Removal of cu and Ni by Free and Immobilized Microalgae

The present investigation evaluated the effectiveness of chlorella cells in concentrating cu and Ni in their cells and thereby removing the two metals from solution. The removal efficiency of the two metals by free and immobilized algal cells were further studied. (1) Four types of chlorella cells, namely chlorella pyrenoidosa (26) (from carolina Biological Supplies company), chlorella hKBc-1 and-2 (isolated from a polluted stream receiving wastewater from several electroplating factories) and chlorella hKBc-3 (from a clean water pond) were subjected to different concentrations of cu and Ni accordingly. It was revealed that chlorella hKBc-1 was the most tolerant species tocu and Ni as reflected by their highest values of 48 h and 96 h 'highest no effect concentrations' (The highest concentration of the tested substance that does not inhibit the growth rate of the alga: cu 2 and Ni 10 mg/1 at 48 h, cu 2 and Ni 5 at 96 h). This was followed by c. pyrenoidosa (26) and then c. hKBc-2 while c. hKBc-3 had the lowest tolerance to the two metals (cu 0.5 and Ni 2 at 48 h; cu 0.5 and Ni 1 mg/1 at 96 h). (2) It was further revealed that c. hKBc-1 had higher concentration factors and removal efficiencies of Ni (734-963 mg/1, 16.3-18.7%) and c. hKBc-2 had higher concentration factors and removal efficiencies of cu (2316-2839 mg/1, 53.7-66%) when exposed to lower concentrations of cu (0.5,1 and 2 mg/1) and Ni (5, 10 and 13 mg/1). (3) By treating the free and immobilized algal cells (algal cells entrapped in alginate beads) with different concentrations of cu and Ni, it was observed that free cells had higher concentration factors and removal efficiencies when compared with immobilized cells (free cells: cu 1577-3056 mg/1, 24.2-71.4%; Ni 355-849 mg/1, 4.8-18.7%; immobilized cells: cu 453-935 mg/1, 13.9-53.2%; Ni 244-486 mg/1, 3.2-11.9%).

As the risks associated with air turbulence are intensified by climate change and the growth of the aviation industry,it has become imperative to monitor and mitigate these threats to ensure civil aviation *** eddy dissipation rate(EdR)has been established as the standard metric for quantifying turbulence in civil *** study aims to explore a universally applicable symbolic classification approach based on genetic programming to detect turbulence anomalies using quick access recorder(QAR)*** detection of atmospheric turbulence is approached as an anomaly detection *** evaluations demonstrate that this approach performs on par with direct EdR calculation methods in identifying turbulence ***,comparisons with alternative machine learning techniques indicate that the proposed technique is the optimal methodology currently *** summary,the use of symbolic classification via genetic programming enables accurate turbulence detection from QAR data,comparable to that with established EdR approaches and surpassing that achieved with machine learning *** finding highlights the potential of integrating symbolic classifiers into turbulence monitoring systems to enhance civil aviation safety amidst rising environmental and operational hazards.

Spreadsheets are very common for information processing to support decision making by both professional developers and non-technical end ***,business intelligence and artificial intelligence are increasingly popular in the industry nowadays,where spreadsheets have been used as,or integrated into,intelligent or expert systems in various application ***,it has been repeatedly reported that faults often exist in operational spreadsheets,which could severely compromise the quality of conclusions and decisions based on the *** a view to systematically examining this problem via survey of existing work,we have conducted a comprehensive literature review on the quality issues and related techniques of spreadsheets over a 35.5-year period(from January 1987 to June 2022)for target journals and a 10.5-year period(from January 2012 to June 2022)for target *** other findings,two major ones are:(a)Spreadsheet quality is best addressed throughout the whole spreadsheet life cycle,rather than just focusing on a few specific stages of the life cycle.(b)Relatively more studies focus on spreadsheet testing and debugging(related to fault detection and removal)when compared with spreadsheet specification,modeling,and design(related to development).As prevention is better than cure,more research should be performed on the early stages of the spreadsheet life *** by our comprehensive review,we have identified the major research gaps as well as highlighted key research directions for future work in the area.

Exploring one material for dual applications:A red-emitting Mg2GeO4:Eu3+ nanophosphor for future generation energy efficient WLEds and dosimetric applications

This paper theoretically studies the impurity states and the effects of impurity concentration and configuration on the optical,electrical,and statistical properties of cdSe nanoplatelets(NPLs).An image charge-based model of electron-impurity interaction is *** charge-carrier energy spectra and corresponding wave functions depending on the impurity number and configuration are *** electron binding energies are calculated for different NPL *** is shown that the image charge-based interaction potential that arises due to the dielectric constants mismatch is much stronger than the interaction potential that does not take such a mismatch into ***,it is demonstrated that the binding energies are increasing with the number of *** calculate the canonical partition function using the energy levels of the electron,which in turn is used to obtain the mean energy,heat capacity,and entropy of the non-interacting electron *** thermodynamic properties of the non-interacting electron gas that depend on the geometric parameters of the NPL,impurity number,configuration,and temperature are studied.

The levered-dual response(LEdAR)coulomb-damped system attains near resonant vibration isolation by differential preloads/offsets in linear *** takes the advantages of both the preloads/offsets in linear springs and the guiderail friction for realizing different levels of vibration *** isolation capacities are investigated on the strategies with both the horizontal and vertical guiderails,with the horizontal rail only,and without *** compressive preloads generally result in the consumption of most of the initial excitation energy so as to overcome the potential *** isolation onsets at the frequency ratio of 1∓0.095 on the left-hand side(LhS)and the right-hand side(RhS)of the lever are relative to the load plate *** observed near resonant isolation thus makes the LEdAR system a candidate for the isolation of the mechanical systems about resonance while opening a path for simultaneous harvesterisolation functions and passive functions at extreme frequencies.

Efficient guiding and focusing of intense laser pulse using periodic thin slits

Slits have been widely used in laser-plasma interactions as plasma optical components for generating high-harmonic light and controlling laser-driven particle ***,we propose and demonstrate that periodic thin slits can be regarded as a new breed of optical elements for efficient focusing and guiding of intense laser *** fundamental physics of intense laser interaction with thin slits is studied,and it is revealed that relativistic effects can lead to enhanced laser focusing far beyond the pure diffractive focusing *** addition,the interaction of an intense laser pulse with periodic thin slits makes it feasible to achieve multifold enhancement in both laser intensity and energy transfer efficiency compared with conventional *** results provide a novel method for manipulating ultra-intense laser pulses and should be of interest for many laser-based applications.

The prevalence of obesity has increased and is a health concern *** to the concerns regarding synthetic anti-obesity treatments,nowadays natural products become a *** studies proved that there is a potential to use marine algae as anti-obesity ***,in this study,the lipid inhibitory effect of crude polysaccharide of amyloglucosidase-assisted hydrolysate from Sargassum thunbergii(STAc)and its fucoidan fractions(STAFs)on 3T3-L1 cells and high-fat diet(hFd)-induced obese mice were *** to the results,the STAF3,showed the highest xylose content and exhibited significant inhibitory effects on lipid accumulation by downregulating adipogenic and lipogenic proteins in 3T3-L1 ***,oral supplementation with STAc significantly declined gain in body weight and fat weight,and serum lipid contents in an hFd-induced obesity mouse *** and chemical characterizations demonstrated that puritied STAF3 has consistent surface morphology and small particle size,with similar structural characteristics as commercial ***,these results indicate that STAc and purified STAF3 from Sargassum thunbergia is a potent source to develop as ananti-obesity agents or functional food products to counter obesity.
