OH_(2)O)and in high negative correlation with Cl^(−).The increase of T_(Mg/Li) toward the Greater Caucasus Range,as well as the lateral T_(Mg/Li) patterns in the Taman and South Caspian mud volcanic provinces,support the idea that mud volcanic fluids generate at temperatures increasing progressively toward the Alpine orogenic belt.

Background:Complete nuclear disassembly of superhard cataracts cannot always be achieved by phaco chop,which is considered one of the best techniques for dealing with hard *** present a phaco chopprogressive cracking technique to divide superhard cataracts *** presentation:We presented a case of cataract with over Grade V nucleus sclerosis and very low density of corneal endothelial cell(812 cells/mm^(2)).By performing the cataract surgery with our phaco chop-progressive cracking technique,the corneal endothelial cells were well protected and the patient’s visual acuity was markedly improved from finger counting at 40 cm to 20/200 the day after surgery without obvious corneal ***:Although an initial learning curve was needed,this phaco chop-progressive cracking technique could be of particular benefit to the superhard cataract,especially in patients with low density of corneal endothelial cells.

Level Crossing of N*(1535)-hole and η Modes and Partial Restoration of Chiral Symmetry in η-mesic Nuclei

We investigate the properties of the η-nucleus interaction by postulating the N*(1535) dominance for ηN system. Since the mass gap of N* and N is very close to the η meson mass,there is the possibility of the level crossing between the N*-h and η modes in finite density. We postulate the N*(1535) resonance for the ηN system and consider quite distinct N* properties in finite density which are predicted by two independent chiral models. We find that we can obtain clearer information on the in-medium N* properties and also on the η-nucleus interaction through the formation of the η-mesic nuclei by (π,N) reactions under the appropriate experimental conditions,which can be performed at existing and/or forthcoming facilities like J-PARC.
