Functional groups of Sahelian trees in a semiarid agroforestry system of Senegal

Aims Addressing plant responses to water stress is critical to understand the structure of plant communities in water-limited environments and to forecast their resilience to future changes in *** a semiarid agroforestry system in the Sahelian savannah of Leona(Senegal),we selected nine common tree species and explored their stress-resistance *** species represent a variety of life forms and are of high regional socio-economic *** hypothesized that different species would show different suites of traits to cope with water stress and expected to identify functional groups differing in strategies to withstand water *** Along a dry and a wet season,we monitored four traits reflecting above-and below-ground strategies of resource acquisition such as predawn leaf water potential(ψpd),specific leaf area(SLA),leaf thickness and leaf area index(LAI).We also measured two mor-phological traits:trunk diameter and tree *** andψpd were measured six times during the dry and rainy seasons,and the other traits were measured *** Findings We identified two functional classes subdivided into two func-tional groups of each *** first class included deciduous and semi-deciduous species that generally had large SLA,low leaf thickness and small-to-intermediate inter-seasonal varia-tions inψ*** second class included evergreen species of two functional groups that differ in SLA,leaf thickness and the mag-nitude of inter-seasonal variations ofψpd throughout the *** four functional groups identified in this study represent plant strategies differing in their response to changing environmental conditions.

methane oxidation and attenuation of sulphur compounds in landfill top cover systems: Lab-scale tests

In this study,a top cover system is investigated as a control for emissions during the aftercare of new landfills and for old landfills where biogas energy production might not be *** materials were studied as landfill cover system in lab-scale columns：mechanical–biological pretreated municipal solid waste（mBP）;mechanical–biological pretreated biowaste（PB）;fine（PBSf）and coarse（PBSc）mechanical–biological pretreated mixtures of biowaste and sewage sludge,and natural soil（NS）.The effectiveness of these materials in removing methane and sulphur compounds from a gas stream was tested,even coupled with activated carbon *** of CO2,CH4,O2,N2,H2S and mercaptans were analysed at different depths along the *** degradation was assessed using mass balance and the results were expressed in terms of methane oxidation rate（mOR）.The highest maximum and mean mOR were observed for mBP（17.2 g CH4/m^2/hr and 10.3 g CH4/m^2/hr,respectively）.Similar values were obtained with PB and *** lowest values of mOR were obtained for NS（6.7 g CH4/m^2/hr）and PBSf（3.6 g CH4/m^2/hr）,which may be due to their low organic content and void index,*** membranes with high load capacity did not seem to have an influence on the methane oxidation process：mBP coupled with 220 g/m^2and 360 g/m^2membranes gave maximum mOR of 16.5 g CH4/m^2/hr and 17.4 g CH4/m^2/hr,*** carbon membranes proved to be very effective on H2S ***,carbonyl sulphide,ethyl mercaptan and isopropyl mercaptan seemed to be easily absorbed by the filling materials.

Novel synthesis method combining a foaming agent with freeze-drying to obtain hybrid highly macroporous bone scaffolds

Three-dimensional macroporous scaffolds are commonly used in bone tissue engineering applications since they provide sufficient space for cell migration and proliferation, facilitating bone ingrowth and implant vascularisation. The aim of this work was to combine two simple methods, freeze-drying and gas-foaming, in order to fabricate highly macroporous bone scaffolds made of chitosan/agarose matrix reinforced with nanohydroxyapatite. The secondary goal of this research was to comprehensively assess biomedical potential of developed biomaterials. In this work, it was demonstrated that simultaneous application of freeze-drying and gas-foaming technique allows to obtain hybrid(as proven by ATR-FTIR)macroporous bone scaffolds(pore diameter > 50 um) characterized by high open(70%) and interconnected porosity. Novel scaffolds were non-toxic, favoured osteoblasts adhesion and growth and induced apatite formation on their surfaces, indicating their high bioactivity that is essential for good implant osseointegration. Biomaterials were also prone to enzymatic degradation, degradation in acidified microenvironment(e.g. osteoclast-mediated), and slow degradation under physiological p H of ***, the scaffolds revealed microstructure(70% open porosity, SSA approx. 30 m2/g, high share of macropores with diameter in the range 100-410 um) and compressive strength(1–1.4 mPa) comparable to cancellous bone, indicating that they are promising implants for cancellous bone regeneration.

In the present work we develop an electrochemical assisted method to form nanopores on the surface of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite(HOPG),which was accomplished by a simple electrochemical route and a scalable nanomaterial,carbon nanodots,without applying high voltages,high temperatures or toxic *** electrodes are in a solution of N-enrich carbon nanodots in acidic media and the potential scans applied on HOPG lead to the formation of a spatially inhomogeneous porous *** diameter of the resulting nanopores can be tuned by controlling the number of electrochemical reduction *** resulting nanoporous surfaces are characterized by atomic force microscopy,Raman spectroscopy,scanning electrochemical microscopy,electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and *** nanoporous HOPG showed high *** the potential of these surfaces to the development of energy storage devices is demonstrated.

Importance of overstorey attributes for understorey litter production and nutrient cycling in European forests

Background:In contrast with the negligible contribution of the forest understorey to the total aboveground phytobiomass of a forest,its share in annual litter production and nutrient cycling may be more *** and how this functional role of the understorey differs across forest types and depends upon overstorey characteristics remains to be ***:We sampled 209 plots of the FunDivEUROPE Exploratory Platform,a network of study plots covering local gradients of tree diversity spread over six contrasting forest types in *** estimate the relative contribution of the understorey to carbon and nutrient cycling,we sampled non-lignified aboveground understorey biomass and overstorey leaf litterfall in all *** samples were analysed for C,N and P concentrations,overstorey leaf litterfall for C and N *** additionally quantified a set of overstorey attributes,including species richness,proportion of evergreen species,light availability(representing crown density)and litter quality,and investigated whether they drive the understorey’s contribution to carbon and nutrient *** and conclusions:Overstorey litter production and nutrient stocks in litterfall clearly exceeded the contribution of the understorey for all forest types,and the share of the understorey was higher in forests at the extremes of the climatic *** most of the investigated forest types,it was mainly light availability that determined the contribution of the understorey to yearly carbon and nutrient *** species richness did not affect the contribution of the understorey to carbon and nutrient cycling in any of the investigated forest types.

Dual role of FGF in proliferation and endoreplication of Drosophila tracheal adult progenitor cells

Adult progenitor cells activation is a key event in the formation of adult *** Drosophilat formation of abdominal adult trachea depends on the specific activation of tracheal adult progenitors(tracheoblasts)at the Tr4 and Tr5 spiracular *** of these tracheoblasts generates a pool of tracheal cells that migrate toward the posterior part of the trachea by the activation of the branchless/fibroblast growth factor(Bnl/FGF)signaling to form the abdominal adult ***,we show that,in addition to migration,Bnl/FGF signaling,mediated by the transcription factor Pointed,is also required for tracheoblast *** tracheoblast activation relies on the expression of the FGF ligand bnl in their nearby ***,we show that,in the absence of the transcription factor Cut(Ct),Bnl/FGF signaling induces endoreplication of tracheoblasts partially by promoting fizzy-related ***,our results suggest a dual role of Bnl/FGF signaling in tracheoblasts,inducing both proliferation and endoreplication,depending on the presence or absence of the transcription factor Ct,respectively.

AIm： TO evaluate the association between poly- morphisms XRCC1 Arg194Trp and Arg399GIn and XRCC3 Thr241met and the risk for chronic gastritis and gastric cancer, in a Southeastern Brazilian population. mETHODS： Genotyping by PCR-RFLP was carried out on 202 patients with chronic gastritis （CG） and 160 patients with gastric cancer （GC）, matched to 202 （Cl） and 150 （C2） controls, respectively. RESULTS： No differences were observed among the studied groups with regard to the genotype distribution of XRCC1 codons 194 and 399 and of XRCC3 codon 241. However, the combined analyses of the three variant alleles （194Trp, 399Gin and 241met） showed an increased risk for chronic gastritis when compared to the GC group. moreover, an interaction between the polymorphic alleles and demographic and environmental factors was observed in the CG and GC groups. XRCC1 194Trp was associated with smoking in the CG group, while the variant alleles XRCC1 399Gin and XRCC3 241met were related with gender, smoking, drinking and Hpylori infection in the CG and GC groups. CONCLUSION： Our results showed no evidence of a rela-tionship between the polymorphisms XRCC1 Arg194Trp and Arg399Gln and XRCC3 Thr241met and the risk of chronic gastritis and gastric cancer in the Brazilianpopulation, but the combined effect of these variants may interact to increase the risk for chronic gastritis, considered a premalignant lesion. Our data also indicate a gene-environment interaction in the susceptibility to chronic gastritis and gastric cancer.

A Question of Identities： Jewish Italian Immigrants in New York During and After War World II

There are many studies on Italian and Jewish immigration in the United States, mainly based on socio-demographic statistics, the theme of exile, Fascist anti-Semitism or ethnic conflicts. many of these researches focus primarily on Jewish or Italians, but rarely address at Italian Jews as a whole, and, in their relation with Italian American and Jews. One of the reasons of this paucity of studies, might be the little number of Italian Jews who immigrated to the United States, especially in New York in the 1930s and 1940s, that drove several scholars not to pay really attention to this tiny group in ignoring their presence. Thus, this article aims to investigate through some memoirs, interviews and autobiographies the life of Italian Jews who were living in New York and the metropolitan area during and after War World II, with particular emphasis to those who were born there in these years and their formation of an American identity. This essay will also clarify an Italian Jewish identity--which made Italian the role of memory and ＂nostalgia＂ in an Italian identity--above all Jews a unique group and a minority within a minority.
